What does annual qualifying flight spend mean?
Annual qualifying flight spend is the amount spent on published base fares for WestJet-marketed flights flown during a 12-month period, known as your qualifying year. WestJet Vacations spend, partner-marketed flights, partner bookings made on westjet.com, taxes, fees, charges and any portion of the base fare paid with WestJet dollars (including on Member Exclusive fares) are excluded from annual qualifying flight spend
What is my qualifying year?
Your qualifying year is a 12-month period based on your date of enrolment. Your first qualifying year begins on the date that you enrol and ends on the last day of the month, one year from the date that you enrolled. For example, if you enrol on November 15, 2017, your first qualifying year will be November 15, 2017 to November 30, 2018. Each subsequent qualifying year will then be a 12-month period, i.e., December 1 to November 30.
Is the tracking of my annual qualifying flight spend based on the date of purchase or the date of the flight?
Annual qualifying flight spend is based on the dates your flights are flown. For example, if your qualifying year is the 12-month period of December 1 to November 30, your qualifying flight spend will be tracked based on flights flown during that period.
How do I make a booking using my WestJet Rewards ID?
When booking a flight on westjet.com select 'Sign in' located at the top of the page and sign into your WestJet Rewards account using your 9-digit WestJet Rewards ID or email address and password, then select 'Book a flight'. With this one quick extra step our system will auto-populate your guest details, including your WestJet Rewards ID, into the booking. If you have not signed in, you will need to manually add your WestJet Rewards ID on the Guest details page to earn WestJet dollars once your flight has been flown. When booking a WestJet Vacations package, enter your 9-digit WestJet Rewards ID in the member number field, found on the Payment screen.
How much is a WestJet dollar worth?

What qualifies as a WestJet-marketed flight?
A WestJet-marketed flight is any flight that has a WS carrier code preceding the flight number (eg. WS 656, WS 3109, WS 5010). The flight may be operated by WestJet, WestJet Encore or a partner airline. Regardless of which carrier operates it, if the flight number starts with WS you are eligible to earn WestJet dollars on that flight.
Do WestJet dollars expire?
WestJet dollars that are earned but not used during your qualifying year will be banked into your WestJet dollars account for future use. These dollars expire after a period of five (5) years. The expiry date is set to coincide with the end date of your qualifying year. For example, if you earned WestJet dollars in your qualifying year of November 1, 2014 – October 31, 2015, those WestJet dollars will expire on October 31, 2020. You can choose to extend the expiration date of your WestJet dollars for one year for a fee of $50-$57.50. WestJet dollars awarded in connection with a contest or promotion may have expiry dates that vary from the above. Any such information will be specified as part of the contest or promotion rules.
What can I earn each year when I fly with WestJet?
Earn rates and flight benefits are determined your WestJet Rewards tier at the time travel is completed. There are three tiers in the WestJet Rewards program:
As a new member, you’ll start in the Teal tier. Starting with your first dollar and up to $2,999 in qualifying flight spend in your qualifying year, you will earn WestJet dollars at a rate of 1 per cent back on WestJet flights and 0.5 per cent back on WestJet Vacations packages.
Once you reach $3,000 in qualifying flight spend in your qualifying year, you’ll move up to the Silver tier with earn rates of 3 per cent back on WestJet flights and 1 per cent back on WestJet Vacations packages as long as you continue to maintain Silver status. You’ll also receive Silver flight benefits, including your first checked bag free, four airport lounge vouchers and four advance seat selection vouchers.
At $6,000 in qualifying flight spend in your qualifying year, you’ll move up to the Gold tier with earn rates of 5 per cent back on WestJet flights and 1 per cent back on WestJet Vacations packages as long as you continue to maintain Gold status. You’ll also receive Gold flight benefits, which include your first and second checked bags free, advance boarding (Zone 1), no fee for same-day flight changes at check-in, ten airport lounge vouchers, four advance seat selection vouchers, as well as priority security screening (at select airports) and access to a Gold priority support number.
Milestone awards are tied to your qualifying flight spend in any given qualifying year and are awarded only once the spend requirements are achieved, regardless of your tier status. The first milestone award, a Canada-wide companion voucher, is awarded with $4,000 of qualifying flight spend. WestJet-wide companion vouchers are awarded at $6,000 in qualifying flight spend and again at $10,000 and each increment of $5,000 in flight spend thereafter.
