Earning WestJet dollars

To earn WestJet dollars, you will need to join the program and provide your WestJet Rewards ID when you book WestJet flights, WestJet Vacations packages, or book car rentals, hotels and travel insurance online at westjet.com. For full details, including earn rates, click here.

WestJet dollars will appear in your account within 30 days of completion of travel.

Subject to the exclusions below, annual qualifying spend is one hundred per cent of the amount spent on eligible published base fares for WestJet-marketed flights you have flown within a qualifying year and, twenty per cent of the individual portion of the base price of eligible WestJet Vacations packages you have booked on or after August 20, 2018 and completed within a qualifying year. The following are not eligible toward annual qualifying spend: Basic fares, Member Exclusive fares, contracted fares, tour operator fares, WestJet Vacations spend for bookings made prior to August 20,2018, WestJet Vacations group package bookings, partner-marketed flights, WestJet-designated partner bookings made on westjet.com (including, but not limited to, car rentals, hotel stays and travel insurance), gift cards, taxes, fees, charges, and any portion paid with WestJet dollars or any other reward program redemption.

Your qualifying year is a 12-month period based on your date of enrolment. Your first qualifying year begins on the date that you enrol and ends on the last day of the month, one year from the date that you enrolled. For example, if you enrol on March 15, 2018, your first qualifying year will be March 15, 2018 to March 31, 2019. Each subsequent qualifying year will then be a 12-month period, i.e., April 1 to March 31.

Annual qualifying spend is based on the dates your flights are flown or vacation packages are completed. For example, if your qualifying year is the 12-month period of April 1 to March 31, your qualifying spend will be tracked based on travel completed during that period.

When booking a flight on westjet.com select 'Sign in' located at the at the top-right corner of the page and sign into your WestJet Rewards account using your 9-digit WestJet Rewards ID or email address and password. With this one quick extra step our system will auto-populate your guest details, including your WestJet Rewards ID, into the booking. You will also be prompted to sign in during your booking. When booking a WestJet Vacations package, enter your 9-digit WestJet Rewards ID in the member number field, found on the Payment screen.

One WestJet dollar is equivalent to one Canadian dollar when redeemed on the base fare portion of an eligible flight or vacation package. WestJet dollars cannot be used towards the payment of taxes, fees or charges. Please refer to Redeeming WestJet dollars for more information.

A WestJet-marketed flight is any flight that has a WS carrier code preceding the flight number (eg. WS 656, WS 3109, WS 5010). The flight may be operated by WestJet, WestJet Encore, WestJet Link by Pacific Coastal, or a partner airline. Regardless of which carrier operates it, if the flight number starts with WS and you have purchased an eligible published fare you will earn WestJet dollars on that flight.

Most WestJet dollars do not expire, however there are certain circumstances, such as when WestJet dollars are issued through promotions, compensation, or limited-time promotional offers, when they will expire. You can keep tabs on expiry dates, as applicable, by visiting the Expiring WestJet dollars page in your WestJet Rewards account.

Earn rates and flight benefits are determined by your WestJet Rewards tier at the time travel is completed. There are four tiers in the WestJet Rewards program:

As a new member, you’ll start in the Teal tier. Starting with your first dollar and up to $2,999 in qualifying spend in your qualifying year, you will earn WestJet dollars at a rate of 0.5 per cent back on eligible WestJet flights and 0.5 per cent back on eligible WestJet Vacations packages.

Once you reach $3,000 in qualifying spend in your qualifying year, you’ll move up to the Silver tier with earn rates of 3 per cent back on eligible WestJet flights and 1 per cent back on eligible WestJet Vacations packages as long as you continue to maintain Silver status. You’ll also receive Silver flight benefits, including your first and second checked bags free, four airport lounge vouchers, four advance seat selection vouchers and Zone 2 boarding. You will also be eligible for complimentary upgrades to Premium, subject to availability, with the purchase of EconoFlex fares.

At $5,000 in qualifying spend in your qualifying year, you’ll move up to the Gold tier with earn rates of 5 per cent back on eligible WestJet flights and 1.5 per cent back on eligible WestJet Vacations packages as long as you continue to maintain Gold status. As a Gold member you now also have early access to purchase confirmed upgrades to Premium up to 48 hours prior to departure, as well as higher priority for complimentary upgrades to Premium, subject to availability, with the purchase of EconoFlex fares.

