Nice Holiday with a Sad Ending

Jennifer259 (Llanelli, United Kingdom) on Jun 13, 2024

Our flight landed at Montego Bay Airport. To our surprise the Couples Group of Hotels has its own reception lounge within the airport arrivals area. This made life considerably easier for us. The hotel took charge of of suitcases and provided us with refreshments. We waited only 30 minutes for our transfer Coach to arrive. It was a two hour drive from the airport to the resort. Upon arriving at the resort the staff at reception dealt with us efficiently and we were soon in our room overlooking the Caribbean.  The Resort is built on a hill rolling down towards the beach at sea level. A shuttle mini bus takes the strain out of climbing up the hill. There are several paths and alleys to walk down from the reception / front lobby at the entrance to the resort which is at top of the hill. The resort is Italianate in appearance and is attractive. The resort is very photogenic. The accommodation blocks called Azelia and Begonia are both at the bottom of the hill near the beach. The resort is well maintained and in a good state of repair and condition. The grounds are well cared for. Our room was on the third floor of the accommodation block called Begonia. There is no lift. It takes 27 steps to reach the third floor. The bedroom was large with a wonderful view over the main swimming pool and the sea. Our bedroom had a super king double bed which was comfortable. There is lots of storage space for clothes and suitcases. The bedroom had both a radio and a television. The television was massive. It was at least 42 inch and dominated one wall of the bedroom. The television channel selection was mainly geared towards guests from USA and not to my taste. I did not use the radio. The lighting in the bedroom was near to pathetic. If you want to read a book or magazine in the evening it is impossible. For everything else the lighting was just about adequate.   The bathroom was fairly large with a walk in shower but with no bath. There was his and hers wash hand basins. The bathroom had lots of hanging space plenty of hot water. There was a small seating area near the balcony. The balcony was rather small but had two armchairs and a table. There was not enough space for a sun lounger. The balcony overlooked the swimming pool and a sea view. At breakfast we were entertained by a very accomplished violinist and at sun down a lone trombonist who played his way meandering through the resort. These were nice touches which place this resort hotel apart from all others. We remember these touches with fond memories. The main swimming pool is near the beach and which had a swim up to bar. There is also another swimming pool on the other side of the resort which is a mineral pool. There are lots of sun beds to go around. There were lots of different water sports available. The hotel provide a complimentary minibus to Dunns Falls a local attraction and for a shopping trip to Ocho Rios. There is also a complimentary minibus available to take you to Tower Isle which is another Couples Resort. The resort had three evening restaurants and one breakfast restaurant. All were beautiful, well run and served a wide variety of cuisines. All of the staff throughout the resort are very pleasant and helpful. This is a pleasant intimate resort with lots of niche places to relax. It never felt overcrowded. My holiday was spoilt by an injury to me caused by the negligence of a hotel employee. The immediate first aid treatment and assistance from the hotel management was good. However the efficiency and attention to detail shown in its running of the hotel was not reflected in the shambolic way that the Hotel and it’s advisors dealt with my compensation claim. This took over a year to settle which I think is pretty “bad show”

