Dinner Theatre and Hotel --- Tourist in our own city

We went for the Dinner Theatre and a night in the hotel. Tourists in our own city! Room 2803, a King Suite, 8th floor looking west. CAD $215 for the night if booked separately . We booked it as part of a package with the Dinner Theatre. The suite could theoretically sleep four, two on the king bed and two (smaller people!) on the pull out bed / sofa in the "sitting room" part. Our suite might once have been a wheelchair accessible room with wide clearances in the bathroom and wide doors (no assist bars by the toilet or tub however?). The king suite is essentially two single rooms with a couple of doorways between them: a bedroom no more than big enough for the king bed and a dresser, and a sitting room with the sofa-bed, clothes closet, desk and chair. In between the two is a "bar" area with the coffee maker and fridge. No microwave although I'm sure they would bring one if requested. There are two TV's. Noise was non existent up on the eighth floor and with non-opening windows. Fortunately the scores of youth hockey players and their parents, staying there for a tournament, weren't audible to us! Mattress was comfortable and the pillows weren't wimpy. For climate control to help us sleep, the HVAC system while slow to respond did eventually get down to a cool temperature. We didn't find a way to make the fan run at a slow continuous rate. The windows don't open. The suite, like the rest of the hotel, had no evidence at all of being in a 40+ year old building. Bath was quite modern: looked like it had been totally renovated in the last few years (low flush toilet). No bath tub! It looked like there had once been one, but it had been converted into a shower. The coffee machine was stocked with decaf', hooray. But no tea. Thankfully they had retrofitted desk lamps with plug-ins for laptop chargers and USB's. Bar fridge was quiet. Housekeeping was up to snuff with no dust bunnies detected. Overall the building, while quite old (40 plus years?), looked in good shape. Carpet, walls and ceilings in the halls and public areas had none of the stale "old hotel" smell and look to them. The emergency exit stairwells (good for walking off the big buffet dinner) were free of junk and cigarette butts / smell. We didn't try the swimming pool. And what's this, no hot tub?! Booking and checking-in were problematic. We contacted them to try to change our reservation about a week before our stay, and ran in to a huge bureaucratic nightmare. They use Hilton's master global reservation system and it's not user friendly. Not for us, not for the front desk employees. Word to the wise: when booking, call the local 780 number, not the Hilton global call centre. The dinner theatre, "Vegas Live", was about what we've come to expect from the Mayfield Dinner Theatre. Very good acting and musicianship; mostly tunes that would be playing at a Vegas show. We were left a little cold by the theme and the repertoire, which weren't quite in the same genre as their usual tribute show (e.g. Roy Orbison, Everly Bros.) The dinner theatre buffet was, as always, to die for. No signs of issues or cutbacks due to COVID or supply chain. Breakfast was a very pleasant surprise: a really big, well stocked buffet with a huge assortment of hot and cold food.

Great Accomodation

Great hotel - rooms were clean and adequate and the front staff were great. We had supper there - the Alberta beef was great as was the breakfast. Pity that we stayed overnight only as we were leaving the following day.

Needs some love, horrible beds

The staff here is fantastic. Check in was easy and quick and the warmed cookies are sooo good! The rooms is where it fell short. They desperately need. They are run down and need upgrades. The beds were horrible. Multiple people at my conference have complained about them already. They are hard and bouncy. Definitely do not hold up to normal Hilton standards. They do have good pillows though. The WiFi also would not work in my room. They had waters in the room but of course unless you're an upper level Hilton member they're not free. Probably would not stay here again just based on the beds alone. I woke up with a horrible ache in my back.

Hockey team stay

Stayed at hotel with my U17 AAA team. Staff made check in and check out was a breeze. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Would highly recommend hotel for group and personal travel. Breakfast buffet had a great variety and was delicious.

Horrible experience

This was the worst experience I have ever had at any hotel I have stayed at in my life. Firstly, in what world does a hotel have a check in as late as 4pm? I had pre booked and pre paid and I was told they have no rooms available for a check in at 3pm, although I sat and watched as guest after guest was checked in and handed warm cookies. I was then told my check in was pushed back to 4.30pm. Once again I watched guest after guest check in. I may not be the most well dressed person, but I am a human being and deserved to be treated so. I feel very rudely treated. I will never stay at this hotel again, ever.
