Without exaggeration: Once in a lifetime experience

Peter O on Jun 08, 2024

I have to reveal some of my personal life details to explain why this place is unique. My girlfriend and I broke up after 3 days together at this resort and she left me. I was left alone, down and depressed. What happened next amazed and impressed me. The support that I received from the resort personnel (many of whom witnessed the breakup story) was genuine and unobtrusive. Everyone from the resort staff gave me emotional support. I do mean: "every person", all: management and reception employees, entertainment and bar staff, cleaning security and even maintenance people were accommodative, helpful, understanding and moreover cordial. I guess it is due to the kind nature of Dominican people. If I write all the names of everyone to thank personally, I will run out of the review characters limit. I thank all of the personnel

Not the greatest vacation.

Ron V on Jun 04, 2024

Broke my right foot after falling off a poorly marked curb right in front of the resort as we were being dropped off from the Airport, had not even checked in yet! It was late and it was dark, driver neglected to assist his passengers disembark the vehicle. The onsite Doctor did not think it was fractured and on that advice I walked on the injured foot all week long. I am still dealing with the effects of a delayed union because I walked on the injured foot all week long. My wife purchased crutches for me to walk on and has repeatedly requested a receipt so we could claim it through insurance she even called at one point and to date no response from this resort. My letter to Bahia Principe outlining the events was only just recently responded to and basically said sorry you hurt yourself, have a nice day! I am not expecting or asking for a free trip, however some compensation would at least show good faith on the part of the resort. I will not be returning to this resort.

WOW!! Amazing Anniversary holiday

philpnd (Verwood, United Kingdom) on Jun 03, 2024

We went here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. Yes the water on the beach is not crystal clear and yes it is a long transfer time but you know that before you go, people who complain about it on here obviously didn't do their home work before booking! The hotel is excellent and in gorgeous very well kept grounds. You want for nothing! All the staff work amazingly hard, including the grounds maintenance team that are constantly tending to the gardens, etc. A massive thankyou to the quiet pool bar staff. Leydy and her companion are amazing they keep our drinks topped up constantly and always with a smile and a laugh. There are five additional restaurants on site as well as the main hotel restaurant, we went to 4 of them over the 11 nights we were there, and the Japanese style one was our favourite. (Tip book these early as they get booked up) There are no additional charges for the restaurants only if you want to buy a more expensive wine, but all other drinks are included. Your mini bar in the room is free and topped up daily. People have said on here that the air conditioning is not good. Ours was amazing, and kept the room really cold, so dont understand what other people are talking about. We took a day trip to Catalina island, which you can book with a guy who comes around the pool everyday, you catch the boat from the beach around 100yrds from the hotel. The snorkling on the trip was truly amazing and took out breath away! The beach that you are taken to is crystal clear water but is quite rocky, so bear that in mind. There is another trip to a different island that was said to be the perfect carribean beach and waters but it is about two hour coach trip to get to the boat so depends if your happy sitting on a coach for 4hrs? So overall we found this hotel amazing, the food and drinks were great, the room service was amazing again no additonal charge and the quiet poll was pure bliss. The negative comments on here seem to be from uneducated people who haven't done their homework! Couple of extra tips, take US dollars dont bother with the Dominican Peso as everything is marked up in US dollars and they have to convert it which i dont think you get the best exchange rate. And take a large cooler mug/flask to get your drink atbthe pool bar put in as the beer glasses are the small plastic types. We had a fantastic time and im sure you will to.