Nice...but look at other options

My Fiancé arranged a birthday surprise trip here. She packed my bag and leaving Atlanta, I had no idea where I was going. She managed to keep our destination a surprise until we arrived in Montego Bay! Great job "S"! First to know...If you fly to Montego Bay and go to Couples San Souci...It's a 2 hour van drive. Upon arrival you can have a cocktail or 2 at the Couples booth but understand you'll have to hold it for a while. They do stop halfway at a gift/bar/convenience/restroom place so you can unload and load. Once at the property we found the grounds to be very beautiful. My fiancé and I have traveled throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, etc. The grounds are lush and beautiful. The staff was friendly. The first thing we noticed was there are lots of stairs! That was fine with us because we could work off the food and cocktails. We found out later, it was just to work out the cocktails. Our room was wonderful! Very spacious and a balcony that overlooked the clothed beach and waterspouts area. The bathroom had a shower built for 4 and was very bright. There is no in-room mini bar as we are accustomed as Palace Resorts Members (later on that). There is a mini-fridge that had some beer, juice and water. In your room you get to sturdy re-usable water containers with a screw cap with retainer so you cant' lose the top. There are water and Ice stations located throughout the property so you can refill. Speaking of the property...It is small, which is good, and not good. You have to walk outside to get everywhere, and did I mention the stairs, lol. A good touch are the umbrellas in your room which will come in handy if it rains and you need to walk anywhere...to a restaurant, bar or the water station. There are no covered walkways on the property. Back to the room. For your mini-bar the resort provides you with an order card. This card has options for you to select items you wish to have stocked in your fridge. It has to be placed on the outside of your door handle by 1 am for the next day. We encountered this...We arrived and found that we didn't need some items in our fridge and wanted more. We also didn't have any hard liquor left in our room as advertised. Upon arrival to our room we asked for Whiskey and Tequila and Soda Water. We did not receive them. We ordered on a door card the next day and didn't receive. We don't drink much but want what we want when we want it. Calls to room service were greeted with kindness and understanding but no action. Food There is room service and it is limited and not so good which was our experience with most of the food options at the resort. The first night my Fiancé and I dined, we both ordered the "catch" of the day which was Mahi Mahi. We were brought an appetizer which, like many resorts, is pre-prepared and delivered to all before dinner. I can't remember what that was but couldn't have been bad or great as I didn't remember. However, when we did receive our meal, about 15 minutes after finishing our appetizer, it was clear the meal was sitting for sometime. The plate was warm but the fish and vegetables were cold. We mentioned this to our server and she was kind and understanding...maybe because this happens a lot. She offered to re-submit the order. We figured they'd re-heat the plate rather than prepare a new one, but either way we didn't want to wait and we decided to leave. The rest of our week was similar... Here are some of the low lights... There are about 3 real restaurants on the property, not including the pool side or beach options. Those three restaurants are closed 3 days a week for special dinners which on our stay were rained out for 2 of the 3. When rain comes, all resort guests are shoved into a small venue for dining. Food is way below average for an all-inclusive based on my experience. (will note later) Service way slow and below average, but staff is very friendly. Liquor choices way below average. Very limited choices and the choices are more limited venue to venue. For instance, my Fiancé enjoys a vodka/tonic. Each night the vodka choices vary from bar to bar and so does the availability of tonic. Room service although available is not timely. When you order they will tell you the expected time. Order an hour before you want it. Breakfast... Breakfast has options, but a good Hilton or Marriott is superior. Staying for a week the options become old. Fruit is less than the quality anywhere in the US and everything else is mediocre at best. My Fiancé chose this property and location for its uniqueness. Couples San Souci caters to those who wish to have access to a nude pool, beach and activities. She chose this location for that attraction. So... If you have no desire to nude sunbath or to hang out with other nude folks, there is no need to worry. The property has two small beaches. The traditional beach or main beach has palapas and is where the non-motorized water sports are located. (more on that in a bit) Steps away from the main beach is a bar/restaurant and a pool, complete with a swim up bar. The best beach, in my opinion is Sunset Beach is the nude beach. It is a short walk from the main property and secluded from the resort. It is mandatory that you are nude. It isn't topless, it is nude. At this beach, which is bigger than the main, you'll find palapas, an inviting shore for Sea bathing as well as the pool which is the center of attraction. The pool area on the nude side of the resort is self-sufficient. The pool features lounges and umbrellas as well as a swim up bar. It has its own snack bar and a buffet lunch served from about noon to 3 every day. Pro tip!! If you are at the nude pool plan on having lunch closer to the opening hour as 3 times during the week we opted to eat later and they ran out of Hot Dogs, Rolls and other food items. Also, twice the pool bar ran out of Club Soda and there was a wait to get more Vodka. I find it hard for a place to run out in an all inclusive. The pool open around 9 in the morning until around 5 for nude guests. After 5 the area is used for dining After 9 a couple of days a week there are nude themed events. Further notes about the nude area. The area, although nude, is not sexual. It's not a "swinger" or sexual place, it's for nudists. My Fiance' and I enjoy being nude and this was a wonderful surprise. It was a little "tame" for us as we expected a little more "spice" to the experience. All the folks at the pool were very nice and this resort if for couples only. We enjoyed getting our "all over" tan. Take aways... Food: Below average Service: Below average. Liquor:below average The opportunity to be nude in a wonderful, lush tropical environment seems to be the calling card. Most of the guests during our stay 5/18 to 5/25 were at the nude area. How do I know? There are less than a couple of hundred rooms and we ran into the same people all week all over the resort and we would go to the "traditional" beach to use water craft and that beach was pretty empty. Watersports... If you are a scuba diver as I am, you can dive everyday and it's' included in your stay. Granted, there are better places to dive, but having learned and done most of my diving in New England, this is awesome. Hobie Cats, snorkeling, paddle boards, pedal boats are all free, all week. I didn't see many people taking advantage. Overall take... Expensive Nude experience Nice people Nice rooms lush and beautiful location sub par service sub par food 2 hour ride each way limited liquor choices running out of food running out of liquor choices For my Fiancé and I, we are glad we made the trip and it was the most amazing Birthday present ever! Couples is not cheap and when a resort runs out of food or liquor or other choices you wonder how valuable you are and we will choose not to allocate our dollars to this chain again. I said I would compare this to my other experiences. Your mileage may vary. The only value we say at this resort was the ability to be nude. This is where we think the premium is paid. People are willing to overlook many things in order to have the ability to be naked. Just saying. Although we enjoy an all over tan, the value isn't here for us. Palace Resorts...as promised The male half has been a Palace member since 2006. They do not have a nude option but an adult only option in Sun Palace in Cancun. Simply stated, I compare everywhere I stay and experience to Palace(HardRock)Resorts. I get value for the dollar, they never run out and I have many choices. My two cents.