At $8,000 in qualifying spend in your qualifying year, you’ll advance to the Platinum tier with earn rates of 8 per cent back on eligible WestJet flights and 2 per cent back on eligible WestJet Vacations packages as long as you continue to maintain Platinum status. Your Platinum flight benefits will include first, second and third checked bags free, priority boarding (Zone 1), no fee for same-day flight changes at check-in, ten airport lounge vouchers, unlimited advance seat selection, priority security screening, priority check-in and bag drop (at select airports) and access to a dedicated Platinum priority support number. Milestone awards are tied to your qualifying spend in any given qualifying year and are awarded only once the spend requirements are achieved, regardless of your tier status. The first milestone award, a WestJet-wide companion voucher, is awarded with $4,000 of qualifying spend. WestJet-wide companion vouchers will also be awarded at $6,000 in qualifying spend and again at $8,000 and each increment of $2,000 in spend thereafter.

More information on WestJet Rewards tiers can be found here.

The timeframe to submit a missing rewards request for partner airline activity may be shorter; please see Our partners for more details. All missing rewards requests must be submitted using the online form available when you sign into your account. When submitting the form please be sure to complete all fields, including the airline ticket number. Please allow up to 30 days for processing. It is highly recommended that you keep your boarding passes, as they are the best source for the information you'll need to submit a missing rewards request.

No. Only flights marketed by WestJet and purchased with an eligible published fare are eligible. Partner-marketed flights do not count towards your annual qualifying spend, however, they provide you with a great way to add more WestJet dollars to your account, particularly when your travel plans take you outside WestJet's network. WestJet dollars awarded on partner-marketed flights are based on distance flown, instead of amount spent, plus class of services bonuses, when applicable. To learn more about earning WestJet dollars with our airline partners, please see Our partners.

In June 2017 we made some changes to WestJet dollar expiry and WestJet dollars purchased through points.com no longer expire. They are yours to keep for as long as you want, and use whenever you’d like.

The news was featured on an email sent on October 10, 2018 to members who were subscribed to WestJet promotional email communications.

The updates to tiers, including the launch of the new Platinum tier, came into effect on December 12, 2018.

There are now four levels of membership - Teal, Silver, Gold and Platinum – which come with a variety of rewards and benefits, based on your individual spend on WestJet flights and vacation packages in your qualifying year.

Teal is our entry-level tier for WestJet Rewards. You become a Teal member as soon as you join and remain at that level until your annual qualifying spend exceeds $3,000. Teal members continue to earn WestJet dollars on every WestJet flight, but at a reduced rate of 0.5%. The same rate applies for WestJet Vacations packages. Want to earn WestJet dollars faster and receive other benefits to save money on your travel? Our WestJet RBC® Mastercard is the perfect option for members who fly infrequently and may not be able to reach the higher earning rates and benefits of a top tier. Learn more

The Silver tier continues to start at $3,000 in annual qualifying spend, with additional benefits for Silver members, including a second free checked bag, priority check-in and bag drop, Zone 2 boarding and access to complimentary upgrades to our Premium cabin with the purchase of an EconoFlex fare.

The Gold tier now starts at $5,000 in qualifying spend - $1,000 less than before. Gold members continue to enjoy all the fantastic flight benefits they did before , along with new additions including more advance seat selection vouchers, and higher priority for complimentary upgrades to our Premium cabin with the purchase of an EconoFlex fare.

The new Platinum tier starts at $8,000 in qualifying spend. Platinum members enjoy the highest earn rates on WestJet flights and vacation packages, along with unlimited advance seat selection on westjet.com, a range of priority services, the highest priority for complimentary upgrades to our Premium cabin with the purchase of an EconoFlex fare, and so much more.

We improved the first award you receive and increased the frequency with which you earn subsequent awards. The first award continues to be issued at $4,000 in qualifying spend, however, it has been expanded for travel to anywhere in WestJet’s network, instead of only within Canada. Subsequent milestone awards are issued at every $2,000 thereafter, meaning you receive milestone rewards faster than ever before. All milestone awards issued are WestJet-wide companion vouchers, valid for travel in Economy or Premium.

