I'm conflicted about writing this review as I do love the beaches and people of Varadero. I've never understood how a company such as Melia allow their hotels to get run down. This is a beautiful sprawling property that would need a minimal amount of upkeep to keep it in its glory. The hotel is filled with water features that are not being maintained and probably contribute to a big mosquito problem ( Bring bug spray for yourself and the room ). The hotel should just fill them in. The pools are extensive, however, again devoid of any loungers, so many people did not use the pools. Personally, I like the beach. However, I do like to hang at the pool afterward. Loungers are still a challenge with people putting their towels out and leaving them vacant for most of the day. I'm not sure what the solution to this is. Rooms were spacious and updated. However, lack of climate controls, no towel holders, no hot water, and the shower head did not work. The bathroom shower window had no privacy and was visible to the outside. Someone could look in and see you while showering. The food was adequate, however, a constant lineup to get eggs, which could be alleviated if they simply scrambled and left some eggs available. The birds are a serious problem and are openly on the buffet tables... not appetizing or hygienic, I'm sure. The people are challenged, to say the least, and I do sympathize with them and lead me to question if going to Cuba is helping them or not. The last few times I've gone, I find the people indifferent and customer service lacking. Tipping has lost its motivation to do more. Again, I love Cuba and its people, I can only hope its political agenda changes. Melia, you can make this a true 5-star hotel with a little bit of effort. It's perplexing why you wouldn't have a staff of people from Spain managing it. Also, I do want to thank Liani for her excellent support when I did raise things to management.

According to what standard is it a 5* hotel? A similar hotel in Europe would be a 3*… Room: Expect room will be provided late after check-in Expect shortage of hot water (3 days in a row) Expect lack of engagement from staff unless you give them money Expect mold in your room (the smell is terrible) Expect the phone in the room wont work Expect the shower head in your room may break Buffet: Expect birds constantly picking at food in the buffet (poor hygiene) Expect bird shiit everywhere Expect the cook to personally serve you raw chicken (public health issues hello) Expect you will lose weight from the food Other: Expect bad weather round this time of year Expect birds and dogs swimming with you in the swimming pool Expect all sun beds being already reserved by 9am