Beautiful and relaxing!!!

Jeanne P (Florence, Mississippi) on Jun 08, 2024

Honest personal opinion…we are repeaters at CSS. The service, staff, facilities, grounds, food, etc. have always been EXCEPTIONAL! After reading some of the recent reviews we were worried. Could things really have changed that much in 18 months? The answer is a resounding NO. Our trip was perfection. Did we encounter a couple of bumps during our visit that were unexpected or not just as expected? Of course we did. The staff are just as human as we are and I know I screw up something somehow every single day. We, as visitors, get that. If there is a mix up or an issue, they do their level best to fix whatever happens. The staff is incredible at this resort and work their behinds off to not just satisfy everyone but to make their visit an experience to remember. And they do an amazing job at it. If you visit CSS and have a bad trip, I’d venture to say there isn’t anywhere in the world you’d find the “perfection” you are seeking. Lighten up. Enjoy the beauty. Get to know the amazing people who make up the family of staff. Only YOU and your reactions/ attitude can create a bad vacation here. If something truly and validly is concerning you, then talk to a member of staff or Pierre. They will bend over backwards to make it right. Getting on FB and blasting after the trip is not only petty but doesn’t make anyone aware IF there really is an issue that could be addressed and handled before anyone else encounters it. Rant over! ?? Now on to the greatest part. We stayed 6 nights and did a vow renewal on our 20th anniversary. Jodian did a fabulous job arranging our renewal everything was beautiful. I highly recommend utilizing this service. The venue was stunning, decorated perfectly, and she was attentive to each detail. Dane did a wonderful job of capturing this special time for us with his amazing photography. He joked with us and made us feel at ease. Our room was cleaned everyday by Jaqueline. She was super friendly and so sweet, never scolded us for our messy room, and went above and beyond by decorating our bed beautifully after our renewal. Ashley from entertainment kept us on our toes with her humor, excellent personality and overall friendship. Mickhugh is always a great entertainer, charismatic, and exceptional person overall. If you see him ask about T-shirts. This was our first time to meet Dylano. He is an absolute asset to the CSS family. He always has a ready smile and is ready to engage in some friendly banter. Ruth from the Spa gives amazing massages and even better is a truly kind, spiritual and caring woman. Even if you don’t do a massage, get to know her. She will make your day brighter. Shadeen tries her best to keep all the bartenders in line. She is a spitfire and will go out of her way to ensure you are having a great time. Lemar and Nicoy were also a joy to be around. They kept us entertained and laughing while we sat at the bars. Keyon, Kobe, and Jacob in the lobby are fabulous. When the ATM at the resort wasn’t working they made arrangements for us to be driven to an ATM in town and Jacob even walked with me to get some cash. These staff members are AMAZING. There are so many more that made our stay the best and I do wish I could remember everyone’s name to thank them here. Last but not least is Pierre. He is always around making sure everything is up to par and that everyone is having the best time possible. We actually got to have the honor of him sitting at our table during the repeater’s dinner and he was happy to answer questions and get feedback on the stay. If you haven’t been - BOOK NOW!! You will never regret it and make beautiful memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Romance abounds

LoriMikeS on May 28, 2024

If you are considering visiting Couples Sans Souci, GO! We just returned from a first time visit, and this is now one of our favorite resorts! With a romantic backdrop throughout the entire property, excellent service, food, accommodations, it makes the perfect destination for couples wanting a romantic getaway, or celebrating a birthday or Anniversay, as we were doing. Staff was friendly and your wish is their command. Spa service is out of this world, cannot recommend enough..couples massage in the "tree hut" over the water with sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks...more please!!! (Ask for Thelma, Amelia) Evening entertainment was good, drinks were always quickly replenished and we felt welcomed and appreciated for being there. As a travel agent I have sold this property on repeat, however, this was my first stay, and I cannot say enough!! Property is spotless too-with constant maintenance of the 35 acre property being done at all times.
