Comfortable and friendly

Hannah A on Dec 28, 2025

The staff are profesional and friendly. Rudy at the front desk stands out for his exceptional customer service and ability to anticípate our group’s needs! All of the restaurant staff were attentive and responsive. The breakfast buffet has plenty of delicious options for both carnivores and vegetarians. There were many on-site activities to enjoy including table tennis, giant Connect 4, and nightly fire pits with S’mores! The ground are beautiful and well maintained. The room had comfortable beds and a pleasant view of the marina. Would definitely recommend!

Deeply Disappointing Stay

Utsav M on Dec 26, 2025

Our stay at Kona Kai San Diego was extremely disappointing and nowhere near what’s expected of a 4-star property. First, the rooms are very outdated and felt more like a 2-star motel or a Comfort Inn than a luxury resort. The room was super small, with holes in the curtains, peeling wallpaper, and an overall dingy feel. It honestly felt like a roadside motel room, not a resort. To make matters worse, there was visible dust on all the furniture and fixtures, and the linens and towels were not clean, which was unacceptable. The elevators were also out of order during our stay, with no visible effort or urgency to fix them. Because of this, guests—including us—were forced to carry all of their luggage up and down the stairs for three floors, which was extremely inconvenient and unacceptable. We were initially told that a maintenance request had already been made, but another staff member later admitted that the request was only submitted after we complained. The elevators were never fixed during the entire four days we were there. When we asked to switch rooms due to the poor condition, we were given keys to a room that was already occupied. Walking into someone else’s room was incredibly embarrassing and uncomfortable for both parties. After that, we had no choice but to return to the original room we were trying to escape. To top it all off, front desk staff sent a detailed report of our experience to the property manager and told us we would be contacted the next day. No one ever reached out. There was zero follow-up, accountability, or attempt to address our concerns. This property does not live up to its branding or price point. Poor maintenance, poor communication, and poor customer service made this a stay we will not be repeating. The only thing this property has going for it is its location, and even a 2-star hotel up the road would likely provide a better overall experience. I would not recommend Kona Kai San Diego to anyone expecting a true 4-star experience.
