Great Vacation Spot

danieladE188JC (Maple, Canada) on Dec 05, 2022

We went for 4 days Nov 3 to Dec 3 and booked the RESERVE Suite. We arrived early (approx noon) our room was ready by 1:30 and we were also given a late check out. The Reserve lobby is vey nice but it is all indoors and does not have the same feel as the main lobby, it is very quiet. There is a great Bar and a smaller buffet for breakfast and lunch, however it is much smaller then the main buffet and a lot quieter. The hotel itself was not busy at all. Maybe 30% capacity. There is no beach at the Reserve section, we walked to the beach daily(only 5 minutes). You are given a Towel Card for 2 towels at check in and you need to get the card back for check out. Room: was spacious and clean. The balcony is massive. The AC was a little wonky sometimes but my hubby figured it out and it was fine. One day we did not have hot water. The housecleaning staff were great and always brought us extra towels. They only have bath size towels, no face towels or hand towels. The room has a coffee maker, iron and hairdryer. Beach: no issues at anytime getting a chair. There are 3 sections at the beach, The Royal Service, The Reserve and the regular section. I don't know what the difference is. One day we were the only ones in our section. There is a great 24/7 snack bar at the beach that serves sliders, hotdogs, tuna sandwiches and banana chips(Amazing) While we were there the beach was always cleaned of seaweed. It was quite windy and there was a lot of seaweed in the mornings. My husband and I both got a lot of sea flea bites at the beach. No mosquitos though at night. The water is so clear and you can walk along the beach to the Iberostar Varadero and all the way to the Royalton. Pools: never stayed at the pools but they are huge and always was a lot of chairs. There is also a kids pool area and waterpark. Lots of showers to clean off the sand by the pools. Restaurants: Because the resort was at low capacity there were only 2 a la carte restaurants available: Fuego and Italian. We did both, Fuego was great, Italian was ok. The main buffet was huge. Great for breakfast, egg station, donut station and all the food you could want: Bacon, salt fish, breads, pancakes, French toast, cold cuts, cheeses, fresh juices. The Papaya was always available and sooo good! Not much selection for fruit though. Only papaya and pineapple., sometimes Guava. For lunch the buffet had all the basics. Pizza, pasta, breads, chicken , pork, rice and lots of fish. Wine was always available as well. For dinner almost the same as lunch. It does get repetitive but there is always something to eat! Entertainment/Bars: Main Lobby bar was always busy. We were there during the World cup and they had an area playing all the games. The night entertainment was ok, they had a kids show, followed by an adults show. The drinks at the main bar are awesome! The coffee is also great! The resort is big and its sad to see how slow and quiet it was. The staff work very hard and for the most part are very very friendly and kind. They are missing all the tourists, I truly hope things change and tourism goes up. A beautiful resort in a beautiful country.

A solid family getaway

Quest52265645805 (Port Hope, Canada) on Nov 30, 2022

Just got back from here a few days ago. 2 adults and 2 kids under 5 visiting from Canada. The staff was wonderful. Everyone we came across was very friendly and accommodating. We stayed in the standard room (junior suite I believe) rather than royal or reserve. The room was in need of some basic cosmetic repairs but was otherwise very clean and comfortable. The 2 beers left in the mini fridge by the cleaning staff every day was a nice touch. The resort was at about 1/4 of full capacity with large portions of the buildings either out of commission for repairs or empty for other reasons (I assume lack of travellers due to covid fears or Russian ruble value). The result was that there was no shortage of personal space, deck lounge chairs or tables for dinner. The food was very tasty. The selection didn't change much from day to day but there was definitely no shortage of options or quantity. The A la carte restaurants were a nice change from the buffet. My favorite was the Hibachi restaurant. The main pools were clean and well kept. One got a bit green one morning and they shut it down for a deep clean. It reopened around noon that day. The kids pool on the reserve side of the resort is in serious need of some love. No water was pumping to the slide or other splash pad style things and paint chips from those things were all over the bottom of the pool. The kids staying at the the reserve side swam in the main pools. The beaches were well maintained and groomed. My 2 small children had a wonderful time here. The nightly children's entertainment was great and they really enjoyed the kids club for a few hours during the days. Shoutout to Anna. She was great with the kids. They couldn't wait to go back and hang out with her. I would come back here again without hesitation. It's the staff that made the difference. They worked really hard to make sure that my family and I had a great experience.

18+ Royal service worth it

valsim (Quebec, Canada) on Nov 27, 2022

We were at the 18+ Royal Service. Incredible resort, worth every penny. make sure to bring bug spray Make sure to bring undamaged bills as they cannot deposit if bills are damaged Do not tip in cuban pesos as everything they need needs to be paid in foreign currency (US, CAD, EUR) Merlin at he 18+ resort is the greatest. Thank you for a great vacation

Great family vacation

Joanne B on Nov 27, 2022

Stayed here November 14-21st with my husband, 12 year old daughter and my mother, 63 This was my husband and I sixth trip to Cuba we're huge fans of the people and the country. We paid a bit more for this resort for the location and the small buildings as my Mom has mobility issues and I wanted her to have a ground floor room. The beach was beautiful but a bit rocky near the cove with coral. Could have been from the hurricane or maybe it's always been like that but if you walk to the left about 100 feet it's nice and soft sand. The rooms were clean, cool and well appointed, bed was comfortable,no issues and we were put in building 36 which was close to everything. This resort is gigantic. If you stay on the royal or reserve side you're far from the beach and main pool but there is a separate pool on that side. There's also trolleys driving around all the time and they'll gladly drive you where you want to go. The food in the buffet is exactly what you would expect. If they took a bit from the preparation in the a la cartes and put it into the buffet it would have been the best buffet I've seen. As people have said they are having supply issues but they make the best of what they have. The a la cartes were all amazing. Especially the Japanese hibachi one which you can add lobster to but they don't ask you when you book we happened to see it on one of the TV's and added it. Highly recommend. As always, the staff are what makes this place, that's the truth of Cuba it's why we continue to return to Cuba time and time again. Cubans are as close to Canadians as you can get. It's a safe and happy place and considering all the hardships they have it's truly amazing to see the resilience of the people. We never return to the same resort twice but my daughter loved this place and the people so we may at some point when we choose to take her away again. If you've been to Cuba and know what to expect you'll find this resort to be on par or slightly better than you're used to. If you haven't been to Cuba please do some research before going as it's not Americanized like Mexico or Jamaica and you will more than likely be disappointed no matter where you stay.

The worst hotel I stayed in my life, food was horrible They don’t have even the basic I was sick all the stay stomachache and diarrhea, the room super dirty with bed bugs, I had to go to the doctor when come backed button every were in my body The towels smell food they give you 2 towels only, when we asked the housekeeper for more towels and body lotion she said it’s complicate, I had to give her 10$ and then she brought them and hiding them like an illegal item, they give you 2 beers daily and bottle of water and you can’t have more. (All in lol) The shows at night was mediocre ??????? For the price we paid we do prefer to go Mexico or Dominican Republic, you guys need to really learn for them. The only think positive is the beautiful beach (nature beauty) even it wasn’t well maintained We will NEVER come back
