Disappointed Stay – Not Truly Family-Friendly or 5-Star Service
Laura U (Veracruz, Mexico) on Jun 14, 2025
Disappointed Stay – Not Truly Family-Friendly or 5-Star Service I booked Fairmont Mayakoba with high expectations, drawn by their marketing around family-friendly amenities like the kids club, wellness offerings, and golf. Unfortunately, the reality didn’t live up to the promise. The kids club is advertised for children ages 5–11, but in practice, it seems only suitable for very calm 5–6 year olds. If your child is a typical, energetic 8 or 9-year-old, be prepared for the staff to say they “can’t manage” them. It’s unreasonable to expect older kids to follow the same behavior expectations as much younger children, especially when the hotel promotes the club as an inclusive space for all kids in that age range. If you’re hoping to enjoy the spa or a round of golf while your child enjoys the kids club—this is not the place. Either reconsider your plans or factor in the added cost of hiring a babysitter through the hotel. Service also left a lot to be desired for what is branded as a 5-star resort. Staff seemed overwhelmed and tired, sometimes even visibly frustrated. This wasn’t during peak season—the hotel was at mid-capacity—so it’s clearly an issue with understaffing and management. I genuinely felt bad for the employees; the hotel needs to step up and support their team better. Food pricing is another mismatch. Expect luxury-level prices without the corresponding service or quality. For example, a simple croissant at the café runs $15+tip, and room service charged us $30 for a kid’s milkshake and slice of cake. On top of that, there are few to no options nearby to purchase snacks, small items, or groceries. The hotel is designed so you’re basically locked into dining at their restaurants for every meal. Be prepared—Fairmont has made sure you don’t have alternatives. Lastly, although they market themselves as a family-friendly destination, there are surprisingly few engaging or appropriate activities for kids—especially if your child has energy (in other words, is a normal 9-year-old). In summary: beautiful setting, but the experience felt more frustrating than relaxing. Not the right choice for families who were sold on the idea of convenience and quality time.
Definitely Coming Back

I was walking to the lobby in the heat and Omar was kind enough to pick me up and give me a ride. Love this place. Beautiful, super clean and comfortable and the outdoor shower was amazing! I'll definitely be back.
