Wedding in paradise

The property is lovely, the food and liquor above average. In terms of organizing a wedding it leaves something to be desired. As the parents of the bride we were peripherally involved with the planning of the wedding which included 36 guests. Communication with the Wedding planners was hit and miss sometimes a month or more before getting a reply to an emailed question. If you don't have a contract for a block of rooms you are not entitled to any concessions - the fact that we as a group booked 16 rooms and a wedding package counted for nothing. If you are trying to do a wedding on a modest budget be aware of the add-ons (plugging in the lights for the outdoor Coco Bar venue - $1000). Pretty much everything is an extra including additional meals and appetizers beyond the package (at an all-inclusive resort). If there is forecasted risk of rain the weddings are moved to a ballroom. In our case there was rain. We managed to move to a premium covered and lit venue which was not booked on that day for an additional $4K. It was a wonderful event in a beautiful venue (see pic) but they didn't make it easy. I would like to think or hope that the logistical failures we encountered checking in were an isolated event. Many of us booked the Reserve and an early check in. We arrived at the hotel at noon and were still waiting for a room at 4:00 pm. We finally insisted on any room that was ready and were willing to pay for an upgrade. we were told that none were available, while other members of our group checking in were offered upgrades. One member of our group that did not book Reserve was given a Reserve room hours before we got one. Similarly, some members of the group were assigned Concierges (part of the Reserve benefit) at check-in, we did not get one until the day after. These may seem like small issues in the overall scheme of things but for an upscale resort and brand that pride themselves on hospitality and service it was disappointing and to some of our group it felt deceitful. We travel to all-inclusive resorts about 3 times per year and I am not sure I would return.

We've just stayed here for an amazing 10 days and would highly recommend it. Due to booking quite late, the only room option to us was a reserve one which turned out to be a godsend as not sure we'd have opted for the reserve if we'd booked with more notice. I'd definitely advise booking / upgrading to the reserve if you are staying here as the perks were great. Nestor, our personal concierge, was fantastic and helped us book all our restaurants in advance and sent us daily messages with the days activities, helped us pre order our room service for when we had an early excursion and put us in touch with their excursions partner to help us book the Chichen Itza tour (a definite must-do). We also had access to the reserve pool which was our favourite as its was slightly more chilled than the main pool. The staff down there were fantastic and kept us topped up with drinks throughout the day, thanks so much Alfredo and the rest of the pool team! They also have free to use sun tan lotion down there which was handy when we ran out of lotion with half a day of our holiday left. As Reserve guests we also got to use the Sante restaurant which had a delicious menu for both breakfast and lunch, the bacon & egg waffles were a personal favourite for breakfast and the rib eye and the prawn tacos for lunch. So all in all, I'd say booking the reserve was well worth it. We tried a few different restaurants during our stay. My favourite was Tokimeku which was the sushi restaurant, we got the mixed sushi starters and they were superb! We also did the Teppanyaki experience where the chef cooks in front of you which was good fun. Sal, the steakhouse, was lovely and we got one complementary visit here, the steak was cooked to perfection. Lemon Fish was great and as the name suggests, offers a good range of fish dishes which were delicious. There are also some other restaurants over the family side, the only one we tried was Cielo but we weren't so keen on that mainly as the family side is so much more manic than the adults only side! The hotel is beautiful and we loved that it was surrounded by the mangrove which meant there was lots of wildlife to see. Coming from the UK we'd never seen Raccoons before and they were very cute, as were the Coati! The proximity to the beach is great and it was lovely to be able to take a nice walk along there or take our drink from pool side to beach side in the late afternoon. The entertainment was good, whatever you do, make sure you don't miss the Jaguar Warriors show, it was very special! I didnt catch his name but we also enjoyed the guitar playing, one man band performer. The only small change I'd make would be to have more seating around the evening bar area for seats of 2 people as a lot of the seating is geared towards big groups. A big shout out to all the staff who are working so hard and always have a smile on their face and greet you every time you walk past them. We cannot wait to come back and visit in the future!
