Difficulties at Canto Del Sol for 1 week family holiday

Lorraine W (Regina, Canada) on Jan 16, 2026

Dear Guest Relations Team, I am writing to formally share feedback regarding our recent stay at the Canto del Sol and Villa Vallarta from December 30, 2025 to January 6, 2026. This trip was a special family vacation for us. There were 20 members in our group, and my spouse and I covered the full cost of the flights and accommodations for the entire group as an all-inclusive Christmas holiday. We have personally stayed at your property approximately 25 times over the years and have consistently had positive experiences, which is why we confidently chose your resort again for such an important family gathering, Unfortunately, this visit fell significantly below the standard and value which we have come to expect, particularly given the cost of the stay. Travel issues-(NOT hotel related but contributed to our trip frustrations.) When our trip left Regina, the plane was an hour late leaving! We all got on the plane, and they pulled it over and said, “they had to refuel or do something with the fuel”. That took an hour. Our daughter and family and our two grandchildren were supposed to leave Calgary at approximately the same time, but their plane was also pulled over. They had to get their plane fixed also and left late. They should have got to Puerto Vallarta an hour and a half before us but ended up getting there 15 to 20 minutes before us. We got there an hour late, of course! After seven days of living through all our hotel issues, we went to the airport three hours ahead of our flight (as is the rule by the airport). We got in line at the WestJet area and waited for two hours before we even got close to the front of the line. We got registered to come home on the plane. Since there were six groups it took ½ an hour. Next, we had to go upstairs and line up at the country registration to get our baggage checked to go home. There was a very long walk to the Baggage Area #13 and no time to rest or shop. When we all got to #13, it was time to Board our Flight home to Regina. Also, when we got to #13, we found out that our other six passengers going to Calgary didn’t have a plane home that night because their assigned plane had no oxygen. It was cancelled until the next day at 6:00 p.m. These six people were taken to another all-inclusive hotel for the night. This meant that the four adults on the delayed plane had to miss another day of work for our trip. My two young grandsons that were also delayed thought it was great because they had the all-inclusive food and drinks and a waterslide at this hotel! Staffing and Check-In Experience Upon arrival, the lobby was extremely busy, with only two staff members managing the ten metre long check-in desk. Our group was checking into multiple rooms, and several rooms initially had issues that required reassignment. For example, 2 families were not given a standard two queen room, instead they were given a king bed and a couch. They both had small children and required the two queen beds to spend the week there. While staff were courteous and did their best, the process was slow and clearly understaffed. This lack of staffing was evident throughout the week and negatively affected many aspects of our stay. Food & Dining Experience The buffet offerings were noticeably limited compared to previous visits. At several meals, protein options were minimal or absent, and the variety of fruits and vegetables was significantly reduced from what we have experienced in the past. While the omelet station staff were excellent and worked very hard, there were only two cooks serving extremely long lines, resulting in extended wait times. There was no one to guide patrons through the buffet line and there were times we waited 10-15 minutes to reach the food area, on top of food constantly running out which again limited options. We were able to book our entire group at the Surf and Turf à la carte restaurant one evening, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, the quality of the steaks was disappointing, with excessive fat throughout many cuts. As well, one of our guests was given a severely undercooked chicken breast which resulted in a delay of her eating with everyone else and no longer wanting to eat the meal which was disappointing. While the multi-course meal ensured no one went hungry, the quality did not meet expectations for a specialty dining experience included at this price point. Access to specialty restaurants was also very limited. Due to the timing of our trip, we were unable to book our à la carte experiences due to the New Year’s Eve celebrations. This meant that the first 3 days of our trip we were unable to redeem our vouchers. Despite repeated attempts, several members of our group were unable to redeem their dining coupons during the week and ultimately returned home with unused vouchers, which was frustrating given that these experiences were part of what we paid for. Water, Power, and Room Issues During our stay, there were multiple water outages, including evenings with no water for flushing toilets or showering. On other occasions, water was available but only cold. There were also power outages on more than one night, leaving rooms without lights or electricity. My husband was very sick for a while at the hotel and spent a lot of time in his room, using the bathroom and trying to get feeling better. I thought I might have to take him to the hospital one night, because he was so sick. He tried to flush the toilet that night and there was no water! I had to take the plastic bags out of the garbage cans and go to try to get water. I went to the pool to fill them with water. When I got to the pool, I met two staff workers from the hotel doing the same to clean the pool washroom. They did not offer to help me. Again, not enough staff at the hotel! Towel availability was a persistent issue. Housekeeping removed used towels daily but frequently did not replace them, often stating that, “none were available”. This required repeated calls to the front desk, and in some cases towels were never delivered, making it impossible to shower after pool use. During these times, we were forced to use the beach towels provided once daily that were quite damp and sometimes dirty, which is not an appropriate substitute to dry our bodies and hair. While our room’s air conditioning functioned well and was appreciated, the ongoing water, power, and towel issues significantly impacted comfort, hygiene, and overall enjoyment of our stay. New Year’s Eve Event The New Year’s Eve celebration was also disappointing. Our group was not informed that advance registration was required for seating, which was a departure from previous years. We were fortunate to learn this from another guest and were able to secure tables on the beach; however, this required last-minute changes to plans and attire. Due to seating arrangements that put us on the beach, there was no lighting, and we were required to use the flashlights on our cell phones to see what it was that was being served. Overall, the event did not reflect the level of organization or quality we have previously experienced at your resort. Beach Bar, Overcrowding & Lack of room service There were no ”on deck waiters or waitresses for drinks”. We had to always line up at the bar to get a drink. Always before, at that hotel, the waiters came around and took your drink order and brought your drinks. It was awesome and I gave them a tip every time they brought me a drink. This year we had to line up at the bar to get a drink if you wanted one. When you went to that lineup, there was usually 40 to 60 people ahead of you. There wasn’t much hope of getting your drink quickly because there was only one, sometimes two gentlemen making the drinks! We don’t usually order room service, but because my husband was sick, we thought we might. They said, “no orders of room service after 6:00 p.m. and none before 8:00a.m. In the past, you could get room service anytime! What’s with that? Not enough staff?? There were two different days when we left the hotel and almost had to push our way out! People were lined up in the lobby to check in or out. They seemed to fill the entire lobby waiting for a staff member to help them. I talked to a few of the people and it sounded like they were in that line for two or three hours! Again, lack of staff. The hotel put on a karaoke night and my kids went. I stayed with my sick husband. Apparently, my kids all did very well. My boys said, “Michelle (their sister)” stole the show!” with her singing. So that was good. Overall Impression & Request for Review We understand that staffing and operational challenges can arise; however, the frequency and consistency of issues throughout our stay point to a broader operational problem. Given our long history with your resort, this was particularly disappointing, especially for us (knowing the amount of money that was spent to make this trip happen). This vacation was meant to be a meaningful family Christmas trip. While we made the best of the situation, the experience did not align with the standard of service promised, nor with the cost we paid for an all-inclusive holiday at your property. Given the circumstances, we respectfully request that our stay be reviewed in full, including consideration of appropriate compensation or goodwill acknowledgment reflective of the issues experienced by our group. Given the significant and ongoing service failures experienced during this stay, we have made the difficult decision that we will NOT return to Canto del Sol or Villa Vallarta in the future. I am sorry to say that,“ that is your LOSS”! We appreciate your time and would welcome your response outlining how the Hotel concerns will be addressed. Solid 3* - Good for budget travellers

