Excellent spot in Varadero

Wil_Mackie (Quebec City, Canada) on Dec 12, 2025

Great location, excellent service, small size resort with fantastic staff all around. Rooms are clean and in order, as are the common areas. Food offer was also very good, best I've seen in my 8-10 visits to Cuba in the past 3-4 years. The beach is great, way better aligned with the sun than most other Varadero resorts since it's located on the tip of the peninsula. This was my first time at Playa Alameda but certainly not the last. In fact, goin' right back on the 27th with the family !

Decent trip

MurphN_13 (London, Canada) on Nov 30, 2025

I had been to Cuba before, 12 years ago. I knew to expect a littler less than other destination spots. First off, staff were great, people outside the resort great. Beach was great. Service was great Checked in on Nov 15. Asked if we would like to upgrade to a more renovated room. It was a lot of money and closer to the beach, pool and snack bar so we did. They carried our bags to the room while giving a small tour along the way. We got to our room on the second floor and opened the door. Let me say this, the room was clean, everything worked including air conditioning but this wasn’t a newly renovated room. It was tired. The front of the resort looks decent but the further back you go the more tired it looks, probably due to being closer to the ocean weather. Food: snack bar seemed to be a favourite, chicken sandwich, ham and cheese and hamburgers. They were hit and pretty good. Breakfast at the buffet was decent, lunch was ok and dinner was meh. As the week went on it seemed to get worse. Very little meat (chicken, beef or fish) available. If it was it was at the stations and had to wait in line for it. Again, you wouldn’t starve but it wasn’t great either. People always say food in Cuba isn’t great and I will always disagree. We went out for dinner twice and lunch once on the strip and it was amazing. Salsa Suarez, la casa de All and some burger joint All great food. Also attended a Canadian party at another resort and the food there was good. I knew it’s off season but if I had to guess iberostar was trying to save money on the food. They ran out of cola mid week along with a few other items but again we were able to stock up on those items off resort. We didn’t expect a lot for a trip that cost $1700 tax in for 2 people. Pool and beach : pool was good and clean and the beach was great. It did look like the seaweed was coming in as you could swim out a few hundred yard and basically touch it. We had heard that another few weeks and it might be on the beach. Off resort: being off season a lot of business hours fluctuate so be aware of that if you are looking at hitting stores at the American plaza ect. There did not seem to be any shortage of supplies at any of the places we went to. The double decker bus is $5 usd to ride all day and both public and private taxis are fine. All business take cash, very few take credit cards. They do take Canadian money for tips and at restaurants and even give the conversion for can, USA, pounds and euros. Airport coming in and leaving was fine. Taxi to and from resort was about $40 USD each way. If your a smoker and are past security waiting for your plane, at the far end of the terminal there is a cleaning lady that will let you smoke in the maintenance room for a tip and will give you a lighter to use as you can’t bring them past security. Sounds wierd until you want a smoke. Lol All in all it was a good trip. We booked very last minutes for some burn out r&r. For what we paid it easily allowed us to go out for some dinners, explore around a bit. Not sure what else you could want for $850 per person. Just do your research, pack a bag of snacks and goodies and you’ll be fine.
