It' Okay -- sadly it used to be Exceptional

rafgram1 (Oxnard, California) on May 25, 2024

Having stayed here just about every year since it first opened -- this place is on its way down. The rooms need a refresh - the beds are so hard it hurts, there are mold/scuff marks on the hallways -- the rooms have a moldy aroma. The most disappointing thing is the food quality. The quality here used to be superb. I used to order buffalo wings and parrilladas with pulpo, costillas de rez an assortment of great tasting items. Those are gone today. The pool menu selection is dismal and quality disappoints. Bring back the buffalo wings! I also feel that the pool area is selling too many day passes to non hotel guest -- which means as hotel guest -- all the lounge chairs are taken by the time I get up there. The mirrors in our room are showing a lot of wear for the short time its been opened. Is it the proximity to the ocean that wears these buildings down? In any event - the hotel should replace those items as it gives off a sense that things are looking run down. I also heard of hotel guest checking in and opting to leave the next day to another hotel because of the room standards. As this is a HILTON CURIO hotel -- we expect certain standards to be met -- and for a CURIO -- this is not cutting it. The property needs to keep up - I can't see this being a CURIO for too long. However - I want to add that certain staff made our stay enjoyable. Thanks to Irving for EXCELLENT service in breakfast in the morning.. And -- Arturo at the pool in the afternoons also gives great service. Also Diana was very attentive.

Not big on customer service

Song Z on May 25, 2024

My partner and I stayed earlier this month for two nights during our anniversary, and we really wanted to like this hotel. Sadly, it was quite disappointing and the staff/management really didn't seem to be interested in customer service. This showed with the attitudes of the staff and the penny pinching the management employed. To start, check-in was fine with a couple wrinkles. No upgrade despite my Hilton gold status, because-despite booking directly with the hotel-we booked on a site that supposedly means they don't need to honor member benefits. Furthermore, no acknowledgement of our anniversary, despite contacting the hotel beforehand. The room was basic, but we quickly saw the grubbyness of this hotel the next morning. We signed for our free breakfast buffet(included in the room rate), and started to enjoy ourselves. We noticed staff cooking bacon and made to order eggs behind the buffet heaters of cold eggs and stale waffles and looked for someone to order the good stuff. Silly of us to expect that to be included, as any protein was an extra 75 pesos charge for a small portion. Considering the listed price for the buffet was 350 pesos (22$USD), we were put off by the fact that the breakfast buffet amounted to such a paltry selection. We eventually supplemented our breakfast elsewhere and enjoyed the town, but the real trouble came that night. We called the front desk to ask for late checkout, and they didn't pick up (I don't believe I've stayed somewhere where the front desk just didn't pick up as much as at the Fives). When we went downstairs after dinner(at the surprisingly decent rooftop restaurant), we asked in person for late checkout. Hilton Gold members are entitled to a 2pm late checkout, but the front desk person said that they would only be able to do 1pm. Here comes the honoring status issue again with a fun twist. The front desk associate then asks his manager if he can do 2pm, but the manager comes and tells us he can only do noon! This is despite the fact that we were already informed they could give us a 1pm checkout. Not really customer friendly to go back on the word of your staff. Finally to top it off, when we went upstairs to order a drink, their bar was slicked with varnish, staining our clothes when we approached to order. The staff was not apologetic at all, pointing to a sign several feet away, that noted "improvements" in progress. Typically you would cordon off areas with fresh paint or the like, not rely on a vague sign and bad lighting. Our last morning, we decided to leave early Some additional annoyances we had are that the elevators were extremely slow and the rooftop music would wake us up at 7am. These issues, the general lack of care from the staff, and obvious policy issues/rip-offs from management showed how the Fives was not a place interested in providing customer service. Our recommendation is to find a better place to enjoy your vacation, because you likely won't be able to here.
