Don’t let the peaceful appearance FOOL YOU!!

Hello, I am staying Mahekal. This is our 3rd night and tomorrow is our last. I have been in the travel business for over 40 years working for Virtuoso companies. The hotel is very nice, along with the staff and the food. I booked a garden palapa , 2nd floor. When we arrived we were told we are offering you a free upgrade the penthouse the front desk said. This is not an upgrade by any stretch of the imagination. We are at the edge of the property where apparently there was flooding. The air smells like rotten eggs from the stench of the sitting water. On our stoop we have bird poo all over it and pigeons nesting above us cooing all night. Right now there is a party at the hotel next door with BLARING music. The bass is vibrating in the room. This was NO upgrade. I am sure someone else complained and this room was open. Because a wedding was here all last week I’m sure they were out of rooms. I am extremely disappointed and am baffled at this has a 5 star rating. I will not recommend this property. At 1030pm music is STILL BLARING.

We booked the 4 night all inclusive special where you get the 4th night free. When we received the billing statement requiring 1/2 down as a deposit, it did not give credit for the free 4th night. Many attempts to contact billing went unanswered. Unfortunately we had to cancel our reservation , which we did in the allotted time for a full refund of our deposit. It has been 6 weeks and many calls and emails to billing but still no refund.

The location and houses look lovely from the outside. However the showers are low pressure, we heard noise from dogs barking and nearby hotels all night long. Never got a good nights sleep even with ear plugs. The food was horrible, no choice for kids. The day we arrived we were told our room type had been overbooked and instead of our son having his own bed (what we had paid for) … ‘could he just share our bed’. Appalling service from the minute we arrived. We were served raw chicken twice, the Starbucks on site was not upto standard either. So sadly the board choices are not worth it. No consistency with food in any restaurant at any time. Staff and hotel have not helped us in complaints- they have ignored all our requests. They were not helpful when we complained at the hotel in person or post stay. I wonder if I will get a response to this as I have not had a response to my emails or calls ever.

We are here right now at Mahekal. It truly is a magical place… The food and accommodations are top notch but what stands out are the employees here. Want to give a huge shout out to a couple of them. Gilberto the server at our pool was amazing and so nice to deal with. Valeria with the activity/entertainment crew was so excellent at all times as well and did a great job getting guests participating in the activities and games. Workers like this is what will bring us back to Mahekal again. Thank you so much to everyone that works there and see you again!!

We have been coming to mahekal since 2016 and are never disappointed. The low key vibe and lush landscaping are a wonderful contrast to bustling Playa del Carmen. The food is amazing and the people that work there go out of their way to make you feel welcome and cared for. But if you’re lucky to get Enrique, prepare to be spoiled. Manuel and Roberto also took amazing care of us. Can’t wait to go back.
