Ok, but disappointed

Karen D (Mount Uniacke, Canada) on Dec 10, 2025

We did a 9 day stay at the Melia International from Oct 30, 2025 to November 7, 2025. We haven't been to Cuba in 8 years, so thought we would give it another whirl. We haven't had any bad experiences in Cuba previously, but this one had quite a few issues. When we arrived at the Varadero Airport, we took one of the ladies up on the quick check-in service, which ended up being the best $15/person - highly recommend it to get through the lines so much faster. We did get a taxi to the resort, as we are not ones for getting on the milk run bus. Check-in at the resort was smooth, as no one was there. We did not do the Level service as others had mentioned in reviews it wasn't really worth the extra money, but now we wished we had. Everyone is given a ticket to join the wi-fi, but ask them right then and there how to actually get hooked up to it and not waste your time trying and having to go wait in the lobby for help. The one person who was always the MOST HELPFUL was Yaidelys (hopefully I spelt your name correctly). She is top notch and helped us with so many things, even if it wasn't her job, she did not question it. When we first checked in we asked for a king bed, and ended up in a room that overlooked a sewer system with an extremely loud humming sound. Not a relaxing scene or sound when sitting out on the balcony. We didn't unpack, as my husband went down to the lobby and asked for another room. He was given a new room card and told him we can check it out and decide if we wanted to change. We did change as the balcony overlooked the front of the building (room # 7054) which gave us a great view of all the old cars coming and going. Another couple was arriving days after us and were actually in the room directly below us which was great. We did notice that there were very tiny ants on the dresser, but I did bring a small container of ant bate that I put under the dresser, I will get back to the ants later. Rooms were clean or so we thought and the washrooms could use some attention and dressers should be fixed or replaced. Although robes are only offered to those who booked the Level service it should be offered to all adults, Level service or not. We knew the food could be an issue, but it really wasn't the best but we didn't starve. We did, although ended up with food poisoning the morning before we left for the airport and figured it was from the food at the little place by the pool. Should have known better as they put food out way too early and it is sitting in the heat, so note to self not to do that again. The grounds are nice and clean, lots of Anoles (small brown lizards) everywhere, which were so cute. We were told they have cats, but only saw one. I always pack a bag of cat treats, so this guy got lots! There are no words for the beach, but absolutely beautiful, which Cuba is well known for and did not disappoint. The pools are clean and plenty of lounge chairs that you didn't really have to claim early in the am to get a couple. So sleep in! We only did the Tex Mex al a carte, which was terrible. To book your al a carte restaurants is pretty old school and it's on the bottom floor and you get in line to book at a table, take your phone so you can take a picture of your reservation or they will write it on a piece of paper. In order to find out what daily activities are you have to go to the bottom floor and behind the stairs ... it is basically hidden and should be out by the pool area so people can actually find it. We were there for Halloween and left lots of treats for the cleaning service for our room. Also while walking around at night they had a few people dressed in costume and stood absolutely still and I almost didn't think they were real, but they were. They truly have a talent. We did notice there was no nightly entertainment at all. The pool service was awesome! Our hats off to Ebion who took very good care of us, as well as, the guys and gals at the pool bar. Beer was cold, service was excellent but a list of drinks that you serve would be a nice touch, just so you know what you can ask for. We woke up one morning to fumes in our room, which was coming from the AC (which actually worked great all week by the way), we could smell fumes even when we opened the patio door to the balcony and in the hallway, so not sure what that was about, but it was horrible. Our TV did not work half the time, but no big deal. Our toilet ran constantly, so had to figure out a way to stop the running water sound. We always had plenty of hot water and the mini fridge was super cold. The bed was comfortable, lots of pillows. Two days into our stay, my husband woke up with bites all over him. They were not from sand fleas or mosquito bites. Our third day there I woke up with bites all over me. We found dead ants in and on our bed. We complained to customer service, to which the fellow told us he would have the room thoroughly cleaned, as well as the bed sheets changed or we could move to another room. He told us that it is hotel policy to remove the mattress and throw it out if we decided to move to another room. We thought cleaning would be fine. We decided to mark the corner of the sheets and pillow cases with a pen under the hem so we could check if they were actually changed and when we checked, they were not new bedding. The same marks we put in pen were still right where we put them. We went back to customer service the next day and the guy we spoke with the day before wasn't working and we ended up with the most ignorant, rudest young girl, who clearly has no right being in customer service at all. We ended up asking Yaidelys for help again and that is when she gave us another room and told us we should not have been treated that way as we are guests. We packed and moved 2 floors down which was much better. For a resort as big as this, you would think they would have a coffee shop, but there is no such thing. We did notice that anyone trying to see how the other half lived in the Level section were sadly disappointed and were all turned away. This is the first resort that we have every stayed at that actually stopped people from entering a section they clearly didn't pay to belong. Good for you, as that is the way it should be. We did take the double decker bus tour, which is only $5 (US) that will pick you up at the front gate of the resort. You can get off and back on at anytime as the buses run every 20-30 minutes. Cuba is beautiful but we believe there are better resorts that will offer more of a 5 star feel than this one. Will we return to this resort, never. For us there were too many cons than pros. Others seem to love it, but it was just not for us.
