Beautiful place loved the beach but super expensive resort and the room smelled like mold

Stayed at the Royal Atlantis ! A beautiful resort and high end but way too over priced. The room smelled like mold and we had a balcony water view room. I loved the slides and swimming with the dolphins! The Bahamas was beautiful! Loved the beach and had a great time!

We very likely will not return to Atlantis and we do not recommend this resort.

Pros: The landscaping was lush and the wildlife was nice for toddlers. Picturesque property and backdrops. Most servers and staff were friendly, with the exception of the experience below (see paragraph of 11 in "Cons"). Our server at Amber was expectational. I cannot remember his official name, but he joked with us to call him "Baby Shaq," since he was rather tall, but smaller than Shaquille O'Neal. The food at Carmine's was tasty and a good value for the money. The kids had a fun time at the AKA Kids Club for the "Late Night Adventure." Our daughter always had nice things to say about the activity and/or movie and had a different little craft that she made each night when we picked her up. Staff seemed friendly and engaging with the kids when we dropped off at 6pm. Husbands enjoyed the casino games. Luxury shopping options were decent. Rolex received a shipment during our stay with quite a few models available for sale. Sadly, none of the available watches sparked our fancy, but we liked seeing options for purchase available (opposed to exhibition only). Cons: 1. Upon checking in we were asked if we wanted "an upgrade with an ocean view." Rather, this said upgrade was a downgrade. We were on the 4th floor and had a view of the people walking out from the hotel. We could not see any water whatsoever, as the trees obstructed any views. This room could possibly be described as "facing the ocean, but with no ocean view," but absolutely not "ocean view." This was completely misleading and had we known, we would not have taken the "upgrade," as our room was unacceptable (see below). 2. The toilet did not flush, so maintenance had to be called to fixed. He did promptly come to repair, but the toilet lever still had to be held down continually for 3-5 seconds in order for the toilet to properly flush. 3. The bathtub had cracks/chips on the tub floor along with brown stains. Thus, I did not feel it was appropriate to give my toddler a bath. 4. The shower head did not function properly, as water mostly would come from the bathtub faucet and trickle out of the shower head. 5. When taking a shower, the tub would not drain. After approximately 8 minutes with the water running, the tub would be completely full, on the brink of water overflowing onto the bathroom floor. So, I would have to turn off the water midway through my shower to shave and wash my body with bath water up my legs. After the tub water slightly drained, I was able to turn the water back on to rinse off. It was not an ideal way to take a shower for 5 nights. 6. The carpets were repulsively dirty. I have honestly never encountered more disgusting carpets in a hotel before. There were no hotel slippers in the room, so I had to wear the same pair of socks the entire stay (as I had only brought 2 pairs of socks and wanted to save the other pair of socks to be fresh and clean when we traveled back home). I had to throw these socks away because they were so filthy after walking around on this carpet for 5 days. If I had to guess, it looked as if there was 20+ years of bodily fluids and other spills that have never (or very seldomly) been cleaned. 7. We asked if we could switch rooms, but the front desk stated there was absolutely nothing available until 2 days later. Since it would be more of a hassle to unpack for 2 nights to pack up 2 days later, move rooms for 3 nights to unpack again and re-pack to leave for home, we opted to stay in the current, unsatisfactory room. 8. The hallway smelled of mold. 9. The first evening, our 3 year old daughter begun vomiting in the middle of the night, followed shortly by diarrhea. The vomiting & diarrhea persisted from 2am until we woke up, around 8am. 10. I (adult female) had diarrhea beginning the third night of our stay, which persisted the entire trip and continued until a few days after we got back home. 11. We had lunch at Cocodrilo one day. We had 3 kids with us (5 years old, 3 years old and 10 months old), who should have eaten for free. When we placed our order, we told the server we would get 1 kids quesadilla for 2 of the kids to share. THE SERVER SUGGESTED MANY TIMES that we should order the adult quesadilla for them to share instead, since it was a larger portion. Thus, we ordered 1 adult quesadilla and no kids meals, based solely off the servers persistent suggestion. When the food came, he still accidentally brought out both the kids and adult quesadillas. When we pointed that out, he said oops and just left them both at our table. Our party consumed part of the adult quesadilla, as it was left there and we thought the server would handle his error. Rather, when the bill came he said "since we consumed it, we have to pay for it." Then he went on to say that kids eat free anyway, so it's no big deal. If we had known kids ate for free at this restaurant, we would not have taken his suggestion to pay an additional price for the adult entree, but rather would have gotten 3 kids meals. The server was rude and did not want to fix his issue. The manager then came out and also did not want to fix it. We then had to ask for the "higher up" manager to come out. After 15+ minutes of explaining we're even in this dilemma because of the servers idiotic suggestion, they finally removed the adult quesadilla from the bill. 12. On the website, it is stated that the pool water is "heated to 80 degrees." I do not find that to be a true statement, as our kids could not be in the water for more than a few minutes before their lips turned blue and they were shivering/begging to get out of the water. The whole reason we came to Atlantis in the first place was for the Poseidon kids water area. The kids were not able to enjoy this amenity whatsoever due to the water temperatures. I was unable to get in the water at all, other than just standing up to my ankles for a few minutes, because it was far too cold for a warm-blooded human.