More information on WestJet Rewards tiers can be found here.
Can I earn WestJet dollars on flights and vacation packages booked online at westjet.com as well as through WestJet's contact centre?
Yes. WestJet makes it easy for you to earn WestJet dollars on your flights and vacation packages, regardless of how you book. You can earn WestJet dollars on reservations made on our website at westjet.com or by calling us at 1-888-937-8538 (1-888-WESTJET). You can also earn WestJet dollars on reservations made by a travel agent. Some fare restrictions apply; please see published fares below.
What is a published fare, and can I earn WestJet dollars on all fares?
A published fare is one that is publicly available to all guests at westjet.com, such as Econo, Flex or Plus fares. Certain fares, such as Member Exclusive fares (which are 100% WestJet dollar redemption fares and not available to all guests) and unpublished contracted fares made available to online travel agencies, for example, may not be eligible for earning.
Do I need to purchase my flights and vacations directly from WestJet in order to earn WestJet dollars?
No. You are eligible to earn WestJet dollars as long as your 9-digit WestJet Rewards ID (also known as your Frequent Flyer Number) has been added to your booking prior to departure. This includes bookings made through a travel agent or through a Global Distribution System (GDS). As long as you are purchasing a published fare (Econo, Flex or Plus) that is also publicly available on westjet.com, you will earn WestJet dollars. You will not earn WestJet dollars on unpublished fares (ie. contracted fares not publicly available at westjet.com).
How do I earn on WestJet Vacations packages?
It's simple. Just add your 9-digit WestJet Rewards ID to the member number field when booking a WestJet Vacations package on westjet.com, or provide it to a vacations specialist or travel agent to add to your booking. WestJet Vacations spend will be awarded to your account at the rate of 0.5 per cent of your individual portion of the eligible spend of the package (or 1 per cent if you have Silver or Gold status at the time of travel). Eligible spend on a WestJet Vacations package includes base airfare, hotel, attractions, transfers and/or meal plans, but excludes all taxes, fees and other charges. WestJet dollars are not awarded on WestJet Vacations group bookings.
Can I earn WestJet dollars on flights that I have booked for others?
No. WestJet Rewards is an individual traveller program. Eligible spend will only be applied to the account belonging to the person whose name and WestJet Rewards ID matches those appearing on the booking. This also applies for bookings made for children. To earn WestJet dollars, each individual traveller must join WestJet Rewards and have their own WestJet Rewards ID.
Are there any other ways that I can earn WestJet dollars?
Yes. WestJet dollars can also be earned through the WestJet RBC® MasterCard‡. This is a great way for anyone to earn WestJet dollars, regardless of how often they fly with WestJet. If you are a WestJet Rewards member, you can accelerate your earning through everyday spending on the WestJet RBC MasterCard. For more information visit westjet.com/creditcard. Additionally, you can also earn WestJet dollars on car rentals, hotel stays and travel insurance, as well as through our partner airlines. For more information visit our partners.
I am a WestJet Rewards member and forgot to enter my WestJet Rewards ID. Can I still get WestJet dollar credit after the flight has been flown?
Yes. You are eligible to receive credit as long as you were a member at the time the flight was flown and you submit the request within 12 months of your flight date. All missing rewards requests must be submitted using the online form available when you sign into your account. When submitting the form please be sure to complete all fields, including the airline ticket number. Please allow up to 30 days for processing. It is highly recommended that you keep your boarding passes, as they are the best source for the information you'll need to submit a missing rewards request.
Can I earn WestJet dollars with other airlines?
Yes. As WestJet continues to expand its interline and code-share partnerships, reciprocal frequent flyer agreements with select airlines will be introduced. These partnerships give WestJet Rewards members greater opportunity to earn WestJet dollars, particularly on routes that WestJet does not operate. To view our current airline partners, along with details on how to earn WestJet dollars, please see Our partners.
If I purchase flights marketed by a partner airline, will they count towards my annual qualifying flight spend?
