During my recent stay at the VH Gran Ventana Hotel in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, I had a mixed experience. Although check-in was a bit slow and my room wasn't ready until 4:36 pm, the private check-in presentation was well-done. The pool, while small, was always crowded and I would have appreciated more power outlets in my room. The TV and satellite signals were weak and the Wi-Fi was not great. The hotel seemed to attract an older crowd, and while the staff tried to provide entertainment, it was not always successful. However, the cleaning staff and beverage staff were wonderful, and the bartenders at the private beach were especially helpful. The private beach was not as upscale as I expected, and vendors would often approach guests, which was a bit of a hassle. I found some of the front desk staff to be unprofessional and moody, which was in line with previous reviews I had read. I also found the hotel to be disorganized, and the special treatment for premium and royal guests was not worth it. Additionally, the snacks at the store were overpriced. The Ocean Grill and Octopus Grill were just okay, but the dessert cart at Sapora Di Mare was amazing. The manicures, tours, and massages offered by locals were a bit of a hassle. I appreciated that the hotel staff would call me if I left anything in the room.
Great Resort

My Wife and I went to this Resort. We had a great time. Here's some things about the Resort and I'm going to debunk other reviews. The Resort and on the smaller scale, but that makes it good to get to the buffet, beach and other areas. Get a room in the "Catalina" area if you want to be closer to the action. But because of this it might be louder at night. If you cant do stairs, 3 flights get a room on the lower level as per there is no elevators. The buffet was above average, but you have to consider they are making for hundreds of people. For Breakfast they make fresh omelets and eggs, dinner they have fresh pasta. The rest of the food wasn't bad, but not as fresh as its buffet food. As for the 2 a la Carte we went to, the Italian wasn't amazing, because the food was more buffet but they serve you. The ocean grill the food was fresher. The 3rd was seafood but we don't prefer seafood so we didn't attend. The rooms are average size. Personally I don't spend much time in the room, I don't know who would. Some people complained about the size. If you want bigger go to Vegas and pay for a Penthouse suite. The Pool and beach area were very nice. Drinks every where were very good . They don't water down anything. For those of you new to Vacations bring your own mugs/bubbas. The Staff there are constantly cleaning so if anyone says the pool is dirty or there's leaves everywhere they just feel or someone just brought it in the pool. The staff if up at 6am to clean up every thing they can. The Entertainment wasn't amazing but you have to realize its the same staff working there all day. They also make only a couple bucks an hour. If you want great Entertainment go to Vegas and tell em Ryan sent you. We tipped here and there nothing outrageous. Only if someone does something special for you do they expect a tip. We tipped certain staff we seen step out of there way. The Resort is 30 min from the Airport. We went on a Island Bonita Excursion. Great if you snorkel if you don't, don't bother. It was also 2.5 hrs ride to get there kind of a little long. The beach was clean, Staff clean the beach of debris every morning. Bring snorkel equipment especially if you have kids. We fed the fish Bananas and French Toast from the Buffet. Also bring an underwater Camera would be great. Only small issues we had. When it rained the floor for super slippery. But they moped in the mornings any wet areas. Second after they changed our sheets we had Ants in our bed. Really small Ants. We think its from the sand on our feet. We just squished them with our fingers and only a few were seen the next couple days. No they didn't bite. We also found it to be lots of (French) Canadians. Which was good I got to practice So for the Money this place is Amazing. I'll be going back in a couple years
