Great facilities, lots of training needed for staff and management.

Catalonia Grand Costa Mujeres offers a stylish, modern setting on a beautiful, swimmable beach, but inconsistent service, poor sargassum management, and unresponsive leadership made our late-March 2026 stay disappointing overall. Overall impression (3/31/26–4/6/26) We chose Catalonia Grand Costa Mujeres for its contemporary design and family-friendly all-inclusive concept, and the physical hotel largely delivers on that promise. Unfortunately, the operational side—from beach upkeep to front-desk service and management responsiveness—fell well short of expectations for an established European all-inclusive chain in Mexico. Highlights Design and atmosphere: The resort’s architecture is sleek and modern, with open spaces and décor that makes it feel more upscale than many typical family all-inclusive properties. Public areas, pools, and suites all reflect a newer build and create a strong first impression on arrival. Beach and water: The beach location in Costa Mujeres is a strong point, with generally swimmable water and a wide stretch of sand when conditions cooperate. On clear days, it absolutely delivers the classic turquoise-water Caribbean experience many guests come for. Buffet food quality: From a food standpoint, the main buffet is one of the brighter spots, offering plenty of variety and generally good quality compared with similar all-inclusive properties in the area. When you can actually get timely service, meals can be quite enjoyable. Bar staff: Bartenders at the main lobby, pools, and beach stand out as the most attentive and genuinely friendly staff on the property. They often try to make up for service gaps elsewhere, and interactions at the bars were some of the few consistently positive service experiences. Lowlights Sargassum handling: While seaweed is a regional issue across much of the Mexican Caribbean, sargassum management at this hotel is a serious weakness. During our stay, the hotel appeared to clean the beach only once per day, which is nowhere near sufficient when landings are heavy, and even after raising the issue with staff, the response and follow-through were minimal at best. Buffet service and staffing: The buffet’s good food is undermined by visible understaffing and poor floor management. Tables sit uncleared, drink refills are slow, and basic requests are often missed, giving the whole operation a rushed, chaotic feel that drags the dining experience down significantly. Front desk and check-in: Reception feels robotic and transactional, with staff rushing through interactions instead of welcoming paying guests and resolving issues properly. Check-in/check-out and simple requests at the front desk lacked warmth and left us feeling more like case numbers than guests. Timeshare pressure: As with many all-inclusive properties in the region, there is noticeable pressure around vacation club/timeshare presentations, accompanied by overly optimistic promises. It adds an unwelcome layer of salesmanship to what is supposed to be a relaxing holiday. Weak, invisible management: On-the-ground management presence is limited, and leadership seems unreceptive to feedback, especially around staffing levels, beach cleanliness, and service standards. For a branded European chain that markets itself as higher-end, this lack of accountability and follow-through is particularly disappointing and raises questions about whether post-Covid cost-cutting has become the norm across all-inclusive resorts in this area. Overall disappointment By the end of our 3/31/26–4/6/26 stay, the gap between the resort’s attractive physical product and its inconsistent service, poor sargassum response, and disengaged management left us genuinely disappointed. The lack of meaningful reaction from people in charge, even after concerns were raised, made it hard to feel valued as guests and overshadowed the hotel’s real strengths in design, beach setting, and bar staff.

Fantastic Easter holiday

This is my 3rd time at Catalonia Grand Costa Mejures. They always exceed my expectations. The food was excellent. Special thanks to Martin, the manager of Steakville for his knowledge of Mexican and South American wines. Lili our Butler and Ceaser our Concierge were extremely helpful as always. From greeting us as we came into the lobby, up until waiting with us until our cab arrived, they were always on top of things for us. Mucho Gracias. See you in October
