Still Wonderful

Marc_Majka (San Carlos, California) on Jul 28, 2021

My wife and I last stayed at the Hapuna in 2019. We planned another trip in November 2020, but the Hapuna was shut down due to COVID-19. We made it back in June/July 2021. Glad to report that things are pretty much back to normal. Masks are still required in enclosed indoor spaces (like the elevators or the guest laundry room), but since the Hapuna is so open, almost every space is classified as an outdoor space. The one thing that has changed is that the place is now very busy! The desk staff told us that the hotel had been running at 90-100% occupancy since February 2021. That's probably the case pretty much everywhere in the state. If you are planning a trip soon, you might want to make restaurant reservations before you leave home. We got into the Meridia without a reservation by showing up when it opened, but otherwise we couldn't get a table before 8:30 pm. Finding a lounge chair near either of the pools was also tough. People are (rudely) "claiming" chairs at 7:30 am. I had the impression that the hotel was trying hard to ramp up their staffing, especially for food service, but perhaps they weren't quite back to being fully staffed. Poolside service seemed to be stretched thin, as did staffing at breakfast. Speaking of breakfast: The buffet is not available yet, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Another small loss is easy access to the Mauna Kea Hotel. These are both Marriott properties, and in normal times you can go visit the other property to look around. Because everything is so busy, you can only get in to the Mauna Kea if you have a restaurant reservation. We're hoping that things returns even more to normal, but for now the Hapuna is still a fantastic place to go for a getaway.

Beautiful hotel, beach, rooms. Service inconsistent. Small changes would make a big difference.

We loved the hotel. The beach was beautiful. The food really good. The gym well equipped. The rooms were modern and clean. We liked having a laundry room. The elevators were fast. Coffee at Piko was great every morning. Really enjoyed the vast breakfast menu. Breakfast staff was very friendly and accommodating. We really appreciated Jennifer at the front desk and Shawn Johnson at the wellness center. Cold water stations throughout the hotel were a nice touch. Housekeeping did a great job. Concierge was no help at all. Cabana people did nothing. They would give us the bill for the cabana with suggested gratuity first thing in the morning and then immediately ask us to sign it. Most of the servers were good. Retail clerks were rude. The beach rentals were only 10am - 2pm. Should start sooner so people can take advantage of the smooth water. Pool chairs were sparse. We were told by someone that people not staying at the hotel sneak in to use the pool and take up chairs. Hotel should probably have people check in to get towels and give their room number to eliminate this problem. Small changes would make all the difference in this hotel. All in all we would stay here again.
