Beach not up to scratch
john e (Liverpool, United Kingdom) on Sep 03, 2024
This was our 4th visit to the dominican republic and our 1st in la romana a 4 weeks stay the hotel is of a good standard although dated the pool and bars are good and the entertainment staff work their socks off it is what you would expect from a grand bahia there are issues with the lo atuon. A river runs directly into the sea and the sea water is cloudy and does not clear and an oil refinery can be clearly seen from the beach there is no provision of a shuttle to a better quality of beach the taxi fares are extortionate $75 to la romana this fare is one way if you stay over 3 hours it is remote and feels as if trips out are your only escape sauna island is beautiful and catalina island not far behind. We enjoyed our stay but be prepared for a holiday at the pool you won't use the beach.
More like a 3* resort to that of an advertised 5*

This review is based on our own personal experiences after holidaying here in August 2024 Transfer Bus from airport to Resort was small, minimal leg space, and uncomfortable seats for a long 90+minute journey. Be prepared for a long check in, nearly 2 hours it took, after a long haul flight; with no A/C In the Lobby and repeated mosquitoe bites wasn't the best first impression of the Hotel Hotel room was large, but definitely dated, bathroom was poor and of low standard regarding the cleanliness and Slap dash maintenance / repaira. The A/C in the room was noisy but worked well. Beds were comfy with flat pillows. House keeping were friendly, happy, and worked tirelessly attending to rooms daily, keeping the mini bar well stocked and replenished it. The beds would be made daily, alongside the emptying of the bins and floors cleaned in Hotel room. The footpaths were of poor standard, numerous tiles broken throughout the resort, dangerous to those in sandals or indeed bare feet. Not enough sun loungers and canopies around the pool, especially during the manic weekends when the locals would ascend. Pool would be busy with not enough Staff to cope with the extra demand. Unable to enjoy the sea/ beach due to numerous people receiving Jelly fish stings, so only the brave entered the sea. Although the sea wasn't the Caribbean turquoise as you'd expect it was still a nice clean beach to walk on. Cleanliness and H/S around the Pool / Bar area was poor, There was constant activity around the Bar with Wasps and Flies; we avoided drinking the cocktails after observing several members of staff add liquids to the blenders which were also a sticky sweet haven to the insects, Staff didn't chase the wasps /flies away, instead they just added the liquids to the blender, blitzing up a cocktail of alcohol and insect parts. DISGUSTING This resort is miles away from any where, there is no shuttle bus to jump on to go out exploring; taxis are avaliable from reception, however, I dont know how expensive this would be considering how far away from everything the Resort is. We went on 1 excursion, the adventure Buggies, which cost just over £350 GBP for 3 x people. We booked the excursion through our Travel Rep at TUI. We weren't informed that it would take us over 2 hours to travel to the destination. Thinking that it would be an experience involving a handful of guests we were shocked when we were placed in a line of Buggies of approximately 50 other vehicles and literally drove on a dusty road for approx 30 -45 minutes .. Not the adrenaline rush we thought we would be experiencing. The rave in the cave was something ele though, great experience and the best part of the day. The small shops in the resort are well stocked with souvenirs but offer limited choice of daily essentials, they are highly over priced $30 for a child's football. We went to the onsite casino for a night of "entertainment".... where we were met by disgruntled unhappy looking Staff who had no interest or intention In helping out the novices. On a positive, the food served in the Buffet Bar was plentiful, tasty, offered a huge variety and we all enjoyed the food. Staff were attentive, happy and wouldn't let you sit with an empty glass, no matter how many times you emptied your glass. We ate at the 3 onsite all inclusive restaurants, have to say the Italian was our favourite. In previous reviews the food and staff were reported to be of a low standard; we ate here twice and both times the food was delicious and served at a fast pace, the Staff were friendly, attentive and worked very hard in offering Guests a positive experience. The Staff at the Lobby Bar were majority of the time busy but served each time with a smile and happy to make up any drink you desires. The daytime entertainment was repetitive... Entertainment Staff worked so hard with limited resources, come on Managers give these Guys a higher financial budget to play with. The same songs would be repeatedly played and if you enjoy Spanish Entertainment and dance songs then you will love this vibe. Entertainment and shows were certainly dated and we were so reluctant to sit and watch a show, as the theatre had no A/C and the uselss ceiling fans may have well just been hanging there for visual effect. Overall would we return? We wouldn't return Did we feel the thousands of pounds spent on this holiday was worth it No most definitely not Would we recommend this resort to family and friends No we would not Photos provided are from our bathroom in the resort

The sea was nice but I could not find any of the rare jellyfish I came to study.Good entertainment but no left handed ping pong bats wich made it diffcult to play. The door was very noisy so we had to enter through the patio door and balcony when we came back from drinking so to not the wake the kids. Water sports were good we sunk a few canoes but we weren't charged. We went out to the the island but lots of rocks stopped us from landing. On the whole would recommend the patio doors if you have kids. An absolutely lovely holiday but don't believe all you read!
Needs changes

Major changes needed in this stay. Shame because it could be amazing, just lacking details. When the problems did arise the staff did sort the issues out and take action. Stunning location, shame the sea is brown in colour. But again excellent location. *Beware of the mosquitoes*
Beautiful place, outrageously good service

My wife and I love coming to the DR. The places we've stayed in, always excellent and super friendly. However, Bahía Principe Grand La Romana stands out as very far beyond exceding expectations! Just one example, if you ask for something at the buffet, you better want it, because they WILL get it for you even if they don't have it. These folks mean business when it comes to making you relax and enjoy your stay. All smiles, full professionalism. Vladimil, Kelvin Pérez, Yovanny Núñez, José Rodríguez, Christopher, Ana Todd, David Vazquez, just to name a few of all the great staff, at all levels and departments without exceptions. Great facilities, but it's the people that bring it all to life. Jori Gomez
