Don’t go

dianelikestoshop (Harrow, Canada) on Feb 09, 2026

This was our third time at ROC Barlovento, and probably our last. Although the property and beach is beautiful the buildings are in desperate need of repair. We paid to upgrade to ROC Plus, I feel it was a waste of money. There was nothing “superior” about the room, especially having no hot water all week. Our room was on the 3rd floor, the railing and some steps were loose on the stairway. The food was awful and sparse. Good thing I brought snacks! We don’t drink alcohol much but the drink variety was also sparse, even with pop. This could be an amazing resort with some much needed renovations.

Roc Barlovento – Value for the Price

Steve J (Ottawa, Canada) on Jan 22, 2026

We paid $950 from Ottawa, and for that price the resort was acceptable. Overall rating: 6.5/10. Grounds: The resort looks tired and run down in many areas, which was its weakest point visually. Landscaping was well maintained. Entertainment: Repetitive and fairly boring, with similar dancing and singing every night. The main singer, however, has an excellent voice. Food: Food was repetitive but consistently flavourful. The bread was excellent. The Mexican à la carte stood out with very good tacos and also served a decent breakfast and lunch. The Fusion à la carte (beef or chicken fajitas) was just okay. The omelette station was great, and the staff member was always smiling. There was no bacon or orange juice available during our stay. A beachside snack bar served sandwiches that looked good. Bars & Drinks: The lobby coffee bar was excellent, with friendly staff. The lobby bar was well stocked with no major shortages. Wine and beer were usually available, though occasionally missing in restaurants. The beach bar had good frozen drinks. Rooms: Our first room (2nd floor, main building) had several issues: broken locks, non-working safe, no hot water. We were moved the next day to a 3rd-floor room, which was better overall. Hot water was inconsistent throughout the week, with low pressure and mostly cold showers. One traveller in our group experienced theft by a replacement maid, so keep valuables secured. Balconies are very small and only have one chair. Air conditioning worked well. Pool: Basic pool areas with plenty of seating and shade. Water features were not working, but the pools were usable. Beach: Excellent beach with lots of shade and seating available at all times. One of the highlights of the resort. Off-Resort: We enjoyed exploring Varadero. A horse and buggy tour cost $40 CAD for about 2–2.5 hours with multiple stops. Dining off-resort was great—excellent pizza at Kiki’s and a delicious meal at El Toro Steakhouse. Local markets were fun and worth visiting. Overall: Not luxury, but acceptable for the price. A good option if beach access and value matter more than amenities.

Our 17th Barlovento Experience was the best so far

Marc F (Nanaimo, Canada) on Dec 16, 2025

Our second home in Varadero, this may have been our best vacation (#17) ever. Once again our room was comfortable and always clean thanks to our housekeeper Clarisbel and we enjoyed hot showers everyday. The food and beverage supplies were plentiful and delicious. The beach and ocean are the best in the world in our opinion. We appreciate the effort the resort puts into their Canada Day and Loyal Guest celebrations, always fun. And the best part of the resort are the staff aka our family including the bartenders Joel, Joseph, Henry, Eudy, Margarita, Miguel, Marlon, Ida, Yasmani, Yaris, Sylvio, Osvaldo, and Alex (hope I didn't miss anyone), all the talented chefs and restaurant servers including Junior, Dianelys, Yuleni, Iris and many more, the front desk staff Osmany, Niurka and again many more. We were also very happy to see Daniel returning to look after the pools, which are much cleaner now and we missed our favourite girl Yuesett, we look forward to her being back next time. What makes the Barlovento special for all of their loyal guests is how everyone looks after them and that it truly does feel like we're at home. A special thanks to the management team including Dalia, Arletys, Claudia, Yorki, Yuni, Orelvis and Antonio for keeping everything in order. See you all again next November, it won't be easy not being there for a year this time.
