Mislead by "The Level"

Melia_Tripper on Apr 20, 2024

We were so looking forward to this trip because we had seen the Level on our last trip and we were super excited to experience it on our anniversary trip. We had an evening check-in and we were told to go over to the Level Reception in the morning to find out what is included with the Level service. Our room was OK, but it was not in the Level section so we waited until morning and went to the reception at the Level building figuring they would sort it all out. The person guarding the door was hesitant to let us in, actually seemed a bit rude and the man who was in the Reception was extremely rude. The guy looked angry before we even spoke. We told him we booked the Level, we don't believe we were actually put into to a Level room, and that we were also told to come see you in the morning to find out all that is included. The reception dude then slammed his hand on the table and yelled, "Lets start from the beginning" .. like we had some kind of complicated story or something. So I pointed at my wrist-band and told him that the person in the room beside us has an orange bracelet and we were given the silver ones, so what exactly is the difference besides paying an extra $550. He eventually looked it up on the computer and told us we were signed up for "Family Level" and that his building is specifically "Adult Level". He said he could not help us and told us to go back to the main reception. At this point my wife and I were ready to leave the resort altogether. Long story shorter, apparently there is an "Adult" and a "Family" Level. I guess this justifies being treated like a child when you step into the "adult" section no matter what age you are. Apparently, there was no way to book the Level Adult and we were not particularly anxious to be treated poorly again in the "Adult Level". We were just unfortunate with our experience this time and we did find that several other guests had similar stories about feeling they were misinformed about "The Level". The "Family Reception" choose to blame Transat for the mis-information and offered no apologies whatsoever. It kind of made us suspect that the Family reception is behind closed doors for that very reason. The Rest of our stay... For 2 days they were painting outside of our room which was a bit of a nuisance to wake up to each day. After the first day, there was a very heavy gasoline or varsol smell in our room which we assumed was from the painters. We called the 7000 and they came up with the Cuban version of Febreze. We were nervous about going to sleep with the very heavy smell because we knew it was toxic, masking the smell was not exactly the best solution for a good night's sleep. We did not get water or drinks on one of the days. Each evening, there was entertainment at the pool, blue bar, and red bar.. which is awesome, but it was all at the same time, which actually made sitting on the balcony in the early evening pretty much intolerable with music being played in every direction. If the performance times were staggered, we would be able to really enjoy them from our beautiful balcony seats. The restaurant Como En Casa was not a good environment at all. We suspect there were staffing issues or something going on. The food was actually terrible at that restaurant and the staff were watching our every move under the bright lights of the room. The ambiance was unlike anything we have ever experienced. We really enjoyed the other restaurants we went to. The room and the view that we did have was very nice, but again, it really wasn't the Level experience we were sold on from our first trip. The morning coffees were amazing, the barbeque was amazing, and the wait-staff were absolutely delightful. The staff at the buffet were absolutely amazing, and the food was better than most Cuban buffets. Both the beach and pool are amazing. There was no shortage of food, drinks, or amazing staff trying to make this a very special place. Our experience wasn't quite as good as we hoped. I guess sometimes that happens. It's still paradise.
