Beautiful hotel, amazing staff, average food

pintsizedblondie (Sheffield, United Kingdom) on Jun 15, 2024

Royalton Review We have just returned from a 14 night stay at the Hideaway RRC. Upon arrival, we were directed to the Hideaway check in office. I had pre booked and paid $60 to reserve room 1327 in the Hideaway section. They tried to put us in another room facing the mangroves until I informed them I had pre booked that particular room and showed them my confirmation email from the previous September. About ten minutes later, they informed us that this room wasn’t available due to renovation works and we could either have a Hideaway room facing the mangroves or they would upgrade us free of charge to a Diamond Club family room, which although it wasn’t in the child free Hideaway section, we were assured it was a big upgrade. We reluctantly decided to take this despite being unhappy it wasn’t in the child free section but we were so glad we did as it had a private roof top jacuzzi terrace and was loads bigger than a standard room. Good start after an initial grumpy arrival following a long flight. Room: Can’t really complain due to our free upgrade but the room was clean and well kept. Maid service was, on the whole, good although there were a couple of days when we didn’t get fresh towels. The fridge was not always replenished daily either but a quick call to the front desk saw them send someone up within half an hour so it wasn’t much of an annoyance. Air conditioning was good and there was a fan above the bed which we opted to have on during the night as it was just cool enough to sleep with it on rather than freezing ourselves with the AC. Bed was comfy and we both slept pretty well during our stay. Room service was hit and miss. One day it took 2 hours, another it took 45 mins. Food was nothing to write home about. Pools: Cannot comment on any other pool than the Hideaway as we didn’t use them but the Hideaway pool was, for the most part, great. Pool butlers will get you set up for the day on sun loungers with towels and remember your preferences on future days. The waiters and waitresses taking drinks orders were great, checking regularly if you needed anything. Henry in the swim up bar was a fab bar tender and was very friendly. Big shout out to Cynthia and Milton from the Vibe team who were some of the friendliest people around. Cynthia especially is such a bubbly, positive person and remembered our names during our stay which was really nice. The pool is quite chilled during the morning but come the afternoon, it can get quite rowdy and party like. The water got incredibly hot from midday onwards; it was honestly like bath water! The pool underneath the Dorado restaurant was much cooler as it was mostly in shade and a nice place for an afternoon float when the main pool got too loud. Mosquitos: Usually get bitten to shreds however myself and fiancé only had a couple of bites each during our 2 week stay. We just used standard supermarket deet spray on an evening when going out for food. Pleasantly surprised. Food: Unfortunately for us, this is where we feel the resort lets itself down. We are not massive foodies, nor would we consider ourselves overly picky eaters, but I would say the food at the hotel was a 3.5/5 at best. The buffet was very vast and plentiful and there was always something to eat. Typical fare such as bread, pastries, cereal and fresh fruit for breakfast. Omelette and crepe stations were great and hot options such as bacon, sausage and baked beans etc were also available. For Hideaway and Diamond Club guests, you could dine at the Dorado restaurant for breakfast, which had beautiful views and table service, it was a really nice way to start the day. Breakfast was probably my favourite meal of the day. For lunch, again you had the buffet option or there were burgers and nachos available at the pool side. Food trucks were also around the main complex but we didn’t try those. You could also dine at Dorado which had mainly steak or seafood options so we only went once as we are not big seafood fans. In the evenings, we worked our way around the a la cartes. The first two nights we tried the Steakhouse and the Italian and had an hour long wait for a table at both. The steaks were decent enough but we found the side dishes and all of the food at the Italian to be lukewarm at best when it came out. Also, at the restaurants, they seem to either over season everything or don’t bother at all there doesn’t seem to be an inbetween. The Tex Mex restaurant wasn’t particularly great and my beef brisket was massively over done and the side dishes of mac and cheese and fries were cold. I also had severe stomach cramps and stomach issues later on in the evening after visiting this restaurant. We didn’t bother with the Hibachi table as we’ve done it before at other places but did try the normal Zen menu. Again, food very over done and really small portions - order several options. My partner did say the beef skewers were nice but you only got one. Didn’t try the Caribbean or Agave restaurants as the menus didn’t appeal. Taj (Indian) was 100% the best restaurant for us, food was hot, cooked really well and really tasty. We only tried it the last night we were there and I was sad we couldn’t go again. What really makes the restaurant experience unpleasant (aside from cold or over cooked food) was the temperature in the majority of them. Aside from the buffet and Steakhouse, none of them are air conditioned. The majority are open air or have fans but it really does not touch the sides and made for a really uncomfortable and unpleasant eating experience - you just wanted to go back to your room as soon as possible as this was literally the only place with decent AC to get any kind of respite from the heat. The Italian was the worst and probably the most miserable dining experience we had because of the heat. I felt as the holiday progressed that I was just eating out of necessity rather than enjoyment and that did put a dampener on my holiday somewhat. On a separate note, myself and fiancé both had stomach problems from the first Thursday of our 2 week stay until the end. We couldn't ever put our finger on whether it was a bug we caught or something we ate/drank/ice in drinks but from then on, anything we consumed going forward seemed to set it off. This made us incredibly cautious about drinking and eating for the remainder of our holiday as we kept on being poorly as a result and was a real shame. The coffee and ice cream shops were nice touches but we only used them once or twice as they are situated upstairs past the lobby and it seemed a bit of an odd location which was quite far away for us from the Hideaway side. Entertainment: Mixed - some nights were great especially when the Hideaway had its own shows which were all excellent. When it didn't, everyone was pushed into the main area and some nights it was nie on impossible to get seats for the 9pm show and we ended up just going back to our room early. We went in the sports bar to watch UFC302 and had an enjoyable evening in there. Food was OK, nothing amazing. Grounds: Absolutely beautiful! The resort is huge but so well manicured, everywhere was really neat and tidy and you could tell that everyone worked extremely hard to keep it that way. Wedding: We initially came out to stay at this hotel as we were viewing it for a potential wedding venue. I emailed the wedding team a few weeks prior to explain I was coming out and would love to meet with someone while we were here to discuss our wedding and just kept going round in circles with whoever replied so never got a meeting arranged. I tried again once we were there but was told it might not be feasible as it was too short a time to arrange something which was incredibly frustrating for me. I never heard back after this. It did give me red flags as I thought if they are this hard to arrange an initial meeting with, how difficult would it be to plan the wedding, especially when in the UK. This and the food/restaurants were big factors in us deciding against having our wedding here. People: Ending on a massively positive note, the staff here are the major star factor for us. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was so pleasant, helpful and polite. Nothing was ever too much trouble and we never met one grumpy member of staff. We were made to feel so special and welcomed. They really are a credit to the hotel. Would we recommend to others? Maybe. Would we return ourselves? Probably not.
