This was a honeymoon trip, which started really well with a free room upgrade to a Romance Deluxe. The room was lovely and like the hotel, really nicely decorated. Housekeeping service was excellent, with towels twice a day and never issues getting a beach towel.
The food let this hotel down for us, it's not 5 star. The buffet breakfast on the adults side was very limited for choice, so we tried the family side and although more choice, it was cold. Lunchtime again seemed limited and opening times on the app weren't always correct. I tended to have sushi at the beach bar, which was lovely.
You had to book the a la carte restaurants using the app, which was fine if you booked at least 2 days ahead. You had to use your phone in the restaurants to see the menu. If you are early the service & food was much better than after 7pm when they seem to not cope as well. Again the food was not always hot. We always had evening drinks at the beach bar, mainly because the beer was less 'tangy' and service from Daniel was great.
The beach was stunning with the clearest sea water I've seen in the Dominican but it was totally ruined by the number of sunbeds crammed into the small area. It was not relaxing at all, surrounded by none stop noise. There's also an issue with reserving beds, especially those with shade.
We did two excursions booked through TUI. First was Saona Supreme. This was a trip via catamaran to a very disappointing snorkelling spot then onto Saona. When we got there couples were given Pina coladas in pineapples that had been pre booked but not even offered to us. Unfortunately this trip was ruined by the weather. The speedboat ride back was freezing!!
The second trip was sold to us as a culture safari, we were supposed to learn about making chocolate, cigars and coffee, with a visit to the mountains, a church and Macao beach. We were told by the to rep to take swimwear, change of clothes, towels etc. Having travelled with all our bags we were disappointed to find out we were not visiting the beach and the 'how to make stuff' was just a ploy to get us into shops. These trips were massively over priced for what we got, I'd recommend booking with the hotel instead.
Overall our stay at Catalonia was nice, it has potential, but there's work to be done at this hotel to make it more luxurious.

We went for 1 week-Jan 3-10/23. We were there last year, same time.
Our suite was beautiful, a duplex suite with 2 full bathrooms and our own private pool.
Maid service excellent! The food was very good. Disappointed that they still do not offer Lobster in any of the restaurants.
They have made 2 significant changes which are for the worse. They force you to book all the ala carte restaurants thru their app on your cell phone. First of all, the app was not working properly.
Secondly I came away to get away from work and computers and cell phones. We ended up going to the front and insisting that they make our dinner reservations and breakfast room service order for us. Luz at the front desk was very accommodating and made all of our reservations for us. Some of the other front desk staff would not co-operate-they would not do this for us. Luz is the best person working on the front reception,
They also have discontinued the complimentary shuttle service from the front lobby to the beach restaurants. It is a vey long way and impossible if you want to dress up and wear high heels at night. The clientele here is much older-it would be a very long walk in the dark for them. Please bring back the complimentary golf cart shuttle.
Seriously overpriced, 3star at best

Not a 5 star hotel !!!!, and I have travelled all over the Caribbean, a la carte food inedible, tough steaks, small portions, dryed up sauces, very limited choice on menu, s, light fixing in closet would not switch off, when I touched it I got a shock. Sunbeds with parasols on beach all taken by 7am, beach towels all taken, On plus side very friendly hard working staff, noted that Spanish speaking guests seemed to get better service, staff trying to upgrade you by selling an ' Excellence " package , my advice is upgrade the whole hotel to that level for no extra cost, just a way of ripping you, definitely will not be returning , don't waste your hard earned money on this hotel

The staff in the resort are extremely thoughtful. The accomodations are comfortable and convenient. The beach is perfect, you can literally spend hours in the sea without any effort.
There are several restaurants that serve good meals. My suggestion to the hotel would be to vary the menus because if you choose to spend more than one week which is my case it can become boring to repeat the same choices.
The beach bar is very well attended to. They roam around the becah to offer drinks during the day so you can actually just lay back and enjoy the experience. Even for non alcohol consumers like me, they prepare the most wonderful "virgen" coctails.
The background music creates the most relaxing ambience and gets you into relax mode 100%.
We have been there 3 times already and are already booked for our fourth visit this sspring.
