Room in bad condition

We have stayed before at Barcelo Colonial and Tropical,. However this time we decided to try the Beach and our room at the Tulum building was very poor.1. The room smell, which we left the garden door open to clear out a bit. 2. The phone was out of service 3. There was a noise coming from the electricity panel that didn't allow to sleep well the first night. They fixed on the second day. We received champagne glasses, but not champagne or whatever they planned. There was pop and beer cans in the minifridge, but I don't think it was for that since we also had glasses in the room. Notified reception and the cleaning lady, nothing done about it.4. There was old in the shower grout. It can used some bleach for deep cleaning. 5. On our last day, my husband had to wait 3 hours waiting for maintenance to fix our safe that didn't open. I had to run all over to report it twice to recepcion and had all the stress of the check out without being able to pack what was in the safe. At the end they had to drill it open. We had great food, and great time at the pool and beach, but the room totally dissapointed us

Pool & Beaches Beautiful > Staff lied and intimidated & bullied us into paying for items we should not pay for.

The buffet food presentation was beautiful, but unfortunately the quality and taste did not match. Unless you were willing to wait in line for 30 minutes or more, the food was often cold or underwhelming, which was disappointing for a resort of this level. We also had a very troubling experience on January 4, 2026, at the Marenostrum restaurant. As Primary Level guests, we asked our server which wine options were included. We were directed to a menu that appeared to indicate a half-bottle was included, and at no point were we told there would be an additional charge. When we were leaving, we were suddenly told we owed over 2,700 pesos for the wine, which came as a complete surprise. I disputed the charge and explained that this was never communicated. I provided my room information and said I would address it at check-out the next day. During check-out, the associate agreed it sounded like a miscommunication and said a manager would need to be involved. I was asked to write a report while security reviewed the situation. While I was in the middle of writing the report, a man approached abruptly and demanded immediate payment. He refused to explain why and became intimidating. He insisted I pay and sign on the spot, despite my three young children (all under six) being present. His behavior made me extremely uncomfortable and concerned for my family’s safety. Feeling threatened and wanting to leave without further escalation, I signed the charge. Overall, this experience overshadowed our stay and left us feeling unsettled rather than relaxed. While parts of the resort were enjoyable, the lack of clear communication and the way this situation was handled at check-out are serious concerns that future guests should be aware of.

Expensive beachfront suite with a view of a wall

We were placed in this resort because they oversold were we had reserved. Very expensive bad option. We stayed at a “beachfront” suite with a view of a wall next to a street. Felt scammed. On the first day someone called to offer a membership. When I explained how dissatisfied we were, he told me that if we pay for a membership we were not going to be scammed again. Ha! He tried to scam me again!

Not Happy - Family Split to two hotels

I reserved 2 Ocean Front Premium rooms and one regular in the same hotel for this trip. When we got to the hotel, they changed the 2 Premium rooms to another hotel and left the regular room in the original hotel. They never notified us of the change and now a family of 6 vacation was split to 2 hotels making it a nightmare. Even the hotel staff had no idea what was going on during checkin because nobody notified us or them of the change. The hotel was fully booked due to the holiday so nothing could be changed. I have stayed with this group over 4 times in the past and this never happened.
