Wonderful lobby and public spaces, really average room
ridmaster on Sep 25, 2024
When you pull up to the hotel, the lobby gives you the feeling like you're visiting a special boutique hotel. The room doesn't match it. It felt like the room had been poorly remodeled on the cheap. The mattress was just average. The toilet creaked when you sat on it so it was impossible to use it while someone else was sleeping your you'd wake them up. Also during the remodel they clearly removed the door to the main bathroom (you could see where it use do be) but there was only one light switch for the sink area, the toilet room (which had a door that wouldn't stay latched), and the shower so again, you had a hard time use it while someone was sleeping. Also the housekeeping staff apparently thinks everyone on vacation wakes up at 9am so make sure you put out a do not disturb door hanger. When you're finally ready to go out for the day you'll then need to specifically ask the front desk to have the room cleaned because you will have missed their normal window. The proximity to restaurants and shopping is great. We loved how centrally located it was and the front desk staff was as you would expect from this type of hotel. If I was taking another vacation to SF I'd probably pick a different hotel next time
So Good!

We stayed here for the weekend so we could attend two concerts at two different venues. The staff was incredibly warm, friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. It’s located within walking distance of The Fillmore, which is one of the venues we went to. Easy to get to and within walking distance of plenty of shopping, restaurants and even a Safeway in Japantown. Highly recommended. We will stay again!

Japantown Convenience

We had the chance to stay at the Kabuki Hotel in San Francisco during the first weekend of the Cherry Blossom Festival in April 2024. The last time we stayed at this hotel was approximately 9 years ago before the big remodel a few years back. The lobby space is now completely different. There are still some Japanese elements in the decor but the rooms have been completely changed and updated. One big change in the rooms was the removal of the deep soaking tubs that is a staple in Japanese homes and hotels. Although, they didn't remove the tub but rather, just covered it up with tiling. It seems like a wasted opportunity to provide another special feature in the room. As others have pointed out with regards to the bathroom, while the toilet does have its own door, there is no door between the shower/sink area and the rest of the room which can be a bit awkward if you're sharing a room. With the remodel though, the balconies are no longer connected. There is now a partition separating the balcony space for each room. Granted, the balconies are still as awkwardly small/shallow as they were before. Price wise, this is an expensive hotel considering amenities and quality and size of the rooms. What you're really paying for is the location. It is the only hotel that is directly connected to the Japantown mall. A word about the parking. You essentially have a few choices: 1.) take your chances with parking on the street 2.) park in the public garage of the Japantown mall, which does close during certain hours at night, so you won't be able to exit during that time, 2.) Valet parking with the hotel. Lastly, I would recommend booking a higher room if possible to enjoy great views of the City.
Cute, aesthetic, but worn

great hotel in a central location with a cute aesthetic and vibe, but it feels like the best days of the hotel are in the recent past. furniture, fixtures, and other aspects of the hotel are physically worn down. this tells me the hotel is as popular as i hoped it was, but it needs some tlc to bring it back to its former glory. also, both mattresses in my room were awful and not conducive to sleep. i loved the hotel’s staff, convenience, and aesthetic, but it needs a little polish.
