3rd time stay, staff keep pulling us back

davidsA1058YO (Clitheroe, United Kingdom) on Sep 27, 2024

Jamaican staff are wonderful (no interaction with new Spanish management for entire 21 night stay!). Resort is a little tired and needs some investment although early signs are that this is going to happen, I.e new sunbeds. Location is excellent, great beach, good al a carte restaurants (Seafood is the standout for both quality of food and staff). Evening entertainment poor and needs to be improved (2 decent nights during our 21 night stay). Wifi needs improving as slow and patchy. We will definitely return as long as Catalonia don't spoil it!

Awful

okya2014 (Cumming, Georgia) on Sep 24, 2024

To begin with, the resort is of very low quality. When we first entered the room, it was freezing. After adjusting the temperature, we realized it had been kept cold to mask the smell of urine. The room hasn't been remodeled in many years. The bathroom door design is far from professional—it opens inward and blocks the sink. The shower water was always cold, and I’m not sure if that’s standard here or if I just had a bad room. The bathtub was clogged when we arrived. If you're expecting refreshments in your room upon arrival, think again—those only show up from the second day onward, when they finally stock the fridge with water and drinks. The lock on the room’s main door works sporadically. You could spend 15 minutes trying to open the door; luckily, I found a housekeeper nearby who helped. The buffet food is far from what you’d expect at a resort. The breakfast cheese is sliced and placed on a wet tray, causing it to fall apart and turn white—it’s disgusting. Everything is prepared with way too much oil; fruit was the only thing we felt comfortable eating. There are four restaurants, and we visited them all. Each one has an extremely limited menu, and the food is not appetizing. The internet connection is incredibly unstable, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. We were in building 4 and had no internet, and when we did manage to connect, it was painfully slow. The surroundings, like the bars, are decent. The person handing out towels was very friendly. The beach, however, is full of seaweed, making it impossible to swim, and there are many sea urchins. You have to wear water shoes all the time to avoid getting stung. Overall, the hotel is outdated. Pay a little more and go to a resort that’s actually worth it. This one definitely isn’t.

Holiday Inn vs Catalonia Montego Bay

TonVio (Toronto, Canada) on Sep 23, 2024

Holiday Inn vs Catalonia Montego Bay September 2024 Visited Holiday Inn in April and now in September, it’s called Catalonia Montego Bay. Not much difference in the quality as yet. Reasonable price for very clean comfortable accommodation. Good air conditioning, comfortable beds and pillows. There are many new beach lounge chairs and an abundance of very delicious food. The staff members are are very helpful and friendly especially Danisa and Oshea in the a la carte dining area. There are still no channels available on the good quality Television. I asked for a radio and it was delivered within minutes. Internet is good in the lobby and sporadic to none in the room. Managers are very approachable and will do their best to accommodate your special requests. Lots of new improvements are being promised as the new ownership settles in. Hopefully they will keep the price as attractive to their clientele as they try to improve the aesthetics.

Fun in the Sun!

Traveled with family to this resort. Second time here after a many years. It's an older resort but grounds and rooms are kept very clean. The time that we went, the resort wasn't full so service was quick and efficient. Front desk agents were very inviting, polite and willing to help. Check in was quick. Rooms, older but very clean. Bed was comfortable, bathroom small but shower had good pressure and lots of hot water. AC worked well but was very loud and would often times wake us up. We found out half way through our stay that the channels on the TV needed to be reprogramed. Once that was done, we were able to get about 10 channels outside of the one we had from the start. (Maybe this is what's wrong with most TVs, they are not reprogramed after power outages.) Food was good, a lot of Jamaican options at the buffet. Service was good at the buffet and great in the a la carte restaurants. Our favorite a la carte was the Sea food and Jamaican restaurants. Least favorite was the Italian. Main complaint we had was in the main buffet. Too many flies!!! Especially at breakfast time. It was a turn off! We would spend most of our time fanning flies away then eating. It was very unpleasant. Maybe management can look into doing something about alleviating this problem. Perhaps, putting up mesh around the dinning area that faces the pool. Please do something about the flies!!! No one wants flies on the food they want to eat. Pool bar, Jerk hut, ice cream bar were good and worth checking out. Entertainment and night life is lacking. More effort needs to be put into this area. Most nights, they only had singing. Not everyone is into that. It would have been nice to see a show or have interactive games/ activities for guest to participate in. Overall, this resort is a good value for the price. Very family oriented and it also has an adult side. I would return to the resort in the future. Thank you Catalonia Montego Bay for a nice time.
