Quiet luxury

drusdestiny on Jul 09, 2024

The little touches of personalized yet extremely attentive service at Matachica sets this place apart from all the big name hotels. They sent a house car to pick us up, which is entirely different than having an unmarked taxi contracted with the big name hotel. During the 35 min ride from Tropic Air, our driver asked us for our welcome drink order, which is anything they have at the bar. And throughout our short stay, every staff member we encountered seemed to know which room we were in. As we were heading out for the day, the front desk ran up to us to inform us of the evacuation accommodations due to the impending hurricane. We never would have stopped at the desk otherwise. Lastly, I am extremely grateful that Matachica is still under the Hyatt umbrella as a Mr & Mrs Smith property with the ending of the partnership with SLH. This allowed me to book using the Hyatt app and also allows for points redemption if one desires. Hyatt Globalist breakfast benefits were excellent per usual and absolutely appreciated not having to sign off on a check. The upgrade from the garden view to the ocean view was a huge bonus as we essentially had direct access to the beach.

We loved Matachica!

Sara N on Jun 26, 2024

We had a great stay at Matachica Resort! The staff were welcoming of our large couples/birthday group and provided exceptional service. We all loved having our own fruit-named casitas too! The resort has a relaxing feel, the grounds are well kept, and the pool atmosphere is lovely..not to mention the tree bar cocktails. We enjoyed the restaurant menu and wine selection too. If you want to snorkel, sight see and visit Caye Caulker, book a day tour through the resort. Job and Charlie were fun hosts and showed us a great time! I highly recommend staying at Matachica if you're visiting Ambergris Caye. Thank you for everything! -Team Apricot

Wonderful trip to Matachica!

Djrowr on Jun 01, 2024

My boyfriend and I stayed at Matachica in April 2024 and absolutely loved it. Here are a few key takeaways from our trip… - Sargassum: I spent a lot of time worried about the sargassum based on some of the other reviews. During our stay it really was not an issue at all, the staff at the hotel do an incredible job cleaning up the beach every morning/throughout the day. Most of our stay was very windy which helped with the heat, and ensured you couldn’t smell the sargassum (we had a seafront casita as well). - Scuba: We did 2 days of reef diving coordinated through the hotel and enjoyed that the dives were all so close to shore (~max 10min boat ride from the scuba shop), it meant we had a full day of diving and still were back to the hotel by 1 or 2pm. - Restaurants: As other guests mentioned, both restaurants on the property make amazing meals! We ate all of our meals there and enjoyed them all! It would be a bit of a challenge to eat dinner anywhere but the hotel given the lack of road infrastructure in the area. - Booking during the shoulder season: on one hand going in April was wonderful, the hotel was at most at 50% capacity. We could always find a seat at the bar, or walk into either of the restaurants on the property w/o reservations. We ended up with a few weather delays that caused our water activities to be rescheduled, and luckily Matachica and the scuba place were able to accommodate us. We were also able to still get in at the spa for massages at the last minute on days where it was too windy to be out on the water (the spa is wonderful!). The only downside was that many of the activities that required a minimum amount of people were not happening due to the lack of people interested (e.g., we hoped to do the chef’s dinner but not enough guests registered, probably bc it seemed like there were barely 10 guests on the property!) Things I would recommend to future guests: - If I could rebook our trip again, I would have split our time between the Gaia riverlodge first and then gone to Matachica. We met several people who did this while we were staying at Matachica and it seemed amazing (plus, perhaps I’m just not a beach person, but a few days at the beach is enough for me). - Book all activities/ excursions that you want to do earlier in your trip just in case you end up with weather delays. - Book the half day boat rental for the afternoon! We caught fresh fish Mambo cooked for us for dinner, snorkeled Mexico Rocks just before sunset, and ended the excursion watching the sun go down with a bottle of rose and ceviche out in the boat! - Rent a golf cart for the day and go to secret beach for sunset - we thought we would ride bikes there but the front desk advised against it given the roads are all dirt/exposed. We ended up happy with our decision to rent a golf cart because it allowed us to stay for sunset and drive back in the dark (the carts have lights) - and after seeing the roads could agree with the hotel staff, it would’ve been a hot bike ride. I’d recommend going to Wet ‘n Wild at the end of the beach, it was quieter and they had a tiki bar out in the ocean! Note: Matachica does not have golf carts for rental, they will provide a list of vendors that you can contact - most of which were very responsive (we booked day of). I only have two suggestions for improvement for Matachica… - update the excursion sheet with their current offerings, we found a few things that were discontinued/no longer offered that surprised us (e.g., golf carts, no manicures/pedicures, etc). Certainly not a big deal, but I would’ve gotten a pedicure before I left had I known! - Provide tower fans for the casitas upon request. We had several extremely warm nights in our room and the AC and overhead fan were not enough / didn’t cover the side of the casita where the bed was located. An extra fan in the room would’ve helped quite a bit! Finally, the staff at Matachica was phenomenal! Special shout out to Lance the bartender, who dazzled us with new lime-art creations that adorned our cocktails all week. We loved hanging out at Danny’s Bar, playing games on the hotel’s backgammon set, and napping in the cabanas on the pier. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

AMAZING Resort in San Pedro!