No. Only flights marketed by WestJet are eligible. Partner-marketed flights do not count towards your annual qualifying flight spend, however, they provide you with a great way to add more WestJet dollars to your account, particularly when your travel plans take you outside WestJet's network. WestJet dollars awarded on partner-marketed flights are based on distance flown, instead of amount spent, plus class of services bonuses, when applicable. To learn more about earning WestJet dollars with our airline partners, please see Our partners.
Are there any other ways to increase my WestJet dollars?
Yes. If you are a member of the RBC Rewards program or are an eligible RBC banking account holder who earns RBC Rewards points you can convert your points to WestJet dollars. Visit rbcrewards.com to learn more.

Please be sure to sign in and review your WestJet Rewards account on a regular basis, so that you're aware of the status of your voucher(s). If you are a WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard cardholder and you receive an annual companion voucher, you may be notified by email 4 to 6 weeks after your first card purchase, or upon card renewal date each year thereafter.
What are flight benefits?
Flight benefits are a set of travel privileges awarded to you as a result of achieving the Silver or Gold tiers in your qualifying year. Flight benefits vary by tier and may include the waiving of fees for products and services, such as checked baggage and advance seat selection, and access to airport conveniences, such as priority security screening and advance boarding, when travelling on WestJet-marketed and operated flights. Full details on the flight benefits awarded in each tier can be found here.
If I achieve Silver or Gold, how long do I get to keep my flight benefits?
Once you achieve Silver or Gold, you'll get to keep your flight benefits for the remainder of your current qualifying year until the end of your next qualifying year. The ability to keep your Silver or Gold tier and benefits in future years is based on your total qualifying flight spend in the second year and each year following. Exceptions to the validity period may apply when flight benefits are awarded on a promotional basis.
When were the changes for 2017 announced?
An email was sent on December 1, 2016 to all members who are subscribed to WestJet Rewards account updates.
When will the new tier changes take effect?
The updates to tiers and earn rates will come into effect on February 6, 2017.
What's changing from the current tier structure?
There will continue to be three tiers - Teal, Silver and Gold – which come with a variety awards and benefits, based on how much you spend on WestJet flights in your individual qualifying year.
With the new tier structure, we're making it simpler to understand how you'll earn WestJet dollars on WestJet flights and vacation packages by directly tying your earn rates to your tier status at time of flight date, rather than how much you've spent to date on WestJet flights in your qualifying year. For example, if you're in the Gold tier as of February 6, 2017, going forward you'll immediately begin earning 5% back in WestJet dollars on any future WestJet flights flown as long as you continue to maintain Gold status. No more resetting to 1% at the beginning of each new qualifying year and laddering up to 3% and 5% as your spend increases. With the new structure, effective on February 6, 2017:
- Teal members will earn 1% back on future flights flown and 0.5% back on future vacation packages
- Silver members will earn 3% back on future flights flown and 1% back on future vacation packages
- Gold members will earn 5% back on future flights flown and 1% back on future vacation packages
To maintain your status beyond your initial tier end date, you'll need to continue to fly with us to meet the qualifying flight spend requirement for each tier but as long as you maintain that status, you'll continue to enjoy the earn rates associated to your tier.
The Teal tier is being simplified and the top end reduced to $2,999. The two different spend levels within Teal are being removed and the milestone bonus at $1,500 will no longer be awarded. With a simplified structure for Teal, there will be one set of earn rates on flights and vacation packages for all qualifying flight spend up to $2,999.
The Silver tier will now start at $3,000 in annual qualifying flight spend – $1,000 less than the previous requirement. With this change, it will be easier than ever for members to receive flight benefits such as first checked bag free, lounge passes and advance seat selection.
The Gold tier will continue to start at $6,000, with members enjoying all of the fantastic flight benefits that they do today. Members with Gold status can now also take advantage of a new priority support number, available exclusively through the WestJet app.
What's not changing?
The awarding of companion flights will continue to be directly tied to your qualifying flight spend in any given year and awarded at the same spend thresholds as today. Companion flights are not tied to tier status; you must earn these awards by reaching the specific spend milestone.
- At $4,000 in qualifying flight spend in your individual qualifying year, you'll receive a Canada-wide companion voucher, valid for travel anywhere we fly in Canada.
- At $6,000, $10,000 and every $5,000 in qualifying flight spend beyond you'll receive a WestJet-wide companion voucher, valid for travel anywhere we fly in North America, Central America, the Caribbean or Europe.
