Excellent Resort, Top Notch Service

My wife and I celebrated seven days at Secrets Akumal for our honeymoon, and loved the experience. The beautiful landscaping, layout, and architecture influenced our choice in this resort. Even though we visited during sargassum season and it rained our first two days, the staff made our stay really nice and were so accommodating and fun. You must dine at Bordeaux and grab a well crafted cocktail at the lobby bar. We loved our time at Secrets Akumal.

This was our second trip to Secrets Akumal and we don’t normally vacation in the same place twice but we liked it that much. First I’ll go through some of the main positives: This staff is kind and patient. I can’t emphasize this enough. We love the pools and various foods (my favorite was the sushi at the tuna cutting demonstration) but the staff is what makes this place so great. My wife is the type to try strike up a conversation with anyone and they would always take time to listen. She even had a lot of questions for one of the groundskeepers and he seemed very happy to tell her about all the various trees. Max and Allen that ran the SUP tour were great and careful to watch out for everyone’s safety. Natalie and Michelle also did an excellent job with an our couples massage. Our concierge Karen was also major plus and super friendly. We love the landscaping and wildlife you can stumble across right on the campus. I saw a couple of mammals I have never seen before. The snorkeling right off the beach is really good in my opinion. Unfortunately the seaweed build up this time is apparently about the worst it’s ever been. Last time we visited there was hardly any at all. This made laying out right on the beach not much of an option. We did not see any turtles right off the hotel beach like we did the last time so we paid $35 each for one the guides to take is to the more protected area that’s right next to the hotel. We saw several turtles there. They were the Fernandez family and also very friendly. And here just a few minor areas where I think there could be some improvement: There’s an area sectioned off for hammocks, but they are terrible which is a disappointment when the rest of this place is so awesome. They are made of a rough material and tied where they nearly hit the ground. You really can’t swing in them and this is Mexico so a decent hammock should be pretty easy to come by. None of the eating area seem to have serrated knives. Flank steak or grilled octopus is hard to eat without a steak knife. At check in you are given book of coupons to use like cash but it’s very restricted to the point it’s mostly useless. I wish they would provide a lesser dollar amount maybe to use as tips for the staff-otherwise just leave this out. We did sit through the sales presentation on the Hyatt vacation club. I didn’t really know the details and was thinking this was something I might actually be interested in since we love this hotel so much. But in the end it wasn’t, and I probably should’ve left that part out of our trip. The gifts made up for it at least.