You can make whatever type of holiday you’d like from this place!

dirtyhumans (England) on Jun 03, 2024

I travelled with my 18 year old daughter - booking and travelling with TUI. My daughter did all of the research so she knew everything about the resort before we had even left the UK! Reading the other most recent reviews I agree with them all including the negative points but my advice is take it all with a pinch of salt, we’re all different! I went out with no expectations and had a fabulously relaxed, quiet and sunny holiday. This is not a 5 star UK hotel that the celebs go to stay at, so do not expect perfection but do expect a clean resort, good choice of food and attentive staff. In short, I’d have no issues visiting again. You can make whatever holiday you’d like from this place, we went for peace and quiet but if you want lively and active there are activities all day, pool parties, entertainment in the evening and then a club until 3am each night, not to mention the various excursions you can book on too. People were there to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and also some honeymooners there. The resort is about 1 1/4 hours from the airport by coach. When we arrived at the main hotel lobby, the Bouganville residents are transferred to the adults only lobby via golf buggy. The family resort is much larger than the adults only and we only ventured over to the family side for dinner at the Italian restaurant. The Village is opposite the main hotel lobby and unfortunately the burger shack was not in use as it had sadly been a victim of a fire and was cordoned off. There were several people using wheelchairs and mobility scooters - everything is one level with the exception of reception which has accessibility ramps and there are steps with grab rails into all of the pools so I would consider this to be a fairly accessible hotel. I know they had ground floor accessible rooms and toilet facilities around the resort but cannot comment on how well equipped they were. The lobby is open and spacious and very well kept, two bars, two shops and access to the lunch and dinner buffet, the entertainment is also here each evening. We had already checked in online although our key cards were unavailable but we were still shown to our room and just collected them later on. The Adults only resort is big but nowhere is too far! Our room sat exactly half way between the pools and the lobby was just across the path. We had a garden view room with two double beds as per our request, whirlpool bath and walk in shower. It was clean, towels were great, minibar with beer, Fanta, Pepsi, rum and vodka which was replenished daily and plenty of bottles water. The only thing that it was missing was a washing line on the balcony. The family side had retractable lines but the adults didn’t?! The tiled floors were gorgeous, lots of space, sofa, dressing table, TV, wardrobe, safe, coffee machine and pump bottles of toiletries that get refilled. The furniture was a bit tired but it all worked and was clean so no complaints from me. DO NOT PUT TISSUE DOWN THE TOILET!!!! There are bag lined bins in the loos and you must put your used tissue and sanitary items in there OTHERWISE YOU WILL BLOCK THE TOILET! There is a picture on the toilet lid but foolishly we did not realise it meant no tissue….some poor chap had to come and unblock our loo after day 3 :0/ It didn’t happen again once we realised! The girls cleaning the rooms are lovely, sometimes you can hear them singing :0) I saw that someone had written about the corridors in the accommodation blocks, the carpets are tired and stained, however, after a few days you appreciate the carpet as it stops a lot of the noise from shoes and the echoes off of what would normally be a tiled floor. They’re constantly being cleaned though so despite the look of them being a bit ropey, they’re clean! The corridors are cool and airy and they run parallel to the garden path so you can walk through them the length of the garden to avoid the sun. The gardens are immaculate and early one morning we saw a humming bird. The hotel keeps cats for pest control, we didn’t see lots and they didn’t bother us at all. I didn’t get bitten by mosquitoes at all, my daughter a couple of times and she usually gets eaten alive! She was equipped with all of the repellant and only used it twice. The flies are a bit of a nuisance but I’ve never been to a warm country that doesn’t have pesky flies or mosquitoes; the wetter days did allow for a few less flies hanging around though! Don't expect white sands and turquoise seas at this resort; the beach area is weirdly hard and looks just like Bournemouth - sea included! However, it is clean, warm and private with plenty of sun-beds available. The pools are well kept, large and again with plenty of sun-beds for everyone. There are three pools - the quiet pool one end of the resort, the activity pool is beach side and just across the patio area opposite is the ‘jacuzzi’ pool. Two pools have swim up bars and the jacuzzi pool has a regular bar. People do get up annoyingly early to reserve their favourite sun-beds or ones that offer ‘shade' but there will always be others available. We largely spent the morning in the sunshine and moved elsewhere to find shade in the afternoon - the earth turns so the umbrellas don’t offer shade all day! The staff are incredible; they will remember your favourite drink, they will make you smile and look after you, even teach you a bit of Spanish. The entertainment team were constantly at work and never seemed to run out of energy, we chose to spend our time at the quiet pool but you could certainly hear the fun and laughter coming from the activity pool, particularly in the afternoons! We did have one male member of staff that seemed to catch us and want to talk, it was a bit awkward and so we simply avoided him but in the grand scheme of things it wasn’t a bother. There are a lot of Americans and Canadians here that tip constantly, as in every drink that is made! Maybe it’s just being British that I just didn’t get it, the staff certainly don’t expect tips but we felt silly at times because of the other guests (not British!) blatantly doing it, we did not understand the etiquette! Do remember that hurricane season sets in June to October! We arrived on 15th May, had 6 days of wall to wall sunshine and the following Wednesday it poured all day. After that it was a bit hit and miss, nice and warm still though. The rain comes down hard, apparently there are umbrellas in the wardrobes but I never looked for ours! We had a storm 3am one night and the electric kept dipping in and out which only disturbed me as we were leaving our toilet light on and so the flicking woke me up! As one reviewer said the electric kept going off but this only seemed to happen when the rain arrived. The water does also go off as I presume an electric pump serves the resort but it’s only for a moment and perhaps a generator kicks in as the restaurants can’t afford to be without electric. The water was warm at peak times so you can shower but if you want a hot shower or bath, have one when there is less demand for the hot water! My daughter and I feasted three times a day and our tummies were perfectly fine. Ice comes from bags and I assume the salad washed in bottled water. The restaurant buffets are not massive but they offer enough choice for meals to be varied and hopefully that meant less food waste! Breakfast has everything you could want - fruit, yoghurts, cereal, pastries, toast, cooked, omelettes to order, cold meat, cheese, waffles and pancakes. Tea and coffee is served to you at the table and the only drinks you can self serve around the resort is tea and coffee from the machines in the lobby - the station also offers pastries mid morning and sandwiches at lunch into the afternoon. Drinks are all made to order and if you want premium spirits in your drinks you must ask for them otherwise they use local spirits, which are perfectly fine. Themed dinners in the buffet each night and I recommend trying the a la carte restaurants as it offers variety into your holiday. You’re shown to your table which I know some people found frustrating but believe me it helps in reducing the number of people wandering around willy nilly! And it helps balance the number of people each waiter is serving, as well as allowing the staff to turnover fresh tables. Thank you to all at the Bahia Principe Luxury Bouganville, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

