I would recommend this resort. The beach was spectacular the place is very well maintained. For the most part the food and drinks were good. The excursions were what we expected. I would go back!
A Place to Relax and Rest
Feb 16, 2024
Tired from work and family responsibilities, we were looking for a relaxing place to spend a week. We found it at Occidental Papagayo. It is a beautiful resort with two very clean pools. We spent most of our time at the main pool. The swim-up bar is great for easy access to drinks, but it is a bit small and is somewhat more crowded. It also has limited sun areas. The beach was not usable nor inviting. There were some lounge chairs available, but we chose to remain at the pool each day.
We stayed in building 1 overlooking the pool. Our room appeared to have the best view in the resort and was very close to everything. The rooms were surprisingly big. They were very clean and every detail was attended to each day without even having to ask (as is not the case in post-Covid US hotels). The mini bar was restocked each day. It is important to note ,though, that speciality drinks such as Diet Coke must be requested at the front desk. Once we made the request, we had plenty of what we wanted in the mini bar each day.
Since we were mainly looking for a relaxing vacation, we spent most of our time at the resort. We did venture out to the nearby town of Playa Del Coco. We were not interested in spending a full day on a tour so JJ at the tour desk in the lobby helped with transportation. We took a taxi back on our own that saved us more than 1/2 of what it cost to get to town. JJ had given us instructions to ask someone in one of the town bars to call us a cab that was air conditioned and safe. It cost only $20 for our group of four to get back to the resort. We also visited the Congo Trail. Some in our group went zip lining. I was not interested in zip lining but was able to wait in comfort on the grounds while they were gone. I watched as white-faced monkeys entertained me in their natural habitat.
The dining is what one would expect at an all-inclusive resort. It varies only slightly from night-to-night but is good and enjoyable. They have only two dining options not including the two speciality restaurants. We ate at the Oriental and the Italian speciality restaurants. Both were good, but it was the experience more than the food that make them stand out. The service was impeccable throughout the resort. The staff members were always smiling and eager to help. There were girls named Kimberly and Maria in the buffet dining room that kept my drinks replenished in a timely fashion.
The tourists at the hotel are mainly older adults. Younger people may prefer a different resort. This one is void of high energy dance clubs and the loud party crowds that most younger people seek. That made it a resort that we would definitely visit again.
Vacation with close friends

We had a great week at this beautiful resort! Everything was wonderful. Before our trip with friends I called both the reception and tour desks. All my questions were answered and they provided useful information. As promised the day before we left I received an email verifying our arrival and departure. I was promptly emailed back with what to expect at the airport and time and place for return to airport. Grounds were lush and well maintained. The rooms were large and comfortable plus we had a great pool view in bldg 1. The food was good and we especially enjoyed the two a la carte restaurants. No shortage of adult beverages! We enjoyed both the large pool and swimup bar pool. A special thanks to JJ at the tour desk who took his time and fully explained options for transportation to Playa del Coco and zip lining. All the staff were pleasant. We were extremely happy with our stay and will definitely consider this property for future trips.
We can see why TUI pulled out

While we have had a lovely holiday in Costa Rica the hotel was a joke. It has the potential to be spectacular. The location is fantastic, the pools and bars are lovely. The beach and coast views are stunning.
There are many rules; mainly to benefit the hotel and inconvenience the guests.
The a la carte restaurants were awful. Cold food, lack of cutlery, main course plates put down on top of our dirty starter plates (never seen that before). Visited each one once and didn’t bother after that.
The bar staff were great, and generally the other departments’ staff too, yet they lack training.
The reception staff were extremely unhelpful. I celebrated my 50th birthday during our stay and my husband was trying to organise to have some flowers delivered. You would imagine this would be simple. Reception calls florist, husband pays with credit card, hotel makes commission (crowd goes wild). Nope. They did not want to help. He had to get an Uber to the nearest town to buy flowers. They also would not let him pre-book room service breakfast for my birthday.
We are flying home tomorrow and are not allowed to pay for a late
checkout, nor is there a courtesy room for us to use so we either go to the airport 5 hours before our flight or we just sit in the reception for hours until it’s time to go. I even called hoteles barceló customer services and they were no use either. All we need is a couple of extra hours. We didn’t arrive until the evening on our first day!!
Very annoying end to what has been for the most part a great holiday.
