Great 2 weeks in Varadero. Go Now

690karlk (Canada) on Feb 06, 2026

This was my ninth visit to Cuba and second time staying at this resort and I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 week stay despite the many days of inclement weather. I was there from 19 Jan to 03 Feb 2026 It is the staff that makes this resort such a wonderful place. Despite the hardships, that the staff face when off duty and there are many, they cheerfully and consistently go above and beyond to ensure guests enjoy their stay at the Roc Arenas Doradas. It would be impossible to name them all however a special mention goes out to "Princess Dianna" in the buffet, Yaheny and Linet in the specialty restaurants, you always put a smile on my face and made me laugh. Yvonne, the NexusTours Sunwing/Westjet customer service representative is truly credit to her employer and a wonderful person to talk to. Thank you for many delightful hours of conversation! Food depends on your personal palate. It's well known that Cuba is not a destination for "Foodies" however the buffet, be it for breakfast, lunch or supper always had an appetizing selection. Due to the situation in Cuba, there were days where not everything was available, such as bacon, butter, tomatoes, french fries etc. Personally, the food was fine, I always had something good to eat, never went hungry. Truly, they do the best with what they have made available to them. The abundant variety of deserts and Helados (ice cream) was great. Unfortunately the beach restaurant “Galleon” was closed during my stay for unknown reasons. It would have bee perfect for lunch, as it is very close to the beach. Beverages: this has significantly changed since my last visit to Cuba 2 years ago. This time getting a Pina Colada, Mojita was hit and miss as they were frequently not available at any of the locations. Milk remains powdered milk. Coffee makes the world go 'round and thing get ugly if I don't get my cup of coffee in the morning. Tip; skip the very weak Americano coffee in the buffet and get one from the lovely ladies at the coffee bar and enjoy the good life! Reception: The ladies at reception don't always have it easy when things don't go according to plan. They were always polite and provided a level of customer service second to none. Thank you ladies! Rooms: I saw both the remodeled rooms and the older style rooms. I prefer the older style rooms as the remodeled rooms have a poorly designed shower and no matter how hard you try water leaks out onto the floor making a mess. My room was on the upper floor of block 800. The room itself contained AC, a TV, (which was not used), and a mini fridge. The room itself was somewhat dated, but perfectly adequate,it was spacious and had a good sized balcony with two tables and chairs. The maid always did an excellent job keeping the room clean and stocked with bottled water and shower items. I never saw any critters and the water was always hot. My only complaint is the "Key Card Locks", they were a pain 10 years ago and they are much worse now. I had to make a total of 4 trips over 2 weeks before the lock assembly was switched out with another used lock assembly. After the key card lock assembly was replaced, I never had another problem. I frequently saw the red vehicle spraying the resort to prevent mosquitoes in the early morning before most guests were up and about. Beach: Before arrival of the lengthy duration of the inclement weather, the beach was beautiful and clean. I enjoyed many hours of snorkeling in the crystal clear waters and went sailing several times. When the storms hit the beach became empty for days on end. Within the resort there were never any problems with electricity, food etc. Outside the resort that is another world from which we the tourists were isolated. When you go, bring medicine such as Costco (Kirkland brand) drugs and vitamins as they are generally half the price of the name brand so you can bring along twice as much. Talk to your dentist and ask for a box or two of the little toothpaste tubes and toothbrushes that we all get for free after a visit. My local dental office has generously provided cases of samples for me to give away. Final thoughts: Go, just do it and go now. Cuba is rapidly changing and I'm not sure what the future will be like for Cuba and it's lovely people.

Everyone should give Roc Arenas a chance because it is a wonderful picturesque location with a long white sand beach

We have been at Arenas Dorades 14 times and have always had excellent service. Staff are very accommodating and will go out of there way to make things better. There was no shortage of anything, alcohol or food. The food has improved over the years and no longer bland. We would like to recommend this resort to anyone, it is like a second home Christine & Douglask