Maria A on May 30, 2024

We just returned from our group trip to Matachica and could say it was the most amazing trip! From setting up everything before going Almira was amazing to deal with and made sure to set our group with everything we needed. We had two birthdays in the group and they went out of their way to decorate the rooms and provide bubbles. It was such a nice way to be welcomed! The staff were phenomenal and so kind and great to us! The food was the best on the island - from breakfast to dinner! Dreaming of the food still.... Take advantage of their tours! The guides are great and they make sure you have a great time. We did the Day Tour at Hol Chan and Caye Cauker and we all were so blown away as we felt we did so much in so little time! The rooms are cute and colored based on the fruit name of your casita so its unique and different. We hope to be back again! Team Dragonfruit!

Barefoot luxury that feels better than home

Hack820 (Oxford, Mississippi) on May 28, 2024

TL; DR: great barefoot luxury spot for chilling out off the grid for a while. She wanted luxury, beachfront, great food with a spa. He wanted laid back, socially responsible and freedom from tepid buffets and forced conga lines. Both were pleased. We chose Matachica to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. From the start, the staff were focused on helping us make the most of a week-long stay. What makes this place special: its people. Staff are kind, considerate, local and proud to share the beauty and authenticity of their culture’s hospitality. You only need look like you need something and someone is there, happy to help. Logistics: It’s seamless flying from BZE to San Pedro - we used Tropic Air. They fly the venerable Cessna Caravan aircraft, which makes for a smooth and comfortable short flight (15 mins) to the island. Just off baggage claim in San Pedro, a staff member met us with a golf cart to collect our bags and take us to the dock, about a 10-minute ride through town. We boarded Matachica’s boat with our luggage, and were asked our order for a welcome cocktail. The boat ride took about 15 minutes. Staff were waiting for us on the dock, with the cocktails and Taco, the amicable resort dog who is clearly loved by all. Return travel was by van, featuring good A/C and a painless transfer. Special celebration: Staff really went out of their way to help us celebrate. From keeping our vow renewal a surprise for her, to organizing our minister and photographer, to our pier dinner - everything was handled with great care. This is an excellent place for any celebration with capable and eager collaborators. Food: we stayed on site the whole week and never tired of the food. We were happy with the full breakfast plan, opting for a couple of midday snacks as the spirit moved. Dinner in the bistro was our norm, saving the higher-end Mambo menu for a couple of splurge nights. Both menus have good options for a variety of diets. Don’t miss Taco Tuesday, and go for the birria - delish. Lime in the Coconut and the Grilled Pineapple pina colada were favorites, and the wine list is great. Accommodation: we loved staying in a luxury suite with a private hot tub. A hammock on the front porch beckoned as much as the gentle waves lapping the shoreline just a few feet away. The temp was heating up to June’s rainy season during our May stay, making our unit’s three mini-split a/c units really work hard. It was sometimes warm in our casita but we managed to get things cooler most nights for bed. Thatched roofs are great for aesthetics but lousy at energy efficiency. The small hot water heater meant the soaking tub couldn’t be filled quite full, but was pleasant to use nonetheless. Amenities: Danny’s Tree Bar is a great mid-day anchor to lounging by the pool. Great cocktails, attentive staff and a nice hot-tub/infinity pool setup make it a relaxing way to spend the day. Our sunset snorkel trip was a highlight. The best part? Getting to know staffers Lucas and Job better as they showed us their favorite spot to watch a sunset. Spa experience was good, too. We enjoyed a great couple’s massage as part of the romance package. Beach: like many caribbean beaches, this one suffers the scourge of sargassum. The staff work hard to keep it cleared but the shoreline water is brown instead of the magnificent coral blue that just touches the end of the pier. I still swam in the sea, no problems. All in all- this is a great option if you want barefoot luxury in a resort that celebrates local culture and people. Bear in mind some tips are included in each tab or bill. However, staff go out of their way to care and I always wanted to tip beyond the standard. The people make an already beautiful place even lovelier. Protip: I wish I had brought more cash for tips; there isn’t an ATM on site. Also, don’t feel like you must rent a golf cart and venture out: we were content to enjoy seven days of idle and idyllic bliss.
