Good Stay, But a Shocking Checkout Turned It Into a 1-Star Experience
466ahmedj (Al Janabiyah, Bahrain) on Dec 01, 2025
I stayed at the Marriott Downtown NYC from last Friday until this morning. At first, everything seemed great. The staff were helpful, the room was decent, and although the limited number of elevators sometimes caused small lines, it was a minor inconvenience. Up until checkout, I genuinely felt the hotel deserved 4.5 out of 5 for the value and comfort. Unfortunately, my experience on the last day completely changed my impression. After having breakfast at Bill’s Burger, the restaurant inside the hotel, my wife and I returned to the room and then headed down to check out. As I approached the lobby, a staff member ran toward me accusing me of leaving without paying for breakfast and, shockingly, said this was considered “stealing.” I was genuinely stunned. I had assumed the breakfast would be charged to my room, which is standard in many hotels, and the way the situation was handled, essentially implying I was a thief, was completely unacceptable and unprofessional. I chose not to respond to the accusation, settled the bill, and left. A few hours later, I noticed multiple unexpected charges on my card. Two small amounts appeared, presumably for the breakfast and tip, followed by a large charge for the full cost of my stay, even though I had already paid the full amount at check-in. This forced me to make an international call to the hotel’s accounting department. I was kept on hold for over nine minutes while they tried to figure out what happened. When I mentioned that the call was becoming too long and costly, I was told they would try to remove the hold, which may take up to five business days. As a result, I am now traveling with almost a thousand dollars less available because of their mistake. Between being publicly accused of theft and the significant billing error that immediately affected my trip, I cannot overlook these issues. Despite the good start, the checkout experience was unacceptable. I am rating this hotel 1 out of 5.
A Quality Hotel In The Heart of FiDi
Max K on Nov 19, 2025
I stayed here recently and it was a very good experience. The property is very nice. In FiDi a few blocks south of Freedom Tower, it's located in a good area with easy access to a large subway hub The lobby is very nice with a traditional New York feel. The room is a good size and my view was west/south west with great views of the Hudson, Jersey City and more. It was clean when I got there and stayed that way with good housekeeping. Nice size bathroom with all the expected amenities. Water pressure is good too. The only issue with the room was the surprising lack of drawer space. Two drawers was all I had access too. If you're bringing a lot of clothes, plan on keeping some of them in your suitcase. I used room service a couple of times and it was quick. The food itself comes from Bill's Burger Bar downstairs and is pretty good. Think typical casual dining type of food. I would stay here again and recommend it for anyone else looking in the area.
Worst Marriott in the city

The worst Marriott. They don't have apple pay. They have the worst staff and check in. Don't recommend if for anyone especially if you sharing a room. They are horrible with allowing guests to check in. Front desk doesn't know what they are doing. Never had Any issues with Marriott besides this one!!!! Never recommend it
Very good stay and experience overall

Nice stay. Great location. Clean and functional hotel. Friendly staff. Nice fitness center. Excellent Concierge Lounge with fantast view. Biggest challenge was available bathrooms. Only had 1 very small one in Lobby and none in Fitness Center. Was not happy having to pay a Destination Fee that was only good for hotel bar and restaurant (run by 3rd party company) and that non-bottled alcohol was not allowed out of bar (a common use of $15 daily food/beverage credit). Also disappointed that credit was not able to be used for pantry items or in Concierge Lounge for drinks. Was happy that Fee included Mercer Labs Museum. Went there and had fantastic experience. Very cool and unique.
Roomy, comfortable accommodation in the heart of the financial district

I stayed here for business because of its proximity to the financial firm I was visiting. Great room with a view of the water and stunning buildings. Clean, moderately spacious room for New York, with a comfortable bed and bedding. Bathroom was roomy, too, with great water pressure and tons of super hot water. Fridge and coffee maker in the room were convenient. Toilets make a weird whining sound when flushed and you can hear the adjoining room's flushes which was disturbing at first but I got used to it very quickly and it became background noise. Room service from the restaurant downstairs was decent and quick. Starbucks on the first floor was never too crowded which was GREAT. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Gym was clean and well-appointed. Lobby has plenty of seating if you arrive before your room is ready. Bar in the front isn't open on Sundays or Mondays, but look out on Tues-Sat. It's a nice time and they pour good drinks. The very best thing about this hotel is its location though - right near everything you could want, including tons of shopping if you forgot anything or just want to grab some essentials for your stay like water or snacks that don't cost a ton (there's Target nearby). Way too many clothing shops - I could have come home with another full suitcase of beautiful things from H&M, Zara, Loft and more.