An amazing way to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversay

Stephanie N (Verwood, United Kingdom) on May 31, 2024

Wow, this was such an amazing holiday. We were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversay and we weren't disappointed. Also our first Adult only hotel. Everything was perfect, we joked with fellow travellers that it was annoying that we couldn't fault anything, so resorted to saying the knives in the dining rooms were odd ?? We spent the whole holiday by the quiet pool, which we loved. And I especially want to mention Leydy and Nayeli, who run the pool bar daily at the quiet pool. I was so sad to say goodbye to them. They were both amazing. As everyone else had said, the water at the beach isn't crystal clear but not being beach people, this didn't bother us at all and there is nothing that the resort can do, so seems pointless moaning anout it. We got our Caribbean clear water fix when we had a boat day to Catalina Island. (We wouldn't do this again as Catalina island beach is very rocky, The other island that begins with an S is supposedly much more idyllic) I've seen other people say that the beds were too hard, well all I can say is, I slept better here than I do at home. Just one comment about the rooms. Don't bother taking your Shark Flexi as the vaultage is different and they don't work. I had an old pair of straightners which did work. We tried 4 of the 5 alternative restaurants and the Asian was the best in our opinion. If you go to the Italian one at the other hotel, don't pig out on the bread basket, the portions for mains are huge. What else can I say,Give the Escape Room a go, that was fun and I had a treatment at the spa, which was lovely (extra costs for both of these) and finally, we had room service for dinner about 5 times. There is no extra cost for this and it was so good. If you run out of stuff in your mini bar (they do refill daily) just call reception and they'll run up with stuff or find a maid in the hall, they're usually still cleaning til about 8pm and they'll load you up. Thank you for an amazing anniversay.
