Reviews
Best hotel in Varadero, but the food let it down
sophiaw608 on Feb 02, 2023
Whilst the hotel was fantastic, the same cannot be said for the food. I cannot say I went hungry, but I did lose weight. The entertainment, especially BeBe and her team, were excellent, and I would go back just to see her. I know things are challenging, but running out of wine, and food for an all-inclusive hotel is unacceptable. Tui - Our rep Tatiana was great, very knowledgeable, and always willing to help sort out any queries we had. My only suggestion is that the initial welcome meeting that I'm used to was non-existent. Tui needed to be advertised (maybe on the TV) as we just stumbled on her when walking around the hotel. But my overall experience was fantastic, and it's probably one of the best in Varadero.
The good, the bad and the ugly

Let me first say that I aim to give an honest and fair review despite my less than thrilled view of this hotel. My friends and I specifically booked this resort based on the positive reviews and new and modern facility. It advertised a modern resort with premium amenities. Let me begin by stating that at first glance, this resort looks beautiful and very modern for Cuba. Rooms are a good size and offer a mini bar and kettle for coffee/tea. This leads me to my first complaint. The mini bar was empty and although there were two mugs with a kettle, there was no coffee or tea. I called down for someone to stock the mini bar and was told there was nothing available to stock it with. I later heard from people who booked the Level, that there's was stocked daily. The resort advertised that all rooms come with a stocked mini bar. There were ants on my bed and within the room. My toilet area flooded, my sink clogged regularly. I had a lovely maid that tried her best to help, but these issues were out of her control. The BEACH! ABSOLUTELY hands down the BEST beach I have ever been on. Clean and super clear. I'll give that a 5?. The pools were very nice and clean. I have no complaints here. This leads me to drinks ... although the resort advertised premium drinks, all I can say is NOT. One day you might get a half decent piña coloda and then they're out the next day. Once I got a decent sangria and then it wasn't available the next time I asked. My husband and our friends had whiskey and it was definitely watered down. Sprite was available 1 day and Fanta was non existent. If you want beer or bottled water, you're in luck. Even the coffee was awful, which I don't get because I've been to Cuba many times and coffee was always a favorite for me. This leads me to food. Let me start by saying that I have been to Cuba on previous occasions and knew to expect less in terms of food quality. HOWEVER, to have the SAME 5 ingredients day in and day out for lunch and dinner is unacceptable. If you like pork, pumpkin, rice with beans, turkey and occasionally chicken, it was abundant. My issue is that every day it was cooked the same way for breakfast, lunch and dinner. (With the exception of eggs for breakfast as well). There was no attempt to change up the menu or use the same ingredients differently. Why at a 4.5? resort is this not happening? And why when you have an abundance of pork is bacon not an option for breakfast? Very disappointing and I am not a picky eater. What infuriated me was that, upon speaking to there resort guests at the airport, I found out that they ate beef, shrimp and potatoes and grilled sandwiches, fries, hamburgers and hot dogs daily. One of the person's I spoke to was from a 3 star resort and the other from a sister Melia resort. We were never offered fries, hot dogs or mashed potatoes. Only once did the buffet have potatoes and they were boiled! Again, very disappointing, considering I have eaten at other cuban resorts and had much better food. Definitely should have been a little better given the money we spent. The a la cartes were basically buffet ingredients cooked differently. It seems the Level guest were reserved the better ingredients because we managed to get a spot in the Level a la carte, Sansom (gourmet dining) and it was the first decent meal we had all week. There was beef and potatoes available on the menu. We received lobster but had to pay 22 USD per person. The only seafood we received all week. Be aware that they charge everything in USD and don't even want cuban pesos or Canadian dollars. Especially, in Varadero. This confused me, given the broken relationship with the United States. Most of the cuban people were great and some not friendly. The people who book your a la cartes and some of the front desk employees. Our flight was delayed on our last day so I booked late check out (paid for). After 4 hours, they sent someone to our rooms, rushing us to get out. Even though we told them we want to pay for a 6pm late check out. After 20 minutes, they called and rushed us out again. Honestly, in short this resort us not worth the money and you can get a better experience paying less at another resort. In my opinion, this resort is over rated and falsely advertised. I'm not sure where all the great reviews are coming from because it wasn't even close to acceptable.
