Mexico

Overview

More destinations. More flights.

Known for its beautiful beaches, selection of resorts, Mayan history and other exciting reasons to visit, Mexico is a Caribbean destination for just about any budget. Explore archeological ruins, go scuba diving and dance all night. The city of Cancun – the Caribbean’s largest tourism centre - has transformed from a relatively deserted island in the 1950s, to a population of over 600,000. With over 250 days of sun per year, millions of tourists flock to its resorts, beaches, restaurants, shopping, nightlife and more, annually.

Just south of Cancun, is the Riviera Maya. Here, you'll find the world's second largest coral reef and more than 200 kilometres (km) of picturesque beach stretching along the Caribbean Sea. But it's the underground caves, eco-parks and archaeological sites filled with ancient Mayan artifacts that make the Riviera Maya so unique, including the well-known El Castillo castle and other ruins.

Located about 19 km off the eastern shoreline of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the island of Cozumel is a relaxed vacation spot perfect for couples and honeymooners looking to escape the spring break crowd. West of Cancun is the city of Merida. This capital of the state of Yucatan showcases traits from its Mayan history. The city is a rich cultural and historical hub, and is a nice laid-back alternative to the action of Cancun.

On the tip of the Baja California peninsula is Los Cabos, where the shimmering blue Sea of Cortez sparkles, surrounded by rugged mountains and desert. This municipality is home to the upscale beach town of Cabo San Lucas, where many Hollywood stars vacation. This is also the location of the famed Cabo Wabo Cantina.

Los Cabos also includes San Jose del Cabo, where you'll find fantastic restaurants and unique art galleries. Explore historic buildings, play a round or two of golf or simply spend the day lounging in the sun.

The designated tourist area of Huatulco is an area made up of several small towns surrounding an ecological reserve on Mexico's south coast.

Mazatlan is located on the mainland directly east of Los Cabos. Mazatlan is an ideal spot to go on a fishing excursion. The historic Old Mazatlan area offers markets, churches and open-air plazas (including the lively Plazuela Machado), where you can learn about the region's history and culture. To the north is New Mazatlan, where you'll find luxury vacation condos, restaurants, resorts and a lovely marina.

The city of Loreto is farther north along the coast and offers a similarly low-key approach to a Mexican vacation. In the southern state of Guerrero, the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo region has become a popular vacation destination. Visit Ixtapa for all-inclusive resorts and beautiful beaches. Or head to Zihuatanejo to take in the area's thriving local culture. You’ll also find plenty of shops and galleries along Zihuatanejo's well-maintained pedestrian walkways.

Manzanillo was a key Latin-American port town for the Spanish and has grown into Mexico's most important commercial seaport. This sunny spot is known for more than business, as it also attracts foodies, beach goers and sports fishers.

Known for its vibrant local community, the city of Puerto Vallarta was recently voted friendliest city in the world by Conde Nast Traveler. Golden beaches like Playa los Muertos sit against a backdrop of mountains. Then there’s Puerto Vallarta, a destination geared to adventure travellers and sun worshippers alike. From December through March, visitors will also have a chance to see humpback whales migrating to the Bay of Banderas.

New to the WestJet network is Mexico City, a large cultural hub including draws like the Teotihuacan Pyramids (Pyramid of the Sun) and the Shrine of Guadalupe. The nickname “the city of palaces” resulted from Spanish and local nobility attempting to outdo each other and build the most extravagant residence. Combined with an elevation of 2,250m the views can quite literally take your breath away.
