Romantic Vacation

jcil4ever (Saxapahaw, North Carolina) on Aug 03, 2021

My wife and I just finished an amazing trip at Sunset at the Palms. We booked using a guest certificate from my parents’ Interval International time share exchange. Note that this requires an additional all-inclusive fee, which was clearly documented and which the hotel contacted me to pay about two weeks before our arrival. This was all handled very smoothly. We used the online check-in option in advance of our arrival. We used this to pre-book our airport transfer. Remember that the resort is about an hour and a half from Montego Bay. Having transfer prearranged, combined with the included Club Mobay VIP arrival service, made getting through customs and getting on the road much easier. Sinclair bookended our trip, picking us up from the airport and taking us back and provided safe and timely service, all while introducing us to Jamaica’s geography and culture and sharing some about his life. We also prebooked several excursions on Sunset’s website. This wasn’t as helpful as I thought it would be as some of the excursions (in our case, The River Walk and Jungle River Tubing) were no longer offered, but this was refunded to me with no problem. This was fixed easily enough by the wonderful concierge staff but, in hindsight, it would have been better to just book these excursions in person in consultation with the concierge upon arrival. We did the Martha Brae Rafting excursion. We ended up going later in the day and it was raining when we arrived. Perhaps it would have been more enjoyable in good weather. In addition, note that it’s on the other side of the airport, 2-2.5 hours away one way. In general, at least while we were there, try to start your day early as we found rain almost always came by 2-3:00. We did the Black River and YS Falls excursion on our last full day and really enjoyed it. Harry was our driver/guide and went out of his way to make our trip as enjoyable as possible and providing great conversation. The excursion included a one-hour boat trip up the Black River to see crocodiles and other wildlife followed by up close encounters with crocodiles in their nursery, lunch, and a visit to the beautiful YS Falls. One drawback: we went on a Saturday, and the falls were very busy as locals tend to visit on the weekends. There is also a zipline (not included with the cost of the excursion) that might be worth booking ahead of time too! We also did the Chukka Ride and Swim. My wife enjoyed going horseback riding through the grounds, where her guide pointed out native plants, an old windmill, and a fishing dock. She also liked the swim, which was a short loop on horseback in Chukka’s cove. Everything is accessible for new riders; you just need to make sure you wear close toed water shoes! I was unable to actually complete the excursion as I exceeded the weight limit which we discovered when we arrived on site (not listed on the Sunset website). The Chukka staff were helpful in accommodating me on an alternate activity (zipline). I would recommend just booking these Chukka activities directly through the Chukka website. Just look for the Ocean Outpost site, which is about an hour each way from Sunset. Booking directly allows you to mix and match what you want to do and transportation is still included. While the excursions were nice, my wife and I agreed that leaving the facility made it so obvious how well run Sunset was. We missed how smoothly things ran onsite when we went to other establishments. Our concierge Tobian was very helpful, reaching out before our arrival and anticipating our needs while we were there. She went out of our way to help us sort out the excursions, line up our return COVID testing, and printing out the results. She greeted us on arrival and recognized and spoke to us throughout the week. E-mails to the concierge address were always quickly answered, and they were also easily accessible through phone and by stopping by the front desk. When Tobian wasn’t there, the rest of the team was also very helpful. Iesha helped us several times. We really enjoyed the food at Sunset. For breakfast, we discovered partway through the week that a Jamaican option was available, but this wasn’t on the menu. We ordered this a few times and really enjoyed it—I wish they noted this on the menu! Lunch is less structured, but there are hot options available both on the main property and at the beach. For dinner, be sure to read the information sent to you and sign up for times to enjoy dinner at the fancier Lotus Leaf restaurant and the Chef’s Showcase. There was also often live music at dinner time which added to the ambiance. In addition to the food, we found the service at meals to be top notch. Servers were attentive and friendly. This may seem like a small thing, but my wife ordered pineapple juice at one meal. Cornelius came back, apologetic that they were out. Instead of just asking what other juice she might like and knowing we didn’t really like to drink alcohol, he suggested she try a blended fruit punch and she loved it and we enjoyed many more that week. That’s nothing revolutionary, but his initiative there really improved that meal and the whole week, and he continued to look out for us the rest of our stay. We saw that same sort of initiative in the housekeeping staff. A door hanger is included that can be used to request housekeeping. We did this several times and always found our room cleaned very well, even with some nice touches, like creative towel creations. Again, a small thing that just brightened our day when we returned to our room. As others have mentioned, I wish restocking bottled water was part of the room cleaning. One thing we realized as we talked to drivers and others one on one is how hard the past year and a half have been as tourism nearly ceased. Visitor levels are only recently picking back up, but we couldn’t tell it. The property was very clean and well maintained. We also found that the staff did a superb job following the COVID protocols, always wearing masks and politely checking our temperature at meals. There were even nice small touches, like nice smelling hand sanitizer as we entered the dining area. These small details really added up to a wonderful time. We really loved the layout of the facility and the privacy it offered. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and the rooms felt secluded while only being a short walk from the main compound. WiFi was available through the main property, though it would sometimes not work great in the dining area. There was no WiFi at the beach. I was originally planning to buy a sim card, but found the WiFi to provide plenty of connection for vacation. This was our first introduction to an all-inclusive resort, and we loved it. While we normally enjoy being a little more immersed in the local culture outside of the resort, this was a great option during the pandemic. It was also refreshing to not have to worry about finding good meal options, but knowing we would be well fed without a search. We never felt nickel and dimed on site. Thank you Sunset at the Palms for providing a truly refreshing experience!

We can’t wait to return!

lovingcsa (New York) on Aug 02, 2021

My husband and I just returned from celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful vacation. This resort was exactly what we needed after the past year. The vibe was so chill and relaxing. So much better then the larger resorts, at least for us. The rooms, grounds and beach are immaculate. The staff works hard and it shows. Service at the restaurants was great…never a wait and your food was delivered quickly. The nightly entertainment was good. We particularly enjoyed the karaoke and Paul the piano man. The entire front desk staff were always helpful and pleasant. Nadine, Marlando, Carson, Mufasa, and ALL of the staff were exceptional. They make it hard for us to ever stay anywhere else when visiting Jamaica! Thank you for making our trip a memorable one. We are already planning our return.
