A beautiful week in a beautiful setting. Rebooked with NO hesitation!

tanwhite (Toronto, Canada) on Apr 09, 2024

We were at this lovely little Adults Only resort end of March. First time visiting DR after 20 trips to Cuba in the last dozen years, and enjoyed it so much we rebooked after being home just a few days. Lots of positives, a few so-so’s, couple negatives, but overall obviously pleased enough to rebook. I’ll try to keep it brief but I usually fail, so here goes. Flights/Airport Transfers – We flew out of Toronto with Air Transat Options Plus, prebooked our seats and food, absolutely zero issues either way. Comfortable flight, attentive cabin crew and two of the best landings in all of my times flying. Be sure when booking that AZS El Catey is where you are flying into, otherwise prepare for an hours-long bus ride. They sell gigantic ice-cold Presidente outside the bus (2 for 12USD), keep in mind they are gigantic beers and no bathrooms on the bus haha. Close to the airport and no stops, direct transfer. Grounds – IMMACULATE. Everywhere was absolutely spotless. Beautiful, well attended to site. Maintenance and upkeep being done continually with absolutely no detriment to enjoying the site. Lots of little spots to hang out, little swings in the trees, paths to walk etc. Room – we had a vibe room with the little plunge pool. Absolutely fantastic. Our maid was unbelievably attention to detail oriented. She kept the room spotless, left extra when requested and was extremely pleasant to chat with when we had the opportunity to see her. Pool boys came around every morning and afternoon to give the pool a little love and ours was in great condition the entire time. AC worked perfectly, no humidity or musty smell in the room. More hangers would be awesome as well as better water pressure. We were in a new building and showered off-peak times, and I still had a little struggle with the amount of long hair I have. Otherwise perfect. Viva Club representatives – total non issue. Had a polite conversation with Zacarias, he explained a little bit about it. We weren’t interested and told him as much, but I did enjoy the fact that he still waved and acknowledged us in passing daily with no further asks. Unsure why so many people have a hard time with this, a simple no thank you did the trick, no need to purposefully try to hide from them as I saw some mention before we went. Drinks – Edison in the Hip bar was an absolute gem. Beautiful person and makes some wonderful drinks. The ladies in the mornings for coffee also were wonderful. Ran out of mint for mojitos only one time so I was super pleased with that! Each day they had a mockup drink of the day to the left of the bar, so I got to try a few new ones I normally wouldn’t because they looked so delicious. Awesome idea. Food – as seasoned Cuba vets, we felt absolutely spoiled for choice here!! Food I thought was excellent. The best pineapple we have EVER eaten, I would pay a fortune to get pineapple that fresh and tasty here at home haha. Lots of fresh vegetables for making your own salads, meats all cooked and not sitting out raw on cold plates. Little fans placed all around so no flies would land on anything, awesome. My husband has a shellfish allergy and this was one of the BEST resorts we’ve ever been to for ensuring cross contamination was kept to a minimum. All baked goods, especially the croissants, were out of this world. We didn’t bother with the a la cartes as I like to choose a little bit of what I feel like (and I don’t need a big long drawn out seating for it) and I absolutely didn’t feel like we missed anything just being buffet babies. Speaking of, I super wish the omelet lady and the juice lady were swapped positions. Everyone huddles into the healthy corner in the way waiting, because she’s tucked so far in the back. It would make the flow in the main buffet so much better. The wood fired pizza ovens are INSANE. Absolutely delicious thin crust pizza with ooey gooey cheese on them. By the beach and in the main buffet, which turns into a pizza place for late night snacking after the shows. Staff/service – this one confused me a little. It may because of being there during holy week, but I am used to a much warmer staff. Everyone was polite don’t get me wrong, but most places had a very “speak when spoken to” vibe. We are polite people, friendly and tip well, and it doesn’t seem to matter here. So I just got my own coffee or juices or whatever we needed and didn’t worry about it. Towards the end of the week it improved, but it was a very odd thing. Obviously some standouts (looking at you, Luis in guest services!) but never in all of my trips for example have I sat down at a breakfast buffet and had someone holding coffee stare right through me and not offer me any. It was like we weren’t even there sometimes. Again not a deal breaker I can certainly retrieve my own coffee or silverware, but just a stark difference to what I am used to. Animation – these guys seemed awesome! They were always around but in a completely non-intrusive way. Zero pestering and everything we saw going on looked like a blast. Salsa dancing, archery, yoga in beautiful settings, bocce tournaments, drinking games, beach volleyball, aquafit etc etc etc. lots to do if you feel like it, zerooooo pushiness. Next time we go I may partake in some, this trip was for relaxing on the beach only. We are up with the sun types so didn’t take in any nighttime entertainment, but sitting by the little plunge pool we could hear some beautiful music being played and the acrobatic show looked stunning. Beach – hands down the most tropical beach I have ever laid eyes on. Sand so soft at points it felt like kids’ kinetic sand. Absolutely breathtakingly, stunningly beautiful. We had a full week of yellow flags and had an absolute blast playing in the waves. Tons of sea kayaks, boogie boards, stand up paddle boards etc to take out if you pleased, but just playing in the waves was fun enough. It’s on something like 16km of beaches, this was the first time I came home the same weight I went away at because we could walk off all the food and drinks all day long! And in our case, take a bubba mug full of mojito with us for the adventure haha. To the right of the hotel is a beautiful walk into a little town with lots of cantinas and shops, a surf school and lots of private residences people can rent. Very beautiful. To the left was somehow even more gorgeous. Quiet and staggeringly beautiful, there’s even a little palm tree swing! Sunsets here are absolutely gorgeous and not to be missed. All in all, I found it was excellent value for money and I would absolutely not hesitate to return here. Countdown is on. I now understand why there are so many returnees, glad we are joining the ranks. See you soon, beautiful Samana!
