Unit 434 not acceptable
snowbird6 (Michigan) on Mar 29, 2026
Resort is fine for the money. Great location and well maintained for its age. We experienced the Kona storm for the last few days of our trip and were trapped by the mud that filled the parking lot and damaged our rental car. No power for days and no way out but this isn't the fault of the resort. We were eventually able to get out and go to the Marriot near the airport. We were just happy to pay anything for something that was not unit 434. Why a resort allows a property to reach this condition reflects poorly on the resort management. We booked for 3 weeks and decided on this unit to get ocean front. We hoped that some of the issues with this unit would be addressed due to previous responses and lack of availability for alternate units. I realize this falls on me. Allowing a unit to be rented in this condition reflects poorly on the rental agent (Vacasa), VRBO, and the resort. You can see from our previous reviews that we are very flexible and understanding when it comes to our vacation venues but this was not acceptable. If Sugar Beach Resort doesn't set a minimum standard for rental units then Buyer beware.
Sugar Beach Resort #421 - Ali'i Resorts

(I would choose 4.5 stars if I could) My husband and I stayed here for 10 days in November 2025. The views are incredible, and we love to sit out on the lanai to have breakfast, lunch, a drink, and look for whales. I've stayed in other units at this resort before and have had a hard time keeping the water in the shower when they are designed with a panel of glass that spans only half-way across the opening. This unit had the same shower design; however, they were smart to install a small shower rod with a clear curtain to contain the water from escaping the opening. I was so thankful for this! The communication from Ali'i Resorts was very good - almost too good. They were very responsive to any questions we had. We thought the pool was great with lots of available lounge chairs. It can be a little cool at times, but it's probably still warmer than the ocean. It is so nice to be able to walk on the beach in either direction for quite a distance. Sadly, this is becoming somewhat rare in Maui with sea level rise. I appreciated them supplying dishwasher and laundry pods. There were also some basic spices like salt, pepper, etc. There were plenty of towels, beach towels, washcloths, etc. My only disappointment was that there were no binoculars. We love to look for whales while sitting on the lanai and really needed binoculars to do that. I asked if there was another vacant unit that we could borrow some from, but the answer was no. Every other time I've stayed in Maui - either here or at other resorts - there has ALWAYS been a pair of binoculars for guests to use. We had to buy a pair from Walmart that we wouldn't need once we left Maui. Had we known that this unit didn't have them, we could have brought some with us from home. A few other suggestions that would have made our stay a little nicer (not deal-breakers, though) are: - providing liquid hand soap (not just bar soap) - sharpening the knives (they were rusty too) - supplying coasters (because condensation happens) - providing a night light for the bathroom, because you if you turn on the light, you are just about blinded by how bright it is Just know that they provide a starter supply of things like toilet paper. Be prepared to buy some additional if you have a longer stay. For us, two rolls of TP weren't enough for 10 days. Overall, it was a terrific vacation!

SUGAR BEACH #523. The biggest thing with this resort is POOL IS NOT HEATED. As it is very windy not having a heated pool stopped us from using pool as it was cold. The carpet in this unit had so many spots all over, can't believe they didn't have carpet cleaned before we got there. I called to complain to Vacasa.
Room with an Incredible Beach View
Christiki999 (Los Angeles, California) on Jul 11, 2025
Room 213 Pros: 1. Magnificent ocean view, framed by coconut trees ?? 2. Nicely decorated main room - ownership has good taste. 3. Fold out bed can sleep 2. 4. Located directly on the golden sand beach. 5. Nice flooring in main room amd kitchen. 6. Ownership provided coffee ?? and kukui nut leis. 7. Full kitchen, w plates amd cutlery. 8. Away from the high - traffic area of Kihei 9. Dinah's sandwiches is steps away 10. Chase lounges on lanai. 11. Small waterfall by pool good for photo background 12. Activity store on property. Cons: 1. Beach ?? water not clear, but sandy from mountain runoff. Kam beaches are better. 2. Shower difficult - often I spent 5 mins wasting water ?? trying to calibrate just right for warm water. 3. Mattress needs replacement. 4. Old, small shower. 5. Bedroom carpet needed replacing years ago. 6. Chaise lounges on grass lanai, but not on beach. Summary: I will likely stay here again as I love staying on the beach. [Rental via Vacasa - Hawaiian Air offered a room which had no beach view.] The accommodations aren't the Four Seasons, but nor does it have that expensive price.

Beautiful views of the ocean from our lanai. Our condo was clean, well supplied, beautifully decorated, and quiet. We liked being away from most of the crowds in Kihei. Yes, it was very windy but it was oceanfront with the beach just past the pool area. The winds did pick up each afternoon but we still enjoyed the pool and hot tub with views of the beach. The pool was never crowded and there were an abundance of pool chairs. It is not suitable for swimming but was perfect for us. I love the sights and sounds of the ocean but my husband can’t be out in the heat of the day. We are older(67) and both have health issues. I loved being able to see and hear the waves from the lanai. Our unit was shaded during the afternoon so I spent many afternoons reading and listening to the waves.
