WestJet is proudly the only Canadian airline that flies to the Carribean island of Bonaire. This is a world-class destination for water activities such as diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing.
Bonaire is one of the three ABC islands, which include Aruba and Curacao. They’re the westernmost islands in the Leeward Antilles and are outside of the Caribbean’s hurricane zone. With a Dutch heritage, the most spoken language is Dutch, followed by Papiamento and Spanish. Although Bonaire remains a special municipality of the Netherlands, this island doesn’t have European Union privileges.
The island of Bonaire is a fantastic destination for:
Water activities
Cycling tours
Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary
Salt pyramids and caves
Washington Slagbaai National Park
As one of WestJet’s newest destinations, there will be flights once a week from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport (YYZ) starting on December 12, 2023.
WestJet Vacations packages are available in select destinations.
Destination Basics
Bonaire’s weather is consistently warm, humid, and windy. The rainy periods tend to occur between October and January, and although it’s possible to have a tropical storm, Bonaire is located outside of the Caribbean's hurricane belt.
Bonaire’s entire coastline is a marine sanctuary because of the coral reef and the marine species that live around it. There are several lagoons on the island that attract large flamingo populations, and salt flats that cause the water to adopt a pinkish colour.
A vehicle is required to get around the island. It’s easy to hire a taxi and pay an hourly rate, or the majority of the tour operators can arrange transportation. Otherwise, there’s the option of renting a car as long as you have a valid driver’s license and are above the age of 21.
The American dollar (USD) is used across the island.
Canadians don’t require a visa to enter Bonaire, they only need a valid passport or permanent residency status for Canada.
The voltage in Bonaire is 127/220 V, with a standard frequency of 50HZ. Both North American and European plugs should work across the island without having to use an adapter.
