Good Location to Cruise Port and Tight on Dining Area Space - 3.5 Out of 5.0 Stars

ripcordzz (Denver, Colorado) on Oct 26, 2025

This hotel is close enough to walk to the cruise port, the USS Midway, and even Seaport Village, so it’s in a great spot for those things. It’s also conveniently close to the airport and rental car facility. The hotel itself is a tad dated; it could use some updates in the bathrooms and other spots. The breakfast area is tiny. It just isn’t big enough for the number of people staying and eating there. Several people had to get breakfast and take it back to their rooms because there was nowhere to sit in the dining area. We just happened to walk up as someone was vacating a table. The staff were working hard to keep up with the demand for food. I think we counted four trips by the staff to fill up the biscuits in a span of 30 minutes. We also watch the staff change three trashcan bags that filled up while we were sitting there. All that to say, it’s a really busy hotel and there needs to be more seating for breakfast, but there’s no room. If you’re good taking your food back to your room, then it’s not a big deal (or sitting out by the pool, but it was chilly when we were there). The staff did a great job keeping up with the crowd. The pool was closed for refurbishment - bummer; our son would’ve enjoyed having some time in it. The fitness center wasn’t too bad. There were a couple benches, dumbbells, a few treadmills, elliptical trainers, a cable machine, a couple kettlebells, etc. All in all, not a bad hotel, but for the price I’d opt for a little closer to Seaport Village and the marina.

It was fine.

We stayed here from July 3–6 and found the location to be excellent—within walking distance of downtown and nearby neighborhoods like Little Italy. It’s also conveniently close to the San Diego Trolley transit system, which made getting around easy. Our room was on the 4th floor. The only potential downside is the noise, given the hotel’s proximity to the train tracks. We also noticed a strange, repetitive thudding noise in the evenings—we weren’t sure if it was coming from the building itself or something happening outside the hotel. On the plus side, the stay includes a complimentary breakfast, which was a nice touch. The room was clean. No complaints from us.

Disappointing Experience, Poor Service and No Accountability

Fabian C on Jun 10, 2025

We stayed at this Residence Inn in San Diego and had a really disappointing experience. My daughter’s pool toys, including her custom-fit goggle mask, were placed in a brown paper bag next to the door. Housekeeping came in and threw them out, even though it was clearly not trash. We noticed right away and alerted the front desk. The housekeeping manager denied taking anything but told us to speak with the front desk for compensation. There was no manager on-site that day (our checkout day), and we were told to call back. We did, multiple times over the next few weeks, and left messages. No one ever got back to us. No follow-up, no apology, and no accountability. On top of that, the bathtub drain was clogged and required maintenance during our stay. The whole experience was frustrating, and the idea of relaxing by the pool with our daughter was ruined by careless staff and poor customer service. Would not stay here again.

That's outrageous! Upon arrival at check-in, there was no help with luggage. Then, once my room was assigned, I entered to find a musty smell, along with suspicious urine stains on the bathroom door and a stale-smelling, unventilated refrigerator. In short, I went downstairs to explain my problems and requested a room change, which was granted. The new room was slightly cleaner but not spotless, the windows let in drafts due to gaps in the seals, and the rooms aren't soundproofed at all – you can hear everything, from the neighbor walking to doors opening; I can even participate in the conversation with my next-door neighbor. And for this second night, we had the pleasure of being woken up at 6 am by an alarm. I called reception, but no one answered. The alarm eventually stopped. It was impossible to fall back asleep due to the ambient noise. I paid a significant amount, and it wasn't to not even have the minimum requirements of a Marriott hotel. I only have one night left, and I'm already dreading it.

Nice, close to everything

Nice place very close to the water, Little Italy, and Gaslamp districts. Spacious rooms with kitchenette. It could use an update on the rooms but they were clean. The only downfall was the very thin walls. Also recommend top floor due to hearing people in rooms above.