How do these changes impact the benefits I receive with my WestJet RBC® World Elite MasterCard‡?
They don't. As a primary cardholder of the WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard, you'll continue to receive the same benefits you do today. Our WestJet RBC World Elite MasterCard is offered to any member, regardless of tier status, and comes with its own unique benefits. As a primary cardholder you'll continue to enjoy an annual round-trip companion voucher starting at $99 (plus taxes, fees and charges), along with a free first checked bag for you and up to eight additional guests on the same reservation. You'll also be eligible to earn 1.5% on everyday purchases and 2% on WestJet purchases when you use your card. And don't forget, that’s on top of what you receive when booking with WestJet as a Teal, Silver or Gold member.
What's the difference between earn rates, flight benefits and milestone awards?
With the program changes being introduced in 2017, earn rates and flight benefits will always be tied to your tier status at the time of travel. For example, as soon as you achieve Gold status and for as long as you maintain it you’ll enjoy 5% back in WestJet dollars on all future WestJet flights, 1% back on future WestJet Vacation packages and a robust set of flight benefits, such as advance boarding, whenever you fly with us.
Milestone awards will continue to be tied to your qualifying flight spend in any given qualifying year, the same as today. Think of it as a gift for achieving a spend milestone in your qualifying year. The more you fly with us, the more gifts you’ll receive.
How will I know which tier I am in after the program changes take effect?
If you're a current WestJet Rewards member, you'll be able to see which tier you're in when you sign in to your account at westjet.com or on the WestJet app any time after February 6, 2017. Members subscribed to account updates may also be contacted by email. Teal members will be automatically placed into a tier based on their qualifying flight spend on February 6, 2017. For example, members who are Teal today but have $3,000 in spend as of February 6, 2017 will automatically be placed into Silver. Members with current Silver or Gold status on February 6, 2017 will maintain their status until their scheduled tier end date, regardless of qualifying flight spend at that time.
Will I start earning at the new rates immediately as of February 6?
Yes, with two exceptions. To show our appreciation to our valued members and transition them into the new earn rate structure, we will be temporarily honouring the higher earn rates on WestJet flights for members enrolled in the program prior to February 6, as follows:
- Effective February 6, 2017 and until January 31, 2018 Teal members with qualifying flight spend between $1,500 and $2,999 will receive 3% earn on that portion of spend, which is the earn rate they would have received had the change not occurred.
- Effective February 6, 2017 and until January 31, 2018 Silver members with qualifying flight spend between $4,000 and $5,999 will receive 5% earn on that portion of spend for their current qualifying year, which is the earn rate they would have received had the change not occurred. Silver members who requalify for Silver when their qualifying year ends will automatically earn the constant 3% under the new program rules instead of the 1% they would have previously started with had the change not occurred.
Members who enrol any time after changes come into effect on February 6, 2017 will be immediately subject to the earn rates.
If I achieve Silver or Gold, how long do I get to keep my tier and associated earn rate and flight benefits?
Once you achieve Silver or Gold, you’ll enjoy your earn rates and flight benefits for the remainder of your current qualifying year and the entire next qualifying year. Unless of course you achieve a higher tier, in which case you'll enjoy that higher tier's benefits. The ability to keep your Silver or Gold tier and benefits in future years is always based on your total qualifying flight spend in each successive qualifying year.
Will I be earning less as a Silver member?
Actually, you'll be earning more. If you're a Silver member the 5% that you see on the current tier chart is only applicable on the portion of your spend above $4,000. But with the new structure you'll be earning at a constant earn rate on all spend as long you're Silver. Need to see it to believe it? Let's say that you are a Silver member today and have $4,500 in qualifying flight spend. You would earn the following:
Current tier structure
$4,500 in WestJet flight spend
WestJet dollars (WSD)
The first $1,500
Portion between $1,500 and $3,999
Portion over $4,000
Total 115 WSD
Avg. earn rate of 2.5%
With the new structure, you’ll always earn 3% back, starting with your first dollar, when you hold Silver status at the time the flights are flown. In this case, three really is better than five.
Under new tier structure
$4,500 in WestJet flight spend
WestJet dollars (WSD)
Full amount of $4,500
Total 135 WSD
Constant earn rate of 3%
