Gaia Restaurant

I can not begin to tell you how amazing our fairmont experience was. You must go to the Gaia restaurant and hopefully you will be lucky enough to have Cesar as your waiter. His friendly demeanour and expert suggestions from drinks, appetizers, to our main dinner he made our dinner experience unbelievable. Thank you Cesar
Great service and food, cold pools and lots of seaweed on beach

We're a family of four (two teens) who visited the Fairmont, all inclusive plan. We have stayed at other all-inclusive 5* properties in the past. This hotel is better for families with young kids, and couples who want a quiet vacay. We would have enjoyed some night music, shows, activities, something! Pros and cons: PROS: --Friendly service everywhere (except at check-in, strangely). Helpful concierge and great staff overall --Delicious food, even for vegetarians. Breakfast was great. --Beautiful grounds, appreciated having bikes for getting around --Nice to have 2 queen beds --Nice spa treatments -- nothing amazing, but nice enough. Go early to use the jacuzzi and steam room. Book in advance. CONS --Really surprised none of the recent reviews have mentioned the huge quantities of seaweed that make walking along on the beach, swimming close to the property, impossible. This was really disappointing despite their efforts to manually remove the seaweed -- made very little difference despite their hard work. -- Cold/unheated pools! --Eco hotel so no maps or info guides available on paper. At check-in I wasn't told what free activities were included, for instance. You have to download the app, which is not so great. I wish they had mentioned some of the activities taking place on a TV screen in the lobby. I missed a few things I would have enjoyed (like ritual ceremony at spa, dance at cenote). Also, there are no activities in the evenings (shows, music, etc). --We ate one meal that wasn't included in our all inclusive plan at Saffron, a Thai restaurant at Banyan Tree. The waiter refused to accept they got our order wrong, told us they would remove the unordered item from the bill, and didn't follow through. We paid over $400 for a vegetarian meal for four people with 2 appetizers, 3 mains, and 1 dessert (no alcohol, only water). Unbelievably overpriced. --Tennis course hire is $80 per hour! Golfing is extra, as are most activities. --Whopping resort fee added at the end. This felt unnecessary after what you pay to stay here. TIPS --The free boat ride is included -- 30 mins long, very relaxing. Book in advance. --A free Catamaran ride for 3 people is included. Book in advance. --Make your restaurant reservations in advance before you go. Some restaurants are closed on certain days.
