Horrible Experience

Jennial88 on Jul 27, 2021

I recently stayed at the Grand Riviera Princess in mid July 2021 and the experience was extremely horrible. To start: Service - The resort itself was at 50% capacity and was understaffed due to COVID. We stayed at the Platinum section which is basically a VIP on their amenities within the resort (not the rooms). However based on our experience that upgraded service was pretty useless. When you call the concierge there was never anyone to pick up the phone no matter what time of day it was and the trolley to take us to the lobby was about a 15-25 minute wait time. During our stay we practically walked to/from the lobby majority of the time since it took us faster to get back to our room than waiting around for the trolley to come. The walk took about 10 minutes or less if you speed walk. Additionally in order to eat at one of the restaurants that were part of the all inclusive resort you had to book a reservation through their website. The restaurant reservation booking was a bit challenging because they barely had any openings left. We were told by the concierge that they release opening times around 12 midnight but who really has the time to wait around at that time. I ended up booking our restaurant when I got up in the morning. We were only able to book (2) restaurants at the resort - 1st La Vaquiera and 2nd was Miso which were both okay. Also an FYI for the Miso restaurant, if you book your reservation after 9pm you will automatically be put in for the hibachi style. So if you would like to get the full on experience on their menu make sure to book your dinner reservations BEFORE 9pm. We also ate dinner and breakfast at the buffest which were not very good as well. The only food I liked was the taco stand they had near the pool area. On the last night of our stay as we were packing our room ceiling also had a leak which occurred around 11:30ish. It took a while to get a hold of someone from maintenance to assist with the issue but they came eventually. They offered to move us to a different room which was a bit of a hassle because that would mean we had to rush repacking all our things and wait for a bellboy to come (which god knows when that would be). We ended up staying in the room after the maintenance man told us it should be safe to stay at our room for the night since we told him we were checking out already the next day. On the day of our check out we planned to be at the lobby around 6:45am since we had a airport car pickup at 7am. I contacted the bellboy at 6:15am to get a head start but no one picked up the phone at concierge, bell service, front desk and the resort service. As a result we ended up walking with our luggage to the lobby in the humidity. Resort: The resort itself such as the plants and the walkway areas were well maintained. However a lot of people who ordered room service and left their food outside attracted coatis (similar to raccoons just less aggressive towards humans) to dig into the leftovers. Be prepared to see a lot of them all over the resort but again they really keep to themselves and they easily get scares if you yell at them to go away. The beach was near the Platinum section so we were able to easily walk there. However the beach is sectioned off by flags from no swimming to swimming areas. The beach was filled with lots of seaweed which is where the red flag section is at (no swimming). I recommend to always have your mask on when you are planning to order food at some locations on the resort otherwise you will be refused service. Room: We stayed at a Platinum double bedroom which had a jacuzzi inside the bathroom and on the balcony. Our room had somewhat of an ocean view but since we were always out we didn't really take the chance to enjoy the scene. Since we stayed at the Platinum section we had access to the private pool. The private pool is quite small so it's a hit or miss to reserve beds. People usually get up early and throw their towels to reserve spots. Testing for COVID: If you are from the U.S the current regulation is you must get tested 3 days prior to your flight. Before I went on my trip I read reviews on which hotels offered on-site testing which is what led me to book at Grand Riviera Princess. However as my travel came closer I started reading more and more updated negative reviews about their testing procedures. Therefore it resulted me in looking for a Plan B. Keep in mind that their on site testing is offered from an outside source that is not affiliated with the resort. Since the reviews I read were negative I opted out from doing it at the resort and decided taking it at a more affordable and convenient location. I believe the resort offered $60-$70 for Antigen (Rapid) and over $120 for PCR. The location I went to was called Mavelsa which was about 12-15 minutes away. I opted in for the Antigen test which only cost $22 (400 pesos I believe). The testing site was located at a shopping center which also turns into a nightlife scenery. I would however advise if you are paying in U.S dollars be sure to have exact change as they do not provide change back (do not give U.S. coins). The cab to/from our hotel only cost $20 to the 5ta Avenida which was reasonable (this is where the testing site was located). Summary: I would not come back to this location even if they offered me any promotions. I also wouldn't recommend this location to anyone due to it's lack of client services and response to issues. You would think that since they are understaffed they would continue to be on their A game and uphold their positive reviews in the past. However I guess the pandemic took a toll on their service as well.

Escape to Paradise

Stan L on Jul 26, 2021

We stayed at this hotel several years ago. The rooms are well maintained and very clean, the food was excellent and very varied. The physical maintenance seems to have slipped a little, the statuary need repair, some of the walking areas need repair, the woodwork on the bridges is not as pristine as it was a few years ago. Perhaps the covid has taken its toll, but overall a very good experience. It is a very large Hotel and they could use more bars and very often there was only one bartender serving a long line of patrons. Nice Beach with many palms and lots of shade, comfortable temperatures and a wonderful breeze. We were very lucky 7 days no rain until we were in our transportation to the airport. Vacation Express gave us a good deal and we filled that we got good value for money. We had to pay $35 each for the covid test, which was free when we stayed in the Dominican Republic. I did want to mention that the shows at night or some of the best that we've ever seen. We took the tour to Chicken Itza, 12 hours of fun and education. The cenote was beautiful and jumping in made me feel like a virgin again. That's all folks!!
