Hot Halifax Hollis!

Carolyn T (Fayetteville, Georgia) on Jun 22, 2022

This hotel is in a great location as it is close to the waterfront, nice local restaurants and other attractions. The room was designed well and we were generally pleased. That is where the compliments end. A couple of small observations: one of the people in my travelling group did not have an ironing board in their room; the bed was slightly sunken in, in the middle; the hook was missing from the back of the bathroom door so I no where to hang my toiletry bag or anything else. And believe it or not, it is important to have a luggage rack available. The big issue, as the previous reviews stated, was the broken air conditioning and that made for a very uncomfortable and stuffy room. The tiny fan provided by the hotel was not very helpful either. The sign on the door stating "they were working on the air conditioner," however, we were told that it had been broken for months! Now, I understand that the temperature is cooler in Canada, but that does not make up for a stuffy room. Also, what is taking the hotel so long to fix the problem? Money? That is probably the case, but I wonder if it's because they are too cheap to spend the amount necessary to complete the repairs. This is June and it's only going to get warmer. It is unfortunate that I am unable to recommend the Hollis to anyone until they fix this issue.

Family trip with poor accommodations

danielgM2733SQ (Allentown, Pennsylvania) on Jun 19, 2022

We checked in and noticed a sign that said air conditioning malfunctioning will be fixed soon. No discussion from staff. Parking offsite in small gravel lot. First come first park. Room was very hot with small fan blowing warm air around. Had to keep door open as hallway was air conditioned. Called desk near bedtime to inquire about A/C and were told that would be out all weekend. Also second night, very loud party next door. Called front desk at 11pm, asked to quiet the party as family was trying to sleep. Party continued through midnight. Obviously the hotel does not care about customer service. Will never stay again.

Stifling rooms and disorganized hotel

TorontoBean (Toronto) on Jun 15, 2022

This hotel does not have AC. It’s not “broken”as the signs claim the whole unit has been removed and they are waiting for another one. This is a long term problem. You may think that’s not a big deal, but trust me, even in the cool days of early June it gets very hot in the rooms…with the shade drawn shut. On top of the unpleasant heat, they are under staffed and disorganized. Many little annoyances (being given the wrong type of room, keys that repeatedly didn’t work, requested items not delivered, no housekeeping after requesting) could have been forgiven if it wasn’t so so hot. Do not stay here unless they confirm they have AC. If you can’t change your booking and your stuck staying here…complain to the front desk. You will get free breakfast and parking and if you keep complaining you will get 25% off you total bill. But really, just stay somewhere else.

Location is great - amenities are lacking

Jessgb20 on Jun 08, 2022

Overall, the hotel has a great location right near museums and restaurants. If you get a room overlooking the water, it will be a great view. Unfortunately, this is where the positives end. The a/c is broken and has been for awhile now. The room is stifling hot with no fan or ability to open windows. There was no mention of this when booking the hotel room. The staff do not want to help you with anything and act as if a simple question is an inconvenience. The waitstaff are even worse choosing to ignore you forcing you to be unable to take advantage of the restaurant. I understand we are in a staffing shortage right now, but this was unacceptable. I would be ok with this subpar experience for a reasonable price, but the rates still are reflecting a 4 star experience. This property should not be a Hilton property as it does not live up to those standards.

Incredibly disappointed

JSplain (Chicago, Illinois) on Jun 06, 2022

We arrived on a Monday around 8pm to find that the air conditioning was broken throughout the building. I asked when it would be resolved and was told "maybe by the weekend". This was totally unacceptable--especially considering how hot in was in Halifax at the time, and that the windows don't open in the rooms. I was extremely disappointed that we were not notified in advance so that we could make alternate arrangements. When I asked about getting moved to a sister property in the city, I was told that one was sold out and the other "wasn't answering the phone". So basically, we were on our own. We canceled the reservation and had to find another accommodation--at a much higher rate--for our stay in Halifax. I am shocked that Hilton is still attaching its name to this property. Based on other reviews I'm reading, this air conditioning issue has been ongoing, and although management has replied to these saying it has been fixed, some of those replies are from the date we were there--so don't believe that.
