Locals will be the first to tell you just how much there is to do in this stunning region of Newfoundland and Labrador. Other than stunning landscapes and plenty of outdoor adventure opportunities, Deer Lake and the surrounding area is also home to some of the region’s best festivals.

The well-known Deer Lake Strawberry Festival is an annual three-day event in late July. Then there is the Trails, Tails and Tunes festival in Norris Point – an event to showcase the province’s incredible talent. Complete with warm smiles and legendary Newfoundland hospitality, you’ll feel like you’re one of the locals while visiting Deer Lake.

Destination Basics

Be charmed by Deer Lake's rugged outdoor landscape. Hiking, walking, boating and freshwater swimming are just a few of the adventures you will find in places like nearby Gros Morne National Park UNESCO World Heritage Site and along the Great Northern Peninsula’s Viking Trail. The Humber River is also renowned for some of the finest wild Atlantic salmon fishing in the world.

In the winter, Deer Lake offers boundless trails across frozen waterways and is considered Newfoundland's primary snowmobiling destination. Nearby, you’ll find Marble Mountain Resort, often referred to as "the best skiing east of the Rockies." Make the short half-hour drive west of town and you’ll soon discover why. Choose from downhill, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and ice climbing, all within easy reach of the resort.

Newfoundland and Labrador has a temperate marine climate, meaning extreme temperatures are rare. The average summer temperature on the island is 16°C (61°F), while in winter it’s around 0°C (32°F).

No matter the time of year, however, you should prepare for cool evenings or sudden dips in temperature – especially if you’re out on the open water. Pack layers and bring warm clothing.