gateway889 (Toronto, Canada) on Jan 06, 2026

Travelled wth family on WestJet Vacations package for one week over New Years. We occupied 2 partial Oceanview rooms and one 2-bedroom suite. When we arrived, there was no pillow or soap in one room and only 1 hand towel and bath towel for a double room in a second. Housekeeping did respond quickly to fix that. PROS: 3 well maintained pools: 1 large main pool, 1 kids's pool and 1 pool across a bridge to an adjoining section. Lots of loungers. Wrist bands required to get pool towels (suite guests excluded). Truly beachfront with long stretch of clean sand. Vendors, massage and horseback riding available on beach. Property is kept clean by attentive staff but the property shows its age almost everywhere. Main restaurant is large with sufficient seating, has efficient, hard-working staff and a variety of dishes on the buffet. The majority of food choices on the buffet cater to local tastes There are several "specialty" restaurants, but they are small and cannot accommodate very many people. You must sign up in the lobby at 9am to secure a spot for the next day. If you miss the sign-up, your only choice is the buffet or off-site. We ate in the steak & seafood, the Italian and the Asian restaurants. We found the Italian suited us best. CONS: The front desk check-in and check-out needs revamping. It is painfully slow and inefficient. We had a late check-in with one on-duty person and it took over 30 minutes. There was no assistance to carry bags upstairs to the suite as the elevator was out of service. The taxi situation is also hit and miss - better to use Uber. Daytime check-ins and check-outs had lines snaking through the lobby and taking up to 2 hours to complete. There was no main elevator for 2.5 days. We lost power around 5am on New Year's Eve and it did not come back until around 10:30am. there was no water in the rooms for several hours. Apparently this was a "city" problem which was fixed fairly quickly but reoccured over the next 2 days. Staff did their best but with no hydro or water, breakfast was delayed and there were several very unhappy people! Finally, visitors would have benefitted from information at the beginning of their stay. No internet codes, restaurant sign-up info, 3rd pool info, etc was provided and there was none in the room. FINAL THOUGHTS: This property offers good value for budget travellers, but will leave others somewhat disappointed. It is a solid 3*, It is a popular choice for young families and local Mexican visitors. It may not be the best choice for anyone with mobility issues as there are many stairs - some ramps are available and there is an elevator when it is working.
