Noisest Hotel We Have Ever Stayed In
juliev55 (London) on Mar 28, 2026
My husband and I have just returned from a 10 night stay at this hotel and whilst there are some positives, this really is the noisest hotel we have ever stayed in and not relaxing at all. There are other negatives too which ultimately mean this hotel is a 3* star rather than 4* and for these reasons along with the noise, it is not a hotel we would return to or recommend. Let's start with the positives though, the hotel's cleanliness is second to none, everywhere is spotless, all of the staff are friendly and there is a great choice of food and drink, we enjoyed all of the dining establishments and never went hungry. Now the negatives and let's address the noise issue first. We had originally booked a standard room but was upgraded on arrival to a junior suite with a balcony, room 122 which we was excited about but how wrong we were. Room 122 is situated on the ground floor facing out to to the street, next door to a hotel storage room and a short distance from the main reception and lobby/bar and the noise just never stopped. Noise from the street at all hours of the day/night , noise from loud guests screaming and shouting in the hallway as they passed our room, normally in the early hours of the morning, noise from staff using the storage room and noise from the bar! There is no double/triple glazing on the patio doors and no doors between the bar/lobby areas and the corridor to the rooms, infact the acoustics of the whole hotel are insufficient, at times you endure having to listen to 2 different types of music coming from 2 different areas, the buffet restaurant is loud and around the pool is noisy with the entertainment team screaming and shouting and generally encouraging already loud guests to be even louder which is not relaxing for those guests who are simply looking to relax by the pool. Even the quiet pool on the roof is not quiet due to the noise from the street. We could have asked to change rooms but having already been upgraded and unpacked and experienced the noise levels throughout the rest of the hotel we really didn't think it would have made much difference. Another big negative is the amount of cabanas around the pool which because are at extra cost sit empty, I think during our 10 night stay we saw at most 3 being used. Meanwhile, sunloungers are crammed so close together with no room to move and you have to be up before 8 am if you want to guarantee front row and there quite simply are not enough loungers for people around by the pool. Add to that the lack of outside seating it's highly likely you will end up sitting inside. It would be much better if there were less cabanas and the space was used for additional tables & chairs and loungers. Other negatives include no robes in the room and 1 not being available when requested, the quality of the shampoo & body wash and not being provided with additionals like cotton buds, shower cap etc. Hot water takes forever to come through on the shower regardless of the time of day or night so be prepared to let it run for a while before you can use it. Curtains in the room are not fitted properly to the windows letting light in both at the bottom and at the end of each side. Air conditioning unit in room was noisy, on a positive this helped to block out some of the noise coming from elsewhere. There is no towel rail on the balcony to hang wet swimwear to dry. No plugs near mirrors for hairdryer etc and whilst the hairdryer provided was powerful the cable was too short. The plugs either side of the bed are not fit for purpose, as soon as you try to plug something in using a UK travel adapter, the weight means the plug comes away from the wall! And last but not least, the pillows are awful and need replacing unless you like sleeping on rocks, they are so hard and so high they are not comfortable in the slightest.

Amazing Resort

This was one of the most fun resorts I've stayed at. They played lots of music in the main pool and always had activities. The foam party was the BEST. This resort also had very good food compared to others. Their burgers and tacos at the buffet was great.
Incredible, would recommend!

Truly an awesome resort with incredible staff! Everyday we were so impressed by the entertainment team - especially David & Carlos. They made the days fun & funny! Jamie was the best poolside server. The food was pretty good & we were very impressed with the al la carte restaurants. Spa was awesome & everything was super clean. Proximity to downtown is incredible & felt super safe exploring! Can’t wait to come back!
Serious Safety Concern – Women Beware
Monica C on Mar 21, 2026
I stayed at Wyndham Altra – Playa del Carmen Hotel with a group of friends and had a very unsettling experience. Everything was going great until a man followed me into a restroom at night. I was only safe because I had already locked myself in a stall, and another person walked in shortly after, prompting him to leave. When I reported it, the front desk and hotel security dismissed it as “something drunk men do,” refused to show camera footage, and offered only to change my room, which made no sense, as the man had not followed me there and did not know where I was staying. I spent the rest of the night in my room because I felt unsafe, glad that I was leaving early the next morning. What’s most concerning is how the hotel handled it—no real investigation, no support, and no accountability. In a follow-up email, they stated that “a resolution was reached” in line with their privacy policies, “protecting both parties involved and avoiding confrontation between them”, effectively dismissing my safety concerns. Women should be aware: your safety may not be taken seriously here.
