Effective February 12, 2020 checked baggage fees will increase for guests that booked a Basic fare going to and from Europe for travel on or after March 31, 2020.
How many bags am I allowed to check?
You are allowed to check 2 to 4 bags on a WestJet flight, except with WestJet Encore, where you are allowed 2 to 3 bags. The number of bags allowed over 2, and baggage fees required, depend on your fare bundle and WestJet Rewards tier benefits.
Only 2 bags are allowed if you’re flying to Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago.
To travel with more than the standard number of bags allowed, you can ship additional luggage through WestJet Cargo.

How much does checked baggage cost?
How much a bag costs, is based on your fare bundle and WestJet Rewards tier.
- 1st bag: $30 - $36
- 2nd bag: $50 - $59
- Excess bags (3rd and 4th bag): $100 - $118
- Oversized baggage (63-80 in. / 158-203 cm): $100 - $118
- Overweight baggage (51-100 lb. / 23-45 kg): $100 - $118
- Handling fee for firearms and sports equipment: $50 - $59
Effective February 12, 2020
If you purchased a Basic fare and are travelling to or from Europe on, or after March 31, 2020, please note the following checked bag fees:
- 1st bag: $60 - $71
- 2nd bag: $90 - $107
Fees are combinable where applicable. For example: if an item is overweight, oversized and is a second item, then all 3 fees apply.
All baggage fees are charged in CAD or USD, depending on your departure country. GST is charged fees for all itineraries that originate in Canada.
When is my baggage fee included?
First bags are included for WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard primary cardholders, EconoFlex, Premium, and Business guests, as well as Silver, Gold, and Platinum Rewards members.
Second bags are included for Premium and Business guests, as well as Silver, Gold, and Platinum Rewards members
Excess bags are included for Platinum Rewards members.

How can I add baggage to my upcoming flight?
You can add baggage to your flight when you check in:
- Online 24 hours before your flight
- At the WestJet customer service desk
- At an airport kiosk
Please note: we do not accept checked baggage fees via our contact centre, or prior to check-in times.
What is the allowed checked baggage size?
The size of checked baggage must be within 157 total cm (62 total in.) and not weighing more than 23 kg (50 lb.).
Oversized luggage exceeds 157 cm (62 in.) in total combined dimension (length + width + height), but less than 203 cm (80 in.).
Overweight luggage exceeds 23 kg (51 lb.), but no more than 45 kg (100 lb.).
Baggage exceeding the accepted number, weight or dimensions must be shipped through WestJet Cargo.

Can I bring a stroller, bassinet or car seat?
Travelling with a child under 2
When you travel with a child on your lap, you can check 2 pieces of infant equipment (e.g. car seat, bassinet or stroller), in addition to your checked baggage allowance, free of charge.
Travelling with a child over 2
A child or infant travelling in a paid seat, you can check one piece of child/infant equipment (e.g. car seat, playpen or stroller), in addition to their checked baggage allowance, free of charge.
Am I eligible for Priority baggage?
Priority baggage means your bags will be tagged so they are among the first to the arrival carousel.
Eligible guests include
- Platinum and Gold members and their travel companions on the same reservation1
- Guests seated in Business or Premium

Is there a fee for a carry on or personal item?
Guests can bring 1 item of carry-on baggage and 1 personal item for no fee on WestJet and WestJet Encore flights, provided they meet the following size requirements:
- Max size for carry-on bag: 53 cm x 23 cm x 38cm (21 in. x 9 in. x 15 in.)
- Max size for personal item: 41 cm x 15 cm x 33 cm (16 in. x 6 in. x 13 in.)

How many carry on bags can I bring on my flight?
Each guest can bring one piece of carry-on luggage and one personal item.
Carry-ons must fit in the overhead bin, for example, a backpack or small suitcase. Smaller, personal items need to fit underneath the seat in front of you, like a purse, sports ball or laptop.
In addition to the carry-on baggage allowance, other items are also allowed in the cabin, regarding they can be properly stowed. For more information, and to view a full list of items that are accepted, see additional items.
What is the maximum size of my carry on and personal items?
Your carry-on and personal items should not exceed the following size restrictions:
- Carry-on bag: 53 cm x 23 cm x 38cm (21 in. x 9 in. x 15 in.)

Do I need to add a carry on or personal item to my reservation?
No, WestJet and WestJet Encore do not require this information prior to your flight departure.
Does my diaper bag count as carry on baggage?
In a word: no. Guests can bring a diaper bag in addition to the 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item allowed, as long as it contains items for an infant only. See additional items See additional items
What are the baggage guidelines if I am travelling on an airline partner?
Please be sure to check in with the airline that is operating your flight; or if you have connecting flights, the airline that is operating the first portion.
