    A Universal Disappointment

The hotel (run by Loews) and the park (run by Universal Studios) are separate entities, and communication between them is minimal at best. We were (politely) informed at check-in that hotel issues went to the front desk and park problems went to a separate desk. This does not make for a seamless operation. We were not informed on check-in that our meal plan was not honoured at the hotel cafeteria, so if we wanted to use it for supper we had to eat at the park before leaving. If we wanted a pre-paid snack, again, eat it at the park. Any food or snacks obtained at the hotel were out-of-pocket. The food and snack package did not cover all venues inside the park, only special ones; and were not available for all items at the designated stores, only a very select few. When we arrived at the park we were issued our room keys and park passes. The room keys were cool (plastic with theme characters); but the park pass was paper, which was a bit of a drag at the water park. They did however, sell clear plastic pouches for only $14.00 at the park desk. They could have charged us an extra $14.00 on their package price, given us the same plastic holder on check-in and we would have thought they were heroes. Instead, it was a nickel-and-dime operation. There was pretty well zero communication between the park and the hotel. We were not informed that the park was closing early for a "special function" so when we left early enough from the water park to go and have a meal-plan supper we were informed that we could not enter. A sign in the lobby and at the bus stop would have saved us a lot (a big lot) of frustration. Oh, and by the way, we were also told not to walk on the red carpet they had laid out for their Special Function Special Guests. I have sent an e-mail to Microsoft telling them that I understand their dedication to appreciating their employees, but the people that they hired to execute that appreciation did less than zero for Microsoft's public image. Pretty well all of the individuals we interacted with from the hotel were good - Will at the front desk and our room maid especially - were pleasant and competent. The problem was organizational. I would call this a mickey-mouse operation, but that would be an insult to the Mouse that knows how to do things properly. I will not stay at your property again, and I will not recommend it to others.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but did have a few issues. The biggest issue was on checkout day when at 8:55 a.m. housekeeping was knocking on our door. She indicated she wanted to make sure we didn’t need anything but it really felt more like the fact that she wanted us up and out of the room so she can prepare it for the next guest. Please understand that not all guests need/want to get up earlier than most guests. Considering that the official checkin time is not until 4:00 pm and checkout is 11:00 a.m., guests are not even in the room for 24 hours, so factoring the $128.25 charge for the room - the thought that housekeeping wakes guests up simply so that they can get up and start getting ready to vacate the room is unfair and unbelievable. The next issue with the hotel is the food options and quality of same. We ate at Galaxy Bowl and Bayliner Diner and overpaid for what we received. Either our server at Galaxy Bowl was very shy or she really doesn’t like her job because when she spoke it was so low it was hard to hear what she was saying and we had to flag her down to get refills on our beverages (don’t get me wrong, she was very nice, just hard to find and hear). The food was tasty but very unimpressive (which considering it was a bowling alley maybe that’s what the restaurant manger is going for). We had breakfast at the Bayliner Diner, which I will say the biscuit and gravy was very good, but the scrambled egg platter with home fries was terrible - the bacon had a strange taste and the home fries were hard and overcooked. I was amazed people where buying the croissants because they were so brown and overcooked that I thought that maybe they were chocolate croissants. Just because the onsite property restaurants are convenient, should not be an excuse to give bad service, bad food and overprice everything (a small Greek yogurt was $3.50 - really???). The hotel itself was in need of some serious updating. It’s hard to believe that the resort is only five years old as the wear and tear makes it feel much older. One of the elevators we were in had a good portion of the wood veneer missing, in our bathroom there was a section by the tub/shower that looked like it was mold, and the furniture in the room needed deep cleaning. The beds were very comfortable, the pool area looked amazing and having a fire pit was great (unfortunately it started raining around 4:00 pm so we were unable to do s’mores as we had planned).

TOO MUCH SMOKING IN NON-SMOKING AREAS

Everywhere we went there were people smoking in the non-smoking areas. The hotel had huge ashtrays all over the non-smoking areas and smokers just kept smoking there. Never could get to the pool or see any outside areas. Sometimes hard to get in line for the bus with people smoking.

The worst start to a Vacation in my life!

My family and I arrived at 5PM 11/9. We waited 2 and a half hours to check in. The system was down so it’s understandable. When we finally got our room keys and go to the assigned room we find that there is already a family in the room. We walk in on a couple laying in there bed and scare them to death. After an extremely embarrassing time explaining these were the room keys we were given. My family and I finally go to the lobby and tell them that there is someone already in the room. They give us room keys to a vacant room. So that was our first day. Our second day we come back to our room to a leak in the sink. This is literally the worst start to an expensive vacation we have ever had. If the management actually reads these reviews please know that we will be staying on property til the 17th. Please make this right. We are annual pass holders and this is the worst experience we have ever had one universal property.
