Valentin El Patriarca Veradero Cuba Disappointing Recent Visit

LovestheBeach21 (Ottawa) on Jan 11, 2026

We recently visited Valentin El Patriarca Veradero as a last minute deal to get away after Christmas and paid for the Alegance upgrade with a suite as we had visited this hotel several times over the last decade and enjoyed it. We soon found out how much this great hotel had changed since our last visit in 2020. Right from the start, check-in took one hour and forty five minutes with some very young un-trained staff member at the check-in counter. Could not even get a drink as the hotel lobby bar had shut down minutes before we arrived just after 10PM. The attendant kept saying there were no rooms available. Just before midnight we were escorted to possibly the worst room we have ever seen even though it was in the Alegance buildings, the room was dirty, no hot water, no towels, toilet running and the AC unit absolutely screeched all night. Thankfully the snack bar down by the beach remains open all night and were able to get some food and drink there. Always good friendly staff at the snack bar and good service even when really busy after the show is over and the lobby bar closes. We found our concierge in the Alegance lounge near the main pool as the original Privilege/Alegance lounge was torn apart for renovations and unusable--many good memories there! The concierge was unhelpful getting us into an Alegance SUITE which we had paid for up front. We decided to visit the main desk every hour on the hour until they finally caved and gave us the SUITE. Staff played the shell game with us re-directing us each hour trying to give us hope that we may soon have the expected room until we refused to leave the counter around 4PM and started stirring the pot--it finally boiled and we got our room with almost a day of our vacation gone. We met several couples during our stay that were also denied their paid for room and had go through the same shenanigans we did. The suite room they gave us was very nice and clean small deficiencies of the second toilet running all the time, no hand towels and the 110 volt plug on the hair dryer did not work though the dryer did. During our walk abouts we noticed that there were very few patrons at the main pool or the beach considering staff were saying they were fully booked. And then Ground Hog Day hit...we were offered meals at the Alegance lounge three times daily with pasta, chicken or fish as the only things on the menu most days. Twice we were offered beef which actually turned out be prepared very well and was quite tasty. Breakfast was eggs and toast with very salty bacon but edible. Lunch and supper were the same meal each and every day, over and over again. We did not go hungry but dining became boring, nothing special. We met three staff who we recognized from the past and they remembered us also, was nice to see them. We soon found out that the hotel en large was sold with the change over occurring on January 1st, New Years Day, to the Gaviota group. I witnessed the outright firing of the chamber maid who took care of our room--drop everything, get out. She left her tools where they lay, left a suite door open, left her key in the maid closet door and ran. I was a bit embarrassed for her, she seemed friendly. The concierge was a rotating staff each day of two people, every day I requested the running toilet be fixed and could I please have a few Cristal beer in our room for the evenings--never once in our seven nights there did someone come to fix the toilet or were there even one Cristal beer in fridge. Other patrons mentioned they were getting Cristal--somehow our room was being missed. On the first few days we had tepid warm water, this became cold water for four days of our visit, many other patrons mentioning the same thing. We did not get much help from either concierge as I believe their hands were tied, they had nothing to offer. From more walking around we noted many, many rooms shuttered, not being used. We strongly think the Valentin group was giving up on the hotel, raiding rooms for parts to keep other rooms up and running at the cost of occupancy and availability. There was entertainment each evening with a nice celebration on New Years Eve that I think everybody at the hotel attended--maybe 250-300 hundred patrons. Keep in mind this property has 46 buildings with 12 units each for occupancy, do the math--the hotel may have been at 1/4 capacity. We did not see or participate in any Entertainment activities as it did not appear to be running. There was a very good aqua show one evening with water dancers that put on a great show even though the air temperature was around 14'C and the pool water was cold also. Speaking of pools, none of them are heated. During our stay there was quite a cold spell 3 days long and only the very brave were enjoying a swim. The pools were kept immaculately clean during our stay and there were no rude chemical smells. El Patriarca being an adults only, 16+, property, there was no disturbance from young children and it was actually quite peaceful due to the low occupancy. Veradero IS Veradero and the beach is long and beautiful. Unfortunately during our stay due to the weather system there was quite a surf and the RED flag flew every day. Along with the chill there was a surge of blue bottle jellyfish in the water and washed onto the shoreline--we didn't see anyone swim all week! Due to the wind we did not frequent the beach much and therefore did not use the beach snack bar though others said they were enjoying the service. We did not participate in any off property outings, kind of been there done that at this point. Just wanted to come, rest and be treated well. We were unable to use the SPA as we were constantly told there was no availability, a nice massage would have been good. The grounds crew did excellent work, every where was beautiful and well taken care of. Not many flowers this time of year especially with the cool weather. We have to take this vacation with a large grain of salt as it is well known that Cuba is struggling a bit economy wise but we had no idea this once great hotel we have visited when owned by Oceans then Valentin would be in such poor condition physically and including the reduced morale of the service staff which can definitely be felt. Our hope for the future is that Gaviota can bring the hotel back to life with happy staff and functioning accommodations. I am forced to give Valentin El Patriarca Veradero a very low 2* rating. We came for sun and warmer temperatures--we got that. We gave the familiar staff a big hug before we left as we may never visit again. Now where is that transfer bus??

First trip together with my beautiful sweet angel!!

Ray C (Burlington, Canada) on Jan 07, 2026

The location of the hotel was in a good spot! Near the end..but still close! Really scrappy place.. but we had a BLAST!! The pool was nice and big, good show put on one night with synchronized swimmers, beach is AMAZING!! The staff were great(the ones we met), dont leave anything out unless you want to lose it. We had a bottle of sunscreen stolen the 2nd day there!! We did have e only 3 out of 7nice days to pool, beach, tan and snorkel!! Just dont let your fiancee touch the instructor, he'll think it's "go time"!! The snack bar is HORRIBLE.. lack of choices for food, let alone what they feed you with the substandard quality and portions. The bars outside of the lobby and snack bar had very limited hours and WAAAAY too heavy with the liquor! Let's talk about the substandard rooms they house you in! The closets had broken shelves, faucet dripped constantly (costs alot), they give you only 2 bath towels and 2 bea h towels for the week, the rooms were super cold, then too warm to sleep, tv had 42 channels last 2 were not together with only 3 english channels and 1 was CNN - made NYE fun!!, no batteries for the remote so that meant you spent 5 minutes just to get to an english channel because the button to go up was not fully working (had to get it just right to go anywhere), the volume button was slow to work as well and the rest did nothing. The TV also had an hour and a half timer before it threatened to turn off on you and the 1 movie channel also liked to replay the movies it played earlier (5 hours)! Above all, we had a great time mostly because we were together!!! Im happy I asked her to Marry me...she's amazing!!! We're done Cuba, thanks for all the Memories we've shared...
