Very beautiful and clean hotel, staff members are welcoming and helpful. Elsy played her role as animator very well through several games on the beach

Just returned from my stay at Melia Las Americas. Location: 10/15 minute drive to downtown. Will cost you about $15 one way. If you are looking for a taxi, call Leonardo at 54763236. He's got at 1954 Chevrolet. Either call him via WhatsApp or have the concierge guys outside or reception call him. Beach: Amazing! Plenty of chairs and palapas. If you like to walk the beach, the stretch is not that long but long enough. Beach bar service: the ladies at the beach bar were less than happy to be there. Not friendly at all. When they ran out of mint for the mojitos, it was simply "Mojito, no" rather than walking to one of the other bars to replenish. The restaurant closest to the beach was closed the entire time - which means that you'd have to go to the main buffet to eat lunch. This is an inconvenience. Buffet: Meh. Lack of variety. I mean, there is always something to eat but you may have to circle around a couple of times. The buffet is actually quite small. There is a variety of fish, chicken, beef, pork on the grill every day. Freshly cut up veggies, soups, fresh fruits, desserts, pastas, veggies. It's Cuba. Please realize that you are visiting a communist country and no, you will not find Starbucks or Burger King. The staff working behind the food stations (grill, cheese and deli station) were very miserable (dinner time). The servers were friendly. Slow, but friendly. Entertainment - Not entertaining at all. They had a DJ play, some live singers. Room: I had an older room. A/C was crap. No hot water for a few days. Mold on the ceiling. They don't care. Period. Water pressure in shower was terrible. Shampoo, Body Wash and a bar of soap in each room. If you are not going to use them as such, use them to wash your clothes. There is a table, 2 chairs, an ashtray and a clothes rack on the balcony. Your water bottle in your mini fridge is replenished daily. I had 2 single beds in my room. Not very comfy but bearable. TV in room worked - sometimes. WiFi: It sucked. No other way of putting it. I picked up a stronger signal from every other hotel nearby. Reception: Elizabeth, you are the best!!!!! Late Check Out: This is a mystery. A bunch of guests were talking about it and everybody got a different answer from reception. Typically it is $15/$20 per hour. The Currency: When it comes to buying something on the resort, I felt like I was being ripped off every time. Everything is in USD but you can use Canadian Dollars or EURO. They will do an exchange rate calculation. When on the bus from the airport to hotel, they will try to sell you the local currency. NOBODY wants it. Don't bother no matter what the guy on the bus says. This is for their own personal gain. If you are from Canada, you can tip using loonies and toonies. If you are travelling with Sunwing/WestJet, the representative was NEVER there and they don't post the pick up times for the airport (like the other travel companies do). Thank you David at the Golf Desk who helped me to find out what time the airport bus pickup time was. PSA: Be mindful of other people. Please leave your blue tooth speakers in your room and don't bring them to the beach or lobby bar. Nobody wants to hear your music (no offense). Please do not bring glassware to the beach. Just don't. The paper cups work just as well. These are things that the security on the beach should enforce. We had a few incidences of each. The Hotel industry is all about hospitality. Rather than making accommodations, everything was "This is not Canada or This is not Germany" (depending on where the guest was from). The staff has to realize that each guest has paid for all of the amenities and fairly, are expecting them. I think that the hotel manager should make more of an effort to address the repeated deficiencies and perhaps mingle with guests rather than having to hear about it on TripAdvisor.