If you're a current WestJet Rewards member, you can see which tier you're in when you sign in to your account at westjet.com or on the WestJet app any time after December 12, 2018. Members subscribed to account updates may also be contacted by email. Silver and Gold member who meet the new qualifying spend requirements will be automatically placed into their new tier on December 12, 2018. For example, members who are Silver today but have $5,000 in spend as of December 12, 2018 will automatically be placed into Gold. Members who are Gold today but have $8,000 in spend as of December 12, 2018 will automatically be placed into Platinum.

No, they didn't. As a primary cardholder of the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, you'll continue to receive the same great benefits you do today. Our WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is offered to any member, regardless of tier status, and comes with its own unique benefits. As a primary cardholder you'll continue to enjoy an annual round-trip companion voucher starting at $99 CAD (plus taxes, fees and charges), along with a free first checked bag for you and up to eight additional guests on the same reservation. You're also eligible to earn 1.5% on everyday purchases and 2% on WestJet purchases when you use your card. And don't forget, that’s on top of the earn rates you receive when booking with WestJet as a Teal, Silver, Gold or Platinum member.

If you're a current WestJet Rewards member, you’re able to see which tier you are in when you sign into your account at westjet.com or on the WestJet app.

The new benefits are available now. Silver, Gold and Platinum members subscribed to WestJet Rewards account updates received an email notification on December 12, 2018 when the new benefits came into effect.

Once you achieve a top tier, you’ll enjoy your earn rates and flight benefits for the remainder of your current qualifying year and the entire next qualifying year. Unless of course you achieve a higher tier, in which case you'll enjoy that higher tier's benefits. The ability to keep your top-tier status and benefits in future years is always based on your total qualifying spend in each successive qualifying year.

As a Silver member, you continue to have the same earn rates of 3% and 1% on WestJet flights and vacation packages, respectively, along with four advance seat selection vouchers and four lounge vouchers, and now also receive:

  • An additional checked bag, for a total of two free checked bags
  • Priority check-in and bag drop
  • Zone 2 boarding privileges
  • Access to complimentary upgrades to Premium with the purchase of EconoFlex fares

We now welcome members into Gold starting at $5,000 in qualifying spend. Gold members now also receive:

  • Two additional advance seat selection vouchers
  • Early access to purchase an upgrade to Premium as an ongoing benefit

  • Dedicated priority support number
  • No fee for same-day flight changes at check-in
  • Early access to purchase an upgrade to Premium
  • Highest priority for complimentary upgrades to Premium with the purchase of EconoFlex fares

With the purchase of EconoFlex fares, Platinum, Gold and Silver members are eligible for complimentary upgrades to Premium, subject to availability. Complimentary upgrades are available on all WestJet flights (excluding flights to/from Europe) and are not guaranteed; rather they are allocated in our reservation system before the 24-hour check-in period opens and assigned in priority order by tier, starting with Platinum. Your chances of receiving an upgrade will vary. When it happens, we’re sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find a new seat assignment when you check in for your flight, but if a sure bet is more your style, consider purchasing either a Premium fare or an upgrade to Premium, starting at 48 hours from departure for Platinum and Gold members via the Platinum or Gold priority support number. Watch for news in 2019 for a comprehensive upgrade program to be added to the program.

A companion voucher issued as a milestone award is an award you will receive when you reach certain qualifying spend milestones in your annual qualifying year. At $4,000 in qualifying spend you'll receive a WestJet-wide companion voucher, valid for round-trip travel in Economy or Premium anywhere in WestJet's world (excluding flights operated by partner airlines). At $6,000 in qualifying spend and again at $8,000 and each increment of $2,000 in spend thereafter you'll receive another WestJet-wide companion voucher. Companion vouchers issued as milestone awards allow you, the member, to take anyone with you on the same itinerary for no additional cost, other than taxes, fees and charges. The base fare for the companion will be waived, regardless of the amount. Valid on published fares in Economy or Premium, including seat sale fares paid for in whole or in part with WestJet dollars. Not valid on Business or Member Exclusive fares.

