Sugar Beach Resort Maui unit 134 booked through VRBO, very poorly managed by Vacasa

Hello fellow Maui Travelers, Wanting to share our recent experience which was disheartening. We booked with VRBO Sugar Beach Resort, unit 134 Maui, Hawaii. This unit was managed by Vacasa. My husband and myself recently spent a month at Sugar Beach Resort. My family has stayed in different units always at Sugar Beach Resort many times, 28 to be exact over the years. We had our first unpleasant experience on this beautiful Island at our favorite resort. Unit # 134 was well equipped, the community bar b q grills were well kept, cleaned daily and we used them frequently and the miles of white sandy beach to walk daily is why we have always stayed there. We booked while we were in Maui last year through Vacasa/ VRBO. While we love the location and the beautiful beach in front and being ground level is amazing, the condo itself had a few issues. The screen door that leads to the ocean was broken laying off the tracks when we arrived, there was 3 areas of the living room ceiling that had paint peeling and handing down, also had cracks running through the ceiling from side to side, the patio door curtains to the beach were extremely filthy, the dryer put so much lint into the shower even with the vent running as per the instructions you had to wash down the wall before showering, and the bathroom sink was clogged leaving it unusable most of the time. We made 3 phone calls to Vacasa’s help/ support desk, 3 visits to the office at Sugar Beach where the ladies were shocked each time for lack of reply. The Sugar beach office asked us for pictures in an email which we did. During our 30 days we were there, not a phone call or visit from anyone at Vacasa to help with the issues. Most of the issues could have been resolved in a day. We understand it is expensive to rent in Maui and that Sugar Beach is an older complex, that doesn’t excuse the lack of response from Vacasa. 3 weeks have passed since we came home and still not response from Vacasa. I have also not found our review of our trip posted as of yet, warning others of the issues. Please know we love Maui, but the experience was not as we had expected during our month stay at Sugar Beach Resort. Mahalo! — ?feeling sad.
Great location but be very picky on the unit you rent!

First time staying here. Pros: Dina’s Sandwitch restaurant and bar is located on the property. Excellent food and drink. Free easy parking. Resort is right on the beach, beautiful views of ocean and mountains. Nice big clean pool and hot tub. Washer and dryer in unit. Air conditioning. Cons: We stayed in unit 301, Mills building. This being an odd numbered unit, our lanai was angled. This is an older resort, our unit hasn’t been updated for years except for kitchen appliances and washer/dryer. Dishwasher had a foul smell. Furniture is old and fairly uncomfortable. Shower takes a good 5 minutes to get lukewarm warm and tile floor looked filthy. Absolutely no water pressure in shower. The unit is not particularly clean if you looked closely which we tried not to. We would consider staying at resort again, but not this unit.
Amazing stay for family budget.

It was one of best vacations in my life. I love Hawaii and respite for that process was very ni e and clean . Beach is super long and great water though is but muddy so you need to walk out smoke for cleaner water to swim. Still it was just great and definitely will comeback ! I recommend helicopter trip ! Safe on hotel and spend on heli !!! One thing is negative but it’s not about esport , it is everywhere there now , there is a lot of homeless junkies they are walking around in late nights and some areas and dangerous in Maui and in other islands so be careful !!!
Great Condo & Location

We stayed in Sugar Beach unit #618 from Oct. 5 - 14, 2024. I am a fairly tough critic, but found this stay to be delightful in almost every way. The condo was impeccably clean, particularly the floors, countertops, bathroom, etc. There was no built-up grime, mold, or mildew. The view from the top floor was tremendous. We found it very quiet, even from the road on the backside. No trouble sleeping. The condo was very well equipped and we had every utensil we needed. The elevators were well maintained and clean. The pool area is spacious and while there were children, it was not overrun with children. The grass beachfront area, while small, was just fine for us. The grill area was very clean with enough (gas) grills to go around. The location, in north Kihei, I thought was perfect for traveling just about anywhere on the island. We shopped often at the Safeway supermarket, which was only a few minutes away on the highway bypass. During our stay, we traveled to Wailea, Lahaina, Hana, the Waihee Ridge Trail (Wailuku), the Haleakala Summit, and the Pipiwai Trail (Kapahulu). It was all a wonderful experience. For location, amenities, cleanliness, and price, Sugar River 618 was perfect for us.
Location close to everything. Penthouse #20 was a beautiful airbnb with Mike.

We don't usually rent airbnbs but tried this one out located in the Sugar Beach Resort as the location was perfect for us, far Northern part of Kihei, nice pool area with grills. Room 620 oceanfront penthouse was beautiful and Mike, the owner, treated us like friends. Large, free parking. Lovely beach in a bay.
