I visited with my family over the BC Day long weekend (first Monday of August) for 7 nights. The location of the hotel is excellent but the service was poor. The service was well below any other Westin or 4 star hotel I've ever visited. In short, service requests were either ignored or took multiple requests before they were fulfilled. I've included a very lengthy review below of both the good and bad of our visit.
1) Request for crib took multiple requests and follow up in person
It took over 5 requests (depending when you start counting) to obtain a crib. I requested a crib for the room weeks before my arrival through the website. When I "checked-in" online the night before I saw the request was no longer there so I called the hotel and confirmed that a request for a crib was on file.
When I arrived at the hotel around noon I was told the room wouldn't be ready until the normal 4pm check-in time (which was fine) and I again confirmed that a crib would be in my room. The room wasn't ready until 4:20pm and no crib was there. I called down to request a crib and was told one would be sent up. I waited 45 minutes and called again to follow up on the status. Based on the way the person answered my query it was clear the request was never processed but they said they would call me right back with the status. I waited another 15 minutes without receiving a call back and then ended up going down to the front desk. I explained the above and that my baby needed to sleep by 6pm and we now needed the crib urgently. The gentleman at the front desk apologized and said they would personally ensure a crib arrived in the next 20 minutes. He was a man of his word and the crib arrives 15 minutes later.
This was a very bad start to our visit and I've never received such poor service at any hotel before. It may seem like a minor request but to someone travelling with a baby it's critically important.
2) Requests ignored
We called down to request champagne glasses and a wine opener one night. We were told they would be sent up. We were in our room the remainder of the night and nothing ever arrived.
3) Things that didn't work and/or were dirty
We discovered the AC in the living room of our suite didn't work, the batteries were dead in the remotes so we couldn't turn on the TVs, and the balcony floor was sticky and dirty.
We requested these items be addressed the morning after our arrival by handing a written listen to the front desk as we didn't trust that any requests by phone would be addressed. The AC and batteries were addressed while we were out. The balcony was never cleaned the entire time we were there.
4) In room dining
We called for in-room dining and nobody would pick up nor did anyone call us back. In retrospect, maybe this was for the best as I'm not sure if the food would have ever been delivered.
5) Poor lighting in bathroom
The lighting in the bathroom was horrible. It was as if it was missing a light but it seems this is just the way it was designed.
The hotel is a short walk to Stanley Park, the seawall, and Canada Place.
2) Friendly staff
The staff we encountered were very friendly. While I have a lot of complaints about service requests not being met, everyone was friendly.
3) H Tasting Lounge
This ended up being the best feature of the hotel to us. Initially I thought this would primarily be a bar with small snacks but the food here was excellent. I would recommend the tasting lounge for both food and drinks.
I wish the service had been better as the location was great. Unfortunately I can't recommend this hotel.
