Nice Villa, Frustrating Billing and Resort Policies
AlmaRuthA (Pleasanton, California) on Jun 20, 2026
We stayed at this Montecristo villa for three nights to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The villa was clean, spacious, and generally as described in the listing. While it was comfortable and well-maintained, the furnishings and finishes felt somewhat dated and could benefit from updating. Other than the jacuzzi not initially heating to the desired temperature, everything worked properly, and maintenance responded quickly when we reported the issue. Unfortunately, several aspects of the overall experience were disappointing. First, communication before our arrival was poor. I received an email from someone introducing themselves as our concierge/butler and sent multiple emails requesting assistance with coordinating our stay. I never received a single response. Having stayed at many luxury beach properties with attentive concierge and house management services, this was surprising and frustrating. Guests should also be aware of the transportation logistics within the resort. Getting to the market or pools often requires taking a shuttle and then transferring to another vehicle. While manageable, it can be time-consuming and inconvenient if you need something quickly. The grocery situation was even more frustrating. Outside grocery delivery services are not permitted inside Montecristo, so unless you’re willing to take a taxi to the security gate to meet a delivery driver, you’re largely dependent on the resort market. We ended up spending over $600 on groceries alone. Some examples of the pricing: a bag of Starbucks coffee was over $42, Stevia packets were over $15, bags of cheese were approximately $18 each, a 12-pack of bottled water was over $40, and Topo Chico mineral water worked out to about $8 per bottle. While resort markets are typically more expensive, these prices felt excessive and left guests with very limited alternatives. The biggest issue, however, was the billing process. Our lodging had already been prepaid, yet nearly everyone in our group of nine encountered problems or confusion with their final bill. Various charges appeared that were either unclear or not adequately explained. Additionally, although I provided my credit card for incidentals at check-in—which is standard practice at most hotels—many of the other guests in our group were also required to place substantial authorization holds on their credit cards. In some cases, hundreds of dollars were tied up for several days after checkout before being released. We also noticed charges, including charitable donations and other fees, appearing on bills without clear authorization or explanation. This should be communicated much more clearly before arrival and at checkout. The villa itself met our expectations, and the maintenance staff was responsive when needed. However, the lack of concierge support, transportation inconveniences, extremely inflated grocery prices, and confusing billing practices overshadowed what otherwise could have been a pleasant stay. Unfortunately, because of these issues, I would not choose to stay at Montecristo again.