An annual round-trip companion voucher is part of the welcome and annual renewal award available to new and existing WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard cardholders. Click here to see full terms and conditions.

For $99 CAD (plus taxes, fees and charges) you can redeem your round-trip companion voucher on any WestJet-marketed and operated flight within Canada or to/from the continental U.S.

For $299 CAD (plus taxes, fees and charges) you can redeem your round-trip companion voucher on any WestJet-marketed and operated flight to/from Hawaii, Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean.

For $399 CAD (plus taxes, fees and charges) you can redeem your round-trip companion voucher on any WestJet-marketed and operated flight to/from the rest of the WestJet network.

A WestJet-marketed and operated flight is one that has a WS carrier code preceding the flight number and is operated by either WestJet, WestJet Encore or WestJet Link by Pacific Coastal.

Flight benefits are a set of travel privileges awarded to you as a result of achieving the Silver, Gold or Platinum tiers in your qualifying year. Flight benefits vary by tier and may include the waiving of fees for products and services, such as checked baggage and advance seat selection, and access to priority services, such as priority security screening and priority boarding, when travelling on WestJet-marketed and operated flights. Full details on the flight benefits awarded in each tier can be found here.

Once you achieve Silver, Gold or Platinum, you'll get to keep your flight benefits for the remainder of your current qualifying year until the end of your next qualifying year. The ability to keep your Silver, Gold or Platinum tier and benefits in future years is based on your total qualifying spend in the second year and each year following. Exceptions to the validity period may apply when flight benefits are awarded on a promotional basis.

Effective June 6, 2017, we’ve made some changes to WestJet dollar expiry. Most WestJet dollars no longer expire, but some still will. We can explain.

WestJet dollars directly earned from purchase transactions with WestJet or its partners, including a WestJet Credit Card, will no longer expire. We refer to these as base WestJet dollars as they represent the base amount, or minimum, you earn on eligible transactions.

Bonus WestJet dollars awarded through promotions, compensation, or limited-time promotional offers will continue to have expiry dates.

Need an example?
Let’s say you’re a Teal Rewards member and you’ve paid for and taken a flight with WestJet – the base amount of WestJet dollars you earned (i.e. 1% back in WestJet dollars on WestJet flights) are yours to keep for as long as you want, and use however you’d like. No expiry. Then, on your next trip you decide to take advantage of a Rewards offer which awards bonus WestJet dollars. The bonus WestJet dollars you’ve been awarded will have an expiry date. So basically, base WestJet dollars don’t expire; bonus WestJet dollars do.

Need a binary, either/or representation? We’ve got a chart.

Base earn on WestJet flights Bonus earn on WestJet flights
Base earn on WestJet Vacations packages Bonus earn on WestJet Vacations packages
Base earn on Car Rental purchases Bonus earn on Car Rentals
Base earn on Hotel purchases Bonus earn on Hotels
Base earn on Travel Insurance purchases Bonus earn on WestJet Credit Card purchases
Base earn on Airline Partner flights Bonus earn to join WestJet Rewards
Base earn on WestJet Credit Card purchases Bonus earn on RBC Rewards points transfer and conversion to WestJet dollars
WestJet dollars earned by obtaining a WestJet Credit Card Limited-time bonuses of WestJet dollars for promotional purposes
RBC Rewards points transferred and converted to WestJet dollars Limited-time bonuses of WestJet dollars for guest service compensation
WestJet dollars purchased via points.com Limited-time bonuses of WestJet dollars for contests and giveaways

This also applies to WestJet dollars already in your account. So, if you have base WestJet dollars that were previously set to expire, such as those earned through purchases on a WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard, the expiry dates have been removed; however, any bonus WestJet dollars awarded or gifted to you, such as through a limited-time offer or as compensation, will continue to maintain the original expiry dates.

You can easily find this information when you sign in to your WestJet Rewards account and check the Expiring WestJet dollars page.

We take care of that for you. All of WestJet’s booking systems are configured to automatically use the earliest expiring WestJet dollars first. All you need to do is decide where and when you want to go.
