Liked it, but didn’t love it

Veronique S (Moncton, Canada) on Apr 05, 2024

I’ve been to Cuba many times. I love the country and the people. I liked this resort, but I didn’t love it. In other words, I had a great time, but no I wouldn’t return there, and no I wouldn’t recommend it to a friend. (I’m not going to talk about the food, it’s Cuba and there’s shortages everywhere) The room: you can tell it was nice at one point, but they definitely need a little love. Biggest disappointment for me: No towels I’ve been to the reception many times, I asked the maid. Wrote her notes. Left tips and gifts everyday. We only got towels on our last day. Also no toilet paper in our room, I’m glad we brought our own. No water in our room the two first day. Couldn’t get bottles anywhere. I had to buy them at the shop and get them refilled. The service: Coffee: they don’t serve coffee in the buffet. You have to go get it at the coffee shop or at the lobby (when it’s not broken), and the lineups can be long. Depends where you are… coffee shop, beach bar, pool bar, and piano bar = amazing. Lobby and buffet.. could be better. The beach: Nice, but we’ve seen nicer beaches in Cuba. Very rocky, bring your water shoes. Only a few chairs. You’ll have to wake up early to get one. Pros: gardens (very well kept ground), snack bar is quick with good burgers, a la carte restaurant are delicious (for Cuba). The gym was great, well maintained. Cons: service is lacking, basic necessities (towels, toilet papers and water) were not easily accessible, no coffee in the buffet for breakfast. No enough chairs around the pool and at the beach.

Adios Cuba

Charlie D (Ottawa, Canada) on Apr 04, 2024

Many low-class loud groups yelling & swearing in pools. Guests mostly Quebec French over 75 made resort feel like retirement home. Hospital grade food. Got sick. Nice Alegance room. Nice staff. Grounds amazing. Lack of chairs. Always towel game players. Rocky ocean front but amazing water. Nothing else to say. We wont be visiting Cuba until the economy cleans up.

Sadly not the best hotel

Barb M (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico) on Mar 30, 2024

Sadly I must give this hotel a very poor rating mostly due to the food. I went on a WestJet vacation and although the WestJet part of the vacation, flight, transport, representative, were ok I think WestJet needs to reevaluate their association with this hotel. Food was very sub par and I am fussy nor was my expectation very high. Hotel ran out of booze I was never once offered a drink by wait staff alway had to go to the bar. Is this a thing in Cuba? Alway had to go to the bar just to get coffee, it was scarce on the resort. Our room was ok could have used a good deep cleaning and it was pretty shabby. The drapes hung off the rods, sheets had holes, dresser drawers didn’t close. I had to get 5 new room keys in seven days. The pool had only 3 umbrellas for shade, very few people used the pool as a result . On a more positive note the workers were all very friendly and the grounds were immaculate and really very nice. The beach was lovely. I know Cuba is hurting for tourist dollars but I feel this hotel needs to be better managed and maintained if they want tourists to keep coming.

Valentin El Patriarca

thersej2015 (Halifax, Canada) on Mar 28, 2024

Just got back from two weeks at the Valentin and here are my thoughts. The good -The people on the resort and Cuba in general were all super nice the resort itself felt super safe was never worried walking around even when I was by myself -The size of the resort we really liked how small it was wasn't a long walk to the beach, pool or lobby -The beach was very nice it was small but had lots of chairs with shade, water was a bit rocky and seaweedy going in but once you got past it it was nice -The pool was okay could use better cleans or more frequent ones but it was a good size and the bridges over gave some nice shade for people that wanted to be in the water but not in the direct sun. -The wifi worked good throughout the resort not in the rooms though. Now for the bad -The food I am a picky eater but I can normally get through my time away with no issues but this resort was pretty bad didn't have much selection and was always the same stuff, first place I've been that did not have pancakes, waffles or French toast in the mornings no bacon, they did have eggs and amazing bread. The snack bar did have good fries and hamburgers and the pesto pasta was very good on the days they had it -The supply was a big issue they ran out of a lot of things eggs, beer, fanta Pina coladas, mojitios, eggs, bread to name just a few I was told when I was there that in Cuba the big chain resorts get first pick of all the food and whatever is left over goes to the smaller resorts so it unfortunately not their fault but definitely made ours and pretty much everyone we spoke to at the resorts stay not very good. -They did not have blended drinks which is a minor issue but one of the things I really look forward to on a vacation is a nice blended Miami vice so was very unfortunate I could not get one anywhere on the resort. -The chairs were awful very old so felt like you were laying straight on the plastic. -The rooms our room was okay they maid came in to clean it everyday but they are pretty run down so they still felt dirty, lots of people where saying they had no hot water we were lucky that ours worked great and I liked that there was a stand up shower and a bathtub with a detachable shower head, the biggest issue we had with our room is the door never stayed locked we had to go to the lobby every morning to get someone to come down and fix it and when it wasn't fixed the door would still open even with the dead bolt locked so that was not good we also heard it was happening to every other room luckily it was pretty safe and had a lot of security walking around.

I really wish Cuba was better

Doug S on Mar 26, 2024

As much as they're trying, I really don't want to give Cuba a bad review. Been to Varadero 4 times and this was the worst. Bar and restaurant staff were moody or showed they didn't want to be there, housekeeping was horrible. Ran out of eggs many days, drinks were not good (no vodka). Jeep tour was really bad, don't waste your money. I really hope things change for this country, as I do love it here. If I come back, it won't be to this resort.
